Shiva stood by the temple, watching from a distance as Agastya conversed with the master, his mind filled with thoughts. He took out the map he had hidden on his person and carefully compared the location, confirming that this temple was indeed the one the mentor had mentioned. This temple, besides being the center of Brahminism faith, was also an important ally of the Assassin organization in Patalliro.
At night, when the temple was brilliantly lit and incredibly peaceful, he could return once more to have a detailed discussion with the master, to see if he could obtain more information about Agastya and any other useful intelligence.
Currently, the sun is still high in the sky, and the city's bustle is gradually reaching its peak. Shiva knows that he needs to take advantage of this time to delve into every corner of the city, observe and understand the daily operations of the city, the lives of the people, and Agastya's rule here. Only by truly understanding the context of a city can he find the most suitable way to carry out his mission.
Following the crowd, he ventured into the market. There, a variety of goods were on display, from abundant food ingredients and exquisite jewelry to various fabrics, each stall with its own story. He could see that most citizens were still living peaceful lives, but it was also not difficult to notice that due to Agastya's rule, the lives of some common people were becoming increasingly difficult. Many people wore worried expressions on their faces, afraid or disgusted by Agastya's rule.
Shiva strolled through the alleys of the city, his gaze drawn to an inn named "Moonlight Inn." The exterior of the inn was elegant and ancient, a two-story wooden structure with exquisitely carved windows, as if telling the ancient legends of the city. The roof tiles, weathered by time, had turned brown but exuded a sense of history. A bell hung at the entrance, and when visitors entered, a clear chime would ring, sounding particularly melodious.
As Shiva entered the inn, a middle-aged innkeeper immediately greeted him warmly. His face was full of wrinkles, but his eyes were kind and passionate, clearly a person who had weathered many storms. He smiled and said to Shiva, "Welcome to the Moonlight Inn, young man. How many nights would you like to stay?"
Shiva nodded to indicate how many nights he wanted to stay. The innkeeper, seeing his tall and slender figure, dressed in a black robe with some special symbols, curiously asked, "Young man, are you a monk from a distant place?"
Shiva smiled slightly and replied, "Yes, I am a monk, traveling around and passing through here, wanting to stay and rest for a few days."
The boss nodded, showing great respect for Shiva's identity, and then arranged a quiet room for him. When he paid for the room, the boss gave him a friendly smile, as if to tell him that this was a safe haven.
The boss then asked, "Young monk, do you need something to eat?"
Shiva nodded slightly, indicating the need for some food. He wasn't actually very hungry, but he always needed to replenish his energy during the journey. Besides, he liked the environment of this inn and the feeling the owner gave him, so he wanted to taste the specialties here.
Before long, the owner came over with plates of fragrant food. There were abundant green vegetables, steaming curry, and golden fried bread on the table, accompanied by a cup of fragrant tea. Shiva looked at the delicious food in front of him and couldn't help but exclaim, "These dishes look absolutely delicious."
Shiva was about to take out his wallet, but was stopped by the boss. The boss smiled slightly and said, "No need, young monk. These are all our treats, considered a small gesture of respect for the monk."
Shiva looked at the boss in surprise and said gratefully, "This is really too kind of you, thank you."
The boss sighed and said, "In this city, without a little faith and hope, we really can't continue. For me, the monk is a symbol of hope for us. So, this is what I should do."
After he finished speaking, a faint smile appeared on his face, but in that smile, there was a sense of helplessness and sadness. Shiva deeply felt the pain and struggle behind this city.
Shiva saw the situation and asked the boss about the city's condition. The boss's eyes seemed a bit misty, as if he had returned to a moment in the past. He sighed softly and began to speak slowly, " Patalliro, this city was once a gem on this land. I still remember five years ago, it was full of laughter and happiness, the shops were thriving, and children were running and playing in the streets, without oppression or fear."
He took a sip of tea and continued with a tone of sadness, "But everything changed on that day when Agastya and his army entered our city. He had extraordinary power and a large number of troops. The mayor and the guards were no match for him. The mayor tried to negotiate, hoping he would leave Patalliro, but Agastya publicly executed him, citing 'disrespect' as the only reason."
The boss's eyes were filled with anger and helplessness: "After the mayor was executed, fear shrouded the entire city. Agastya then held the so-called 'fair elections,' but in reality, all the candidates were his puppets. Soon, a local named Suvein was elected as the mayor. Outwardly, he is the leader, but everyone knows that the one truly in power is Agastya."
Shiva's eyes flashed with a cold light as he asked, "So what's the situation now?"
The boss shook his head, "Every day, people are executed for dissatisfaction, businesses are forced to pay high 'protection fees,' and citizens live in fear. Agastya lives at the highest point of the city like an emperor, carefree, enjoying a luxurious life."
