The atmosphere in the restaurant was lively, but one person was in a terrible mood.
This person was none other than Gu Rong, who had been trying to eliminate Gu Bei but instead found himself repeatedly rebutted by the officials in the court and scrutinized by the emperor.
Gu Rong had initially planned to wait outside the palace gates for Gu Bei to arrive, intending to tell him not to get too complacent and not to underestimate him just because he was temporarily in favor.
However, when Gu Bei was summoned by the emperor, Gu Rong could only return home in disgrace.
The more he thought about it on the way back, the angrier he became. Gu Rong simply couldn't understand why others always seemed to view him as inferior to Gu Bei.
After all, Gu Bei was just a taciturn good-for-nothing who couldn't even manage basic social interactions aside from fighting.
As for fighting, Gu Rong didn't think it was anything to boast about; he believed he could achieve the same victories if given the chance.
Gu Bei had merely seized a favorable opportunity and had become the object of everyone's admiration. It was utterly unfair!
With a belly full of frustration, Gu Rong hurried back to his residence.
Just as he stepped inside, he collided with Liu Susu, who was rushing out.
"You’re back? It's quite early today," she casually greeted him, eager to leave without wasting time on Gu Rong.
Looking at Liu Susu, who was dressed up extravagantly, Gu Rong's anger flared even more. "Early? Just look at what time it is! You should have been back by now!"
Liu Susu returned home later than usual, yet she felt it was still early. This clearly indicated that she had never paid attention to what time her husband came back from court.
"As a wife, you can't even fulfill your basic responsibilities and show any concern for your husband. What kind of nonsense is this?"
Gu Rong vented all his anger on Liu Susu, clearly misplacing his frustration. It was just Liu Susu's bad luck to be caught in the crossfire; usually, Gu Rong wouldn't even bother to communicate with her.
Having been unjustly scolded, Liu Susu was not one to be bullied. Anger surged within her, and she retorted, "Have you lost your mind? Why are you so furious? So what if I haven’t cared about you? When have you ever treated me as your wife and shown any concern for me?"
"How dare you talk back?" Gu Rong, having endured a day full of frustrations outside, lost his composure at home as well. He blurted out, "Do you really think you're my wife and not Gu Bei's fiancée?"
Liu Susu was taken aback and exclaimed, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Once the words left Gu Rong's mouth, he felt increasingly uneasy. "I've always sensed something off about you. When you married me, what were your true intentions? Did you think that with Gu Bei gone, I would simply be a substitute?"
He sneered, "No wonder Liu Chancellor has been so invested in Gu Bei's case, personally searching for clues and trying to clear his name."
"You've lost your mind; you're talking nonsense!" Liu Susu couldn't believe that Gu Rong would even drag Liu Chancellor into this. Furious, she replied, "The case of Gu Bei was personally assigned by the Emperor. My father naturally has to take it seriously. Would other officials dare to act against the Emperor's wishes?"
Gu Rong merely scoffed, refusing to listen to Liu Susu's explanations. "Then tell me why he favored Gu Bei during the court session and opposed me? He could have chosen not to speak; would the Emperor force him to support Gu Bei?"
"How would I know about court matters? My father knows what he should do; it's not for me or you to instruct him!"
Liu Susu could hardly believe that Gu Rong would dare speak ill of Liu Chancellor. He should consider his own position before disrespecting such a high-ranking official!
"I have no idea what you Liu Family are thinking. You're all a bunch of bastards, always turning your elbows outward!" Gu Rong shouted in fury. "Don't think that by helping Gu Bei clear his name, you can still have some ambiguous connection with him!"
He yelled at Liu Susu, "Look at your own identity. You are no longer Gu Bei's fiancée; you are my wife, Gu Rong! If you want to associate with some outside man, you better ask me if I agree first!"
"You are simply unreasonable!"
Liu Susu's face turned pale with anger. Although she and Gu Rong had never had much affection for each other and often quarreled, it was the first time they had openly torn each other apart like this.
Liu Susu never expected that in Gu Rong's eyes, she was seen as such a worthless person.
She had always thought that as the daughter of the Chancellor, marrying Gu Rong was beneath her. At that time, she didn't have many choices and little time to consider; deep down, she felt she deserved a better man.
But now Gu Rong belittled her to nothing, making her feel deeply that she had misjudged her choice back then.
"Get out of my way; I don't want to waste any more words with you today!" Liu Susu said as she walked past Gu Rong toward the exit.
Gu Rong grabbed her arm and shouted, "Where do you think you're going?"
Liu Susu struggled free and retorted angrily, "I'm going back to my family! Do I need to report to you where I'm going? I can go wherever I want!"
"You’re not going anywhere today!"
Hearing that Liu Susu wanted to return to the Liu Family, Gu Rong suddenly recalled how Liu Chancellor had opposed him in the court and favored Gu Bei, which had given the emperor enough reason to reinstate Gu Bei.
"Liu Chengye, who do you really consider your son-in-law? I don't think it's me, Gu Rong, but that envied Gu Bei instead!"
Gu Rong sneered, cursing the Liu Family in his heart. This damned Liu Family, just like Gu Bei, was an annoying bunch of scoundrels!
"Let go of me! Let go!" Liu Susu struggled desperately as Gu Rong half-dragged her along, but she couldn't match his strength and was pulled along.
The servants nearby were already frozen in shock, too afraid to step forward. Only her personal maid, whom she had brought from the Liu Family, timidly approached to persuade Gu Rong, only to be shoved aside.
Gu Rong ignored her struggles and dragged Liu Susu back to the room, pushing her inside and shutting the door behind him.
"Someone, lock the door!" Gu Rong commanded as he watched the servant secure it. He coldly remarked, "You won't be going anywhere today; stay inside and reflect on what you should be doing!"
With that, Gu Rong left with all the servants, leaving Liu Susu banging on the door behind him. He turned a deaf ear to her cries.
"Gu Rong, how dare you treat me like this! I'm going to tell my father and make sure you can't survive in the capital anymore!"
Liu Susu pounded on the door, but there was no response from outside. Her hands ached from hitting the door, and after struggling for a while longer, she exhausted most of her strength and leaned against the door, tears streaming down her face.
Why was her life so bitter? At such a young age, she had thought that an arranged marriage would lead to a good future, only to find her fiancé missing.
After finally managing to remarry, she encountered such a cold-hearted husband. Since their marriage, there hadn't been a single happy day.
In contrast to Gu Rong's indifference and brutality, Liu Susu couldn't help but compare him to Gu Bei.
Gu Bei, though not warm towards others, was always courteous and never gave anyone a reason to dislike him. Given his status, even if he were less considerate, no one would mind.
Yet Gu Bei had remained consistent over the years, never changing his attitude towards others despite his rising position.
If it were Gu Rong, that person would likely make things difficult for anyone he found displeasing once he gained power. Liu Susu had seen Gu Rong's true nature clearly during the year and more since she married him.
To achieve his goals, he would stop at nothing, meticulously calculating every little detail.
Liu Susu suddenly regretted not holding on a little longer back then.
If she had just persisted for another year until Gu Bei returned, she would still be Gu Bei's rightful fiancée now.
Now that Gu Bei had cleared his name and regained his official position, according to the original plan, they could get married.
Then Liu Susu would not just be the wife of a man who vented his frustrations but a glorious general's wife!
Gu Bei had treated her so well in the past; if they married, he would surely cherish her even more. She would become the envy of all women in the capital, with everyone else filled with jealousy.
With comparison comes distinction. After contrasting Gu Rong and Gu Bei, Liu Susu realized there was an immense difference between the two.
Compared to Gu Bei, Gu Rong was simply insignificant.
