Ye Xiaohan returned to her room with the letter, tearing it open and skimming through its contents.
There weren't many words, and nothing particularly interesting was expressed—just some ordinary greetings.
However, Ye Xiaohan seemed to envision Gu Bei, after a long day of toil, taking a moment during a brief respite in a humble room. He lit an oil lamp and pondered for a long time before finally finishing this thin sheet of paper.
He even wasted several other drafts just to convey this short message.
Those drafts he deemed unsatisfactory were crumpled up and tossed into the wastebasket beside the desk.
At that moment, as Ye Xiaohan read the awkwardly phrased letter, her heart softened.
She then collected her thoughts, neatly folded the letter again, and placed it into a box where several other thin envelopes lay.
These were letters he had sent back intermittently since being ordered south.
The busy preparations for the bandit suppression and the inconvenient transportation made these letters difficult to come by. Yet despite that, they never ceased.
I hope everything goes well for Gu Bei, Ye Xiaohan silently wished in her heart, then turned her focus back to her daily life.
Being lost in thought did little to help her progress in life. It would be better to work harder and do what she could do even better.
While Ye Xiaohan was putting in effort, Gu Bei was in a southern city.
It was rainy here, with a humid climate and the constant presence of miasma.
Gu Bei looked up at the relatively clear sky, but the air was thick with moisture, suggesting that rain could fall at any moment after the sun shone brightly.
"General, everything is ready!"
A person entered from outside and reported the progress to Gu Bei.
Gu Bei's gaze returned from the distance, his expression gradually becoming serious as he turned to face his subordinate. "Well done, proceed as planned!"
"Yes! I will follow orders!"
After the subordinate left to carry out the orders, another one came in to report the situation. The hours passed, and until late into the night, Gu Bei had his dinner while discussing matters and hurriedly resolving issues with his subordinates.
While the atmosphere in the southern town was tense and solemn, the capital remained prosperous and bustling.
Liu Yang's feelings toward Bai Rong'er were still complex. He had not stopped doubting her and had been testing her in their daily interactions.
However, as expected, Bai Rong'er consistently displayed a timid and fragile demeanor. Even when people from the Liu household got too close, she would panic.
Bai Rong'er's response to Liu Yang's occasional approaches was indifferent, just as she usually behaved.
Liu Yang felt somewhat helpless but stubbornly refused to give up.
Unknowingly, a month had passed.
During this month, life had been calm as if nothing had happened. Those involved, including Ye Xiaohan, were so busy that they had no time to pay attention to anything else.
Just dealing with business matters was enough to leave them exhausted.
Taking advantage of a moment before dinner time arrived, Ye Xiaohan pulled out various bills for raw materials from recent days, intending to verify them and settle the accounts.
As dinner time approached and continued into the late-night hours, the entire restaurant would be bustling with people, making it impossible to focus on any tasks at hand.
Just as Ye Xiaohan had only half of her stack of orders completed, a sudden commotion erupted in the establishment.
A shadow blocked Ye Xiaohan's line of sight, causing the already dim light to grow even darker.
Furrowing her brows, Ye Xiaohan looked up. Upon seeing who it was, her frown deepened.
It was Liu Susu, accompanied by a large group of attendants, standing right in front of the counter.
"Ye Xiaohan, long time no see!" Liu Susu wore a peculiar expression that seemed complex, leaving Ye Xiaohan momentarily unable to decipher it.
Even so, her intuition told her that this was quite irksome.
This woman had caused her trouble time and again, yet she still had the audacity to come before her. What a thick-skinned person!
"Ah, Madam Gu! It truly has been a while," Ye Xiaohan replied with a smile, her tone friendly. "I heard from Lady Liu that Madam Gu was confined in Liu Manor for reflection. I trust you have gained much from it!"
If Liu Susu thought she could continue to act as she did in the past and expect Ye Xiaohan to endure it all, she was sorely mistaken! Ye Xiaohan silently scoffed; she genuinely welcomed Liu Susu's arrival.
If this foolish woman hadn’t come out seeking trouble herself, how would Ye Xiaohan have managed to drag someone out from the depths of the Liu Family’s estate to 'repay' Liu Susu for her great kindness?
"You!" Liu Susu was immediately taken aback by the retort. Anger was clearly visible on her face, but soon after, as if recalling something, her expression relaxed and even bore a hint of satisfaction.
Liu Susu looked at Ye Xiaohan, and that subtly unpleasant expression reappeared on her face.
"Boss Ye," Liu Susu emphasized her words and repeated them, "I have something to discuss with you." She paused for effect before adding, "It's just you and me."
Liu Susu's fingers traced lightly over her own body before she playfully pointed towards Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan's expression hardened as she flatly rejected, "I don't think there's any need for me to have anything to do with Madam Gu. Please leave, Madam Gu; our establishment doesn't have dishes suitable for your refined palate!"
"Leave quickly, or don't blame us for kicking you out!" 6 Yang's face darkened as he glared fiercely at Liu Susu. "It would be quite a joke if the esteemed daughter of the Minister's Residence were to be thrown out. I believe Madam Gu wouldn't want such a story spreading throughout the capital!"
6 Yang's words seemed like a warning but were, in fact, a threat, even though they were laced with respect.
Liu Susu sized up 6 Yang, malice flickering in her eyes, and a hint of an inexplicable smile appeared at the corners of her mouth.
"I'd like to see which joke spreads further: me being thrown out or your establishment being harassed and closing down due to lack of customers!"
Her gaze shifted towards the back, where a large group of people stood, watching intently.
If these individuals caused a scene in the restaurant, or even just stood quietly beside the guests, it would be enough to ruin anyone's appetite.
Considering this, 6 Yang hesitated.
Ye Xiaohan looked at Liu Susu with disgust, not bothering to hide it at all.
However, Ye Xiaohan ultimately acquiesced to the request; under these circumstances, she had little choice but to comply.
When someone is shameless, they become invincible. Especially when that shameless person holds power and influence, it becomes even more frustrating.
"Madam Gu must be eager to taste our restaurant's culinary skills; we naturally welcome you," Ye Xiaohan said as she stepped out from behind the counter and led the way. "This way to the private rooms on the second floor!"
The second floor had several private rooms that Ye Xiaohan had specifically reserved. These rooms were usually not open to the public and were occasionally made available to regular customers; typically, they were used by Ye Xiaohan herself for inviting friends or business partners.
Liu Susu was led into one of the rooms, and Ye Xiaohan put aside all pleasantries, coldly stating, "Get to the point. I'm busy and don't have time for nonsense!"
Liu Susu glanced disdainfully at the furniture. Soon, a maid took out a silk handkerchief and wiped down the table and chairs, then placed a fresh handkerchief on top. Only then did Liu Susu reluctantly take a seat.
The private room was small, and Liu Susu had brought too many people with her, so they all squeezed together, standing against one wall.
Throughout Liu Susu's actions, Ye Xiaohan maintained an expressionless gaze.
It wasn't until Liu Susu sat down and provocatively raised her head to meet Ye Xiaohan's eyes that the atmosphere shifted dramatically.
In that instant, it felt as if two volcanoes had erupted simultaneously, lava flowing everywhere, leaving desolation and barrenness in its wake.
Ye Xiaohan mocked, "No matter how clean you wipe the furniture, the filth within cannot be erased. Madam Gu need not go through such trouble."
To someone like Liu Susu, human lives were merely toys for her amusement. In Ye Xiaohan's eyes, she had become so ugly that she could no longer be considered human.
Liu Susu detected the disdain and anger in Ye Xiaohan's tone, and her expression darkened instantly.
"Ye Xiaohan, I advise you to know your place and not provoke me. The price for that is something you cannot afford."
Amidst her fierce demeanor, there was an unsettling hint of a smile on Liu Susu's face, making it all the more sinister.
