“Hero, wait! At least have a glass of water before you go!” Ye Xiaohan shouted from behind, knowing full well that it was impossible. Someone who didn’t even want their voice to be heard wouldn’t stay for a drink.
The Mysterious Man in Black had his face completely wrapped up, looking as if he had never removed it in his life and would never do so in the future.
Li Yang impulsively stepped in front of the Mysterious Man in Black, filled with anger as he tried to stop him. “Why did you let them go just now? Those people came to kill! They might have set my house on fire! Shouldn’t people like that be captured and taken to the Yamen? What happens if they go free and someone else gets hurt?”
As a Hero, shouldn’t he stand on the side of justice, ridding the world of evil? Li Yang had always admired those who could save others with their own strength, believing they were all good people.
However, reality seemed different from what he imagined. For instance, this man before him had saved lives but didn’t seem to embody the ideals he held dear.
Forcing one’s own ideals onto others was truly childish behavior. Especially when anger was misdirected at someone who didn’t meet his expectations; that was simply too immature.
Ye Xiaohan quickly pulled Li Yang back and apologized to the Mysterious Man in Black. “I’m sorry, Hero! This child has been bullied and feels powerless to retaliate, so he’s angry with himself and ended up taking it out on you. Please don’t take it to heart! Considering his youth and ignorance, just forgive him this once. I’ll make sure to teach him a lesson later!”
It was still uncertain whether this person was friend or foe. If Li Yang accidentally angered him, he might just pick up the sword lying on the ground and hand one to each of them.
In truth, what Li Yang resented was his own powerlessness. When faced with a hero who acted in a way he couldn’t accept, he misdirected his frustration towards the very person who had saved them.
“I’m really sorry for shouting at you,” Li Yang said, quickly calming down. He felt a bit ashamed of his earlier behavior.
The offended man neither showed anger nor indicated any desire to forgive them; throughout the encounter, he hadn’t said a word.
Even before Li Yang finished apologizing, the man moved forward on his own, then suddenly leaped onto the roof of the adjacent building. After a few more jumps, he completely vanished into the night.
“Truly elusive! Is this how all masters are?” Ye Xiaohan remarked while looking into the darkness, shaking her head in awe. Then she turned back to see that everything flammable had been burned away, leaving only some flickering flames and hidden embers of the Fire. She sighed.
It seemed she would need to find a place to sleep tonight.
Pulling along the child at her feet, Ye Xiaohan asked, "Qii, can I sleep with you tonight?"
With so many events happening in this life, children are easily frightened. Sleeping together would also allow her to provide some psychological support for Qii.
"Sure! Sure!" Qii happily agreed. In the past, it was always her who insisted on sleeping together, and Ye Xiaohan would occasionally relent. Now that Ye Xiaohan had taken the initiative to suggest it, how could Qii possibly refuse?
It seemed that she wasn't frightened at all and remained as lively as ever. Ye Xiaohan assessed Qii's mental health and let out a sigh of relief.
At least they were fortunate; as long as everyone was safe, everything else could be dealt with.
To prevent the embers from spreading elsewhere and causing greater damage, Ye Xiaohan and Liu Yang fetched water to douse the charred remains of the house.
This simple task of carrying water took quite a bit of time and drained a lot of energy.
By the time they felt it was safe to stop, Ye Xiaohan was exhausted, nearly ready to collapse onto the ground and sleep.
Liu Yang didn't look much better; he appeared dazed, lacking his usual vitality.
After taking a few steps back while holding Qii's hand, Ye Xiaohan noticed Liu Yang had not followed. Turning around, she saw him still standing there, staring blankly as if lost in thought.
"Liu Yang, snap out of it," Ye Xiaohan called out, looking at him curiously. "What's wrong?"
She couldn't recall anything being particularly off that would cause Liu Yang to be so distracted.
Or perhaps everything in this life felt distinctly wrong; with the buildup of those events, she sensed that everything else seemed to follow a strict logical reasoning.
"Nothing, I'm here," Liu Yang replied to Ye Xiaohan, as if interrupted from his thoughts, while walking towards them to return to their room for some rest.
Before resting, Ye Xiaohan first went to Bai Rong'er's room to check on her condition. It seemed that the targets of those people were solely Ye Xiaohan; Liu Yang and Liu Qi were merely caught up in the situation because they were present at the time.
The Black-Clad Masked Figures did not search every corner of the house, so Bai Rong'er had been safe in her room without being disturbed.
When Ye Xiaohan entered, Bai Rong'er was still asleep, and it was only when she sensed someone else's presence in the room that she startled awake.
"Don't be afraid, it's me." Before Bai Rong'er could scream, Ye Xiaohan revealed his identity and reassured her of his harmlessness, allowing her to relax.
As if to confirm that the treatment she had received was indeed effective, Bai Rong'er appeared quite stable emotionally. Although fear still lingered in her eyes, her fingers unconsciously clutched the blanket tightly over her chest, trying to cover herself.
Fortunately, she did not let out a piercing scream. After Ye Xiaohan's gentle approach, her expression gradually calmed down.
After comforting Bai Rong'er for a few moments and watching her fall back asleep, Ye Xiaohan quietly exited the room with the oil lamp in hand and closed the door behind him.
Liu Yang and Liu Qi were waiting at the door. At night, Bai Rong'er's emotions tended to be more volatile than during the day, and she was extremely reluctant to see anyone else. Therefore, they generally avoided disturbing her after dark.
Liu Yang's gaze remained fixed on the house. Even after Ye Xiaohan closed the door, he maintained that posture as if he could still see what was happening inside through the door.
"What are you looking at? Don't disturb others' sleep. You should go back to sleep too; it's late," Ye Xiaohan said, patting Liu Yang's shoulder with a hint of helplessness.
Liu Yang nodded lightly and turned to leave.
"Hmm? What’s going on with him?" Ye Xiaohan asked Liu Qi, looking at Liu Yang who seemed lost in thought. "Doesn't he look a bit dazed all of a sudden?"
"No way," Six Seven followed Ye Xiaohan's gaze and looked at Six Yang's back, then raised her head seriously and said, "Second Brother hasn't suddenly been dazed; he's always been dazed!"
Ye Xiaohan couldn't help but laugh, "Right! You're the smartest!"
She picked Six Seven up from the ground. "Oh dear, Fat Pig, you're such a chubby little thing that I can barely carry you."
"Giggle." Six Seven affectionately nuzzled her fluffy head against Ye Xiaohan. "I am a Fat Pig! When Sister-in-law can't carry me anymore, I'll carry her."
"Really?" Ye Xiaohan laughed. "You're so good! Then I'll be waiting for that! When you grow up, remember what you just said. If I can't walk anymore, you have to carry me."
Six Seven nodded vigorously, indicating she was serious. "I won't forget!"
"Such a good girl!" Ye Xiaohan praised her generously, causing Six Seven to shyly bury her head in Ye Xiaohan's embrace. By the time Ye Xiaohan carried her back to the room, she found that the little one was already fast asleep, showing no signs of waking up.
For a child who had experienced so much in one night, it was impressive that she had held on until now. Ye Xiaohan decided not to wake her and gently placed her on the bed.
Fortunately, they had made the bed larger initially because they were worried that Six Seven would be too restless while sleeping and might fall off at night. Now with both of them sleeping there, it didn't feel cramped at all.
Because they were still somewhat anxious about whether those Black-Clad Masked Figures would appear again, both Ye Xiaohan and Six Yang were tense and couldn't truly fall asleep.
Only Six Seven slept more soundly than usual that night because it was rare for Ye Xiaohan to accompany her to bed.
The next morning, when Ye Xiaohan woke up, her head felt heavy. Just thinking about the house that had turned to ashes waiting for her to clean up made her head ache even more.
