Six Seven twisted and turned in Six Yang's arms, reaching out with his short hands as if trying to grasp Ye Xiaohan's door.
However, it was of no use; he was directly carried away by Six Yang.
Gu Bei could not stay for long, lest he be used by those with ulterior motives. Moreover, he had matters to attend to; the person who had harmed him would not be dealt with so easily!
He took a deep glance into the room, as if trying to see Ye Xiaohan through the closed door, before quietly stepping outside.
When Ye Xiaohan finally woke up again, it was already the next morning.
It was morning, but not yet bright; the darkness of night had faded into a grayish hue, allowing only vague outlines to be seen.
She had woken up from hunger.
Once the biological clock is disrupted, it is not an easy thing to reset. Human physiological needs are instinctual. When hungry, one thinks of food; when thirsty, one thinks of water.
Since she had eaten some snacks yesterday, Ye Xiaohan had not consumed anything else. Although she was still somewhat groggy, her body instinctively awakened, demanding energy replenishment.
Feeling her flat stomach, Ye Xiaohan helplessly climbed out of bed, preparing to find something to eat.
As soon as she stepped off the bed, she was startled by a dark figure hunched over her desk.
Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be Gu Bei.
"Ha." Ye Xiaohan patted her chest; people could really scare each other to death. If this continued, her heart condition might worsen.
But why was Gu Bei in her room?
Looking at Gu Bei sprawled over the desk, seemingly still asleep, Ye Xiaohan decided not to wake him. She tiptoed past him and opened the door.
The wooden door creaked slightly, a reminder of its troublesome nature; no matter how careful one was, there would always be the sound of friction.
Ye Xiaohan turned her head to see if Gu Bei had been disturbed. Sure enough, she saw him sit up straight, glancing toward the bed.
"Xiao Han!" Upon noticing the blanket thrown aside and the absence of her figure, Gu Bei sprang up and rushed to the bedside.
Ye Xiaohan raised her hand in a gesture of reassurance. "I'm here."
"Huh?" Gu Bei turned in surprise, spotting Ye Xiaohan standing by the door. "Xiao Han, why are you up? Are you feeling unwell?"
Ye Xiaohan pointed to her grumbling stomach. "Hungry."
"Oh, I see." Gu Bei sighed in relief and walked toward her. "Wait a moment; I'll make something for you."
He had nearly been startled, thinking something was wrong.
Gu Bei moved swiftly, soon preparing a lavish breakfast spread. Ye Xiaohan stood by, helping to taste the dishes. Once breakfast was ready, she ate until she felt somewhat satisfied.
After filling her stomach, she finally felt better and slowed down from her earlier frantic pace.
Gu Bei watched her eat with a gentle gaze, which Ye Xiaohan eventually caught.
"What are you staring at? Can it be eaten? Hurry up and eat," she said playfully, using her chopsticks to add some vegetables to Gu Bei's bowl.
Gu Bei picked up his chopsticks and joined her for breakfast. It was only then that he realized he was actually quite hungry himself.
After finishing their meal, it was still early in the day. Ye Xiaohan felt energized and didn’t want to go back to sleep, so Gu Bei kept her company as they chatted.
"Sorry."
Suddenly, Gu Bei spoke up to apologize. Ye Xiaohan was initially puzzled, but then recalled previous events and thought that Gu Bei was still feeling guilty for not rescuing her in time. Or perhaps, in Gu Bei's view, it was his fault for not being cautious enough, which led her to encounter such a situation.
"It's not your fault at all, and I won't be defeated so easily," Ye Xiaohan reiterated. "Accidents happen unexpectedly; that's what makes them accidents."
Gu Bei's strong sense of responsibility sometimes left others feeling helpless.
"But this isn't an accident at all." Gu Bei didn't feel any relief from Ye Xiaohan's comforting words; instead, he felt even more guilty because she was trying to console him. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't provoked Liu Susu, you wouldn't have had to go through this."
Ye Xiaohan didn't expect Gu Bei to be so hard on himself. It made sense, though; since Gu Bei had already caught those thugs and found out where Ye Xiaohan was, he could use the same method to extract information about who was behind them.
"So it really was her." After suspecting Liu Susu for a while, hearing it confirmed from Gu Bei didn't surprise Ye Xiaohan too much.
It was Gu Bei who was taken aback. "When did you find out?"
"I guessed," Ye Xiaohan shrugged. "Who told me to be kind to others? I hardly have any enemies. Just a couple of rabid dogs chasing after me; it's hard not to figure it out."
Gu Bei said with guilt, "It's all because of me. I rejected Liu Susu, and that made her feel humiliated, which is why she targeted you."
That sounded so awkward to Ye Xiaohan. She countered, "So are you saying you shouldn't have rejected her? That you should have just accepted her advances?"
How dare he provoke a married woman? Ye Xiaohan almost wanted to give him two thumbs up.
"That's not what I mean!" Gu Bei quickly explained. "I just think that if it weren't for my relationship with you, she wouldn't have gone after you. It's all my fault."
The words sounded even more unsettling.
Ye Xiaohan glared at Gu Bei and said, "What do you mean by 'what relationship'? What kind of relationship do we have? Are you suggesting that I should never get involved with you again?"
"Of course not!" Gu Bei exclaimed, flustered. "That's not what I meant! I mean, I didn't mean it like that!"
Ye Xiaohan couldn't help but chuckle inwardly; it was amusing to tease Gu Bei. "Alright, I understand what you mean. No need to make it worse."
"You did that on purpose." Seeing the unmistakable smile on Ye Xiaohan's face, Gu Bei realized. He wasn't angry; instead, he felt relieved.
Ye Xiaohan laughed and said, "I just thought you were being too serious and wanted to lighten the mood. You don’t need to take this to heart; the real culprit is Liu Susu. She’s the one who should feel guilty and atone for her actions."
"This is a bit tricky," Gu Bei replied. "I've already sent someone to gather evidence. Until then, we can't do anything to her."
It was frustrating for Gu Bei to see the perpetrator right in front of him yet be unable to bring her to justice and avenge his beloved.
Ye Xiaohan then realized that Gu Bei's earlier apology was not only because she had suffered an accident but also because he felt incapable of avenging her himself.
What a fool.
While silently scolding him, Ye Xiaohan couldn't help but feel a rush of sweetness in her heart.
"There's no need to rush," Ye Xiaohan said. "The net of heaven is vast but not one can escape its grasp. Those who commit sins will eventually pay for them. Let's stay calm and wait for what is bound to come."
She wasn't a saint; after all that Liu Susu had done to her, did she really think she could forgive her? Not a chance.
What was owed must be repaid with interest.
"Alright, I trust you." Gu Bei looked into Ye Xiaohan's eyes, feeling a sense of calm wash over him.
Indeed, there was no need to rush; they had plenty of time to make those people pay the price.
As if recalling something, Gu Bei reached into his clothing and fished out an object, presenting it to Ye Xiaohan. It was an exquisite hairpin.
"Take this for self-defense," Gu Bei said. "I had it specially made, and it contains a unique firework inside."
He pointed to one end of the hairpin, which was carved into a blooming peony. "This part can be opened, like this."
He gently twisted a few of the flower petals, and with a soft click, the flower split open in the middle.
Ye Xiaohan leaned closer to see a plump Wax Ball hidden inside.
"The Wax Ball is waterproof and moisture-proof, preventing the gunpowder from becoming ineffective," Gu Bei explained. "The gunpowder inside is enough for one distress signal. It's simple to use: just break the outer wax layer, ignite the fuse, and throw it into the air when you're in danger."
"Sounds interesting," Ye Xiaohan said as she examined it. "Will this little ball be visible to the reinforcements?"
Gu Bei nodded confidently. "No problem. It's specially made by skilled military experts; its effect is excellent. Even in the shadows, it can be clearly seen from miles away."
"This is great." Ye Xiaohan happily accepted it; this was essentially an ancient communication device.
If she encountered a similar situation again, she would be able to call for help in time.
