Although the Zhu Clan strongly opposed it, Chen Xiaode pressed them down with a divorce decree, leaving them powerless. No matter how strong she was, she was still a traditional woman, and being divorced was something she could not accept. She had to swallow her anger, especially since she had two daughters; if she were divorced, the lives of her two legitimate daughters would be ruined.
Qing Luan did not blame her; she only felt pity for her. Moreover, even if the Zhu Clan insisted, it would not change the reality. Therefore, she chose to be sent away—only with one request: after leaving the residence, Fourth Miss Chen would be considered dead.
The Zhu Clan opposed this, but she was resolute. Chen Xiaode was eager for her to leave as soon as possible, so he readily agreed to such terms.
Outside the city gate stood a simple carriage with a petite figure on it. She paid no mind to the desolation around her but coldly gazed in the direction of the city, vowing in her heart: in just a few years, she would stand before Chen Family members and Chen Xiaode with a brand new identity, making him realize how wrong his decision today was.
As for the Zhu Clan, she felt a sense of attachment. This attachment stemmed from the maternal love radiating from them; they loved their daughters but were powerless to help. Today, she should have come with her two sisters, but they were confined by Chen Xiaode. So now it was just a simple bundle (when leaving, Aunt Huang had searched it thoroughly under the pretense that nothing from Chen Residence could leak out), one girl, and a coachman. Her future had nothing to do with Chen Residence anymore.
But could it really be that simple?
Feeling the thick stack of banknotes in her arms, the image of Zhu Clan's painful expression flashed through her mind, causing her heart to tighten involuntarily. Those banknotes were secretly given to her by Zhu Clan when Aunt Huang's people searched her belongings before she left and when Zhu Clan held her while crying after her supposed death. As a woman, that was all she could do.
Thus, she did not harbor resentment towards Zhu Clan; instead, she felt a kind of attachment to them—a child's attachment to their mother.
"Miss?" The coachman left without a moment's pause. When Qin'er truly saw the scene before her, she was stunned.
Qin'er had insisted on following her mistress because she knew that if her mistress left, staying in the residence would guarantee a bad end for herself. It was better to follow her mistress out; if they were to die, at least it would be clean.
"Haha..." Looking at the desolate scene before them, Qing Luan laughed. "Aunt Huang really is ruthless!"
They said they were sending her to a village, but at least a village would have several houses and some people. Instead, what lay before them were dilapidated straw huts that looked ready to collapse; when the wind blew, one could even hear the mocking sounds of the straw... In Aunt Huang's plan, it seemed they intended to take all her money at the entrance and then let her self-destruct.
A young lady, delicate and unaccustomed to hardship, could she truly survive in such an environment? Thus, she found herself at a loss for what to do next.
"Miss," Qin'er said, her voice trembling with anxiety after hearing the young lady's laughter. As a girl herself, she struggled to cope with such circumstances, let alone someone who had lived a life of luxury. She feared that the young lady was overwhelmed by the situation before her and wanted to offer comfort, but the words eluded her.
The deep concern in Qin'er's tone brought Qing Luan back to reality. She looked at her worried expression and calmly reassured her, "Don't worry, no one is going to die!"
"Uh!" The comforting expression on Qin'er's face shifted to one of shock, disbelief flickering in her eyes—her miss was so composed.
Qing Luan offered no further explanation; instead, she took the bundle from Qin'er's hands and walked directly toward the few rickety straw huts that stood before them.
A new chapter of life was about to begin. However, despite the encouraging words, upon witnessing the disarray within the hut, she was left utterly dumbfounded.
