Funeral Home Workers 9: Repay Grievances with Kindness

Two cars sped away quickly. I turned back to the Funeral Home and saw my boss, Chen Ran, along with Uncle Ming, Sister Min, and Brother Biao, all standing at the door watching me. The boss's round face was nearly splitting with laughter. 0

I squeezed the envelope in my hand. "That old rascal is trying to get his hands on this money again, isn't he?" 0

Boss Chen merely glanced at the envelope without asking me to "hand it over" like last time. Instead, he grinned and asked, "Did Sister Liu and the others leave?" 0

I nodded. 0

Boss Chen sighed, "Ah, what a pity." He then nudged Uncle Ming, saying, "Next time they come, make sure to call me down. Maybe I can get her to sign something or take a picture together..." 0

Now I understood and felt relieved, securely tucking the envelope away. Everyone looked at me with envy. 0

But honestly, I didn't think much of it. I had only helped her once during a special moment. If she hadn't forgotten about it, we might still be considered acquaintances; if she didn't care about it, then we had no relationship at all. People often say "X is heartless, Y is ungrateful," so it was entirely possible that next time we met, she wouldn't recognize me. 0

As July rolled in, the weather heated up. Brother Biao and I asked Uncle Ming for a day off to accompany each other to the clothing market near the train station for summer outfits. 0

No matter which city you’re in, train station areas tend to have the worst security. Jiangcheng is a provincial capital city, yet its train station area was still a mix of people from all walks of life. 0

In that area, we witnessed a disabled person using an electric scooter trying to scam cars and an elderly person begging who wouldn’t let passersby go without giving money... 0

Jiangcheng's train station is an important railway hub in the Central Plains Region. It not only hosts the largest clothing wholesale market in the province but also features exclusive stores for major clothing brands along the pedestrian street in the central square. 0

Here, you can find affordable clothing as well as international brands that cost thousands. However, for Brother Biao and me, shopping for basic items in underground markets was our top choice. 0

Boys shopping for clothes definitely lack the spirit and stubbornness that girls have when they go out shopping. We quickly picked out a few T-shirts and lightweight pants before emerging from the bustling crowd. 0

We strolled back to catch our company bus and passed by a Roast Meat Sandwich shop. Brother Biao licked his lips and said, "I'm a bit hungry. My treat—let's get two meat-filled pancakes." 0

The shop was doing great business as we stood in line waiting. 0

When it was Brother Biao's turn, two girls suddenly pushed their way to the front. "These two are ours!" one of them said while handing over ten yuan. 0

The shop attendant looked a bit troubled as she glanced back at Brother Biao and me. 0

Among the two girls, one had her hair tied in a ponytail and wore a short-sleeved white T-shirt paired with sporty shorts. She had a tall figure and raised her elegant eyebrows as she said, "What are you looking at? Just give me my pancake; I'll pay you!" 0

The chubby girl beside her advised gently, "Qiuying, they’re in line..." 0

"What's the big deal about waiting in line? A big man like you won't starve from waiting a little longer!" Ponytail said disdainfully. 0

Brother Biao was speechless and gestured to the waiter, "Just serve them first." 0

Ponytail paid for her flatbreads and smugly huffed at Brother Biao and me. The girl was quite pretty, but she really needed to work on her manners. 0

We boarded the number 11 bus in front of the central square, and it was particularly crowded at this stop. People were packed tightly together, truly shoulder to shoulder. 0

When we reached Civic Center station, a woman's voice suddenly shouted, "I've lost my wallet!" I found that voice somewhat familiar. 0

Then I saw a tall girl in a white T-shirt and athletic shorts gripping a tattooed, bald man in his twenties with all her might! It was indeed Ponytail, the one who had cut in line at the Meat-Stuffed Flatbread Shop. 0

The Tattooed Man looked flustered as if caught red-handed, but he still glared at Ponytail menacingly, "Who saw your wallet? Keep shouting and I'll hit you!" 0

Ponytail refused to let go. "It's in the pocket of the jacket draped over your arm! My wallet is pink, and my ID is inside!" 0

With so many people on the bus, not a single person stood up to speak for Ponytail. A chubby girl with a round face stared wide-eyed at the scene before her, frozen in place and too scared to make a sound. 0

Who knew this guy had accomplices? At the bus door, two men with buzz cuts displayed shiny utility knives. "If you're smart, step aside and let us off!" 0

Seeing no one daring to intervene only emboldened these thugs further. The Tattooed Man, still held by Ponytail, forcefully shoved her away and yelled, "Get the hell out of my way or you'll get blood on you!" The passengers scrambled to avoid him. 0

The bus was about to reach the stop when the three pickpockets would vanish in an instant after getting off. I shouted to the driver, "Don't open the door!" 0

Clinging to the overhead rail, I squeezed my way to the door. The Tattooed Man brandished his knife at me, but I swiftly grabbed his wrist. With a firm grip, he yelped as he dropped his knife. I pushed him hard toward the door. 0

Buzz Cut and his companion were caught off guard; the knife in Buzz Cut's hand sliced a long gash across the Tattooed Man's backside. 0

Buzz Cut swung his knife at me, but I seized both his hand and knife handle. With a twist, I dislocated his right arm. 0

Finally, some male passengers sprang into action. They rushed forward, punching and kicking until they quickly subdued all three pickpockets on the floor. 0

Someone snatched away the Tattooed Man's shirt and pulled out a women's wallet from his pocket; inside was an ID card with Ponytail's photo on it. 0

The evidence was undeniable. 0

When we reached the station, the driver called the police. The three pickpockets didn't even need to be escorted; they lay on the ground unable to get up. 0

As we exited the police station, Ponytail no longer had that arrogant demeanor from the flatbread shop. A hint of embarrassment colored her fair face as she said, "Thank you!" 0

The round-faced chubby girl regained her composure from the shock, and her eyes sparkled with little stars as she looked into mine. 0
