"Is that true?" Ye Xiaohan asked, a bit surprised. "That voice appeared again? When?"
"It was right after you came," Liu Yang replied. "Then it didn’t show up again. I thought if it didn’t appear for two consecutive times, it wouldn’t come back, but unexpectedly, the voice started again."
"Why didn’t you tell me earlier?" Ye Xiaohan said, a hint of reproach in her tone. If he had informed her sooner, they could have resolved it quickly, and he wouldn’t have to deal with those dark circles under his eyes.
"I saw you were so busy lately, neglecting your sleep and meals, so I didn’t want to disturb you," Liu Yang explained. "The strange sound doesn’t appear all the time; sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not. I thought I could find the reason myself."
Unexpectedly, he hadn’t found the cause, and his anxiety had only worsened. The sudden appearance of the strange sound followed by its abrupt disappearance left no trace behind, making it hard not to think of ghosts.
Seeing him looking so pitiful and dejected, yawning after just a few words and slumping down in his seat, she couldn’t bring herself to be angry.
"There are no ghosts in this world; people scare themselves. If there were really ghosts, why would they keep bothering you instead of coming to scream in front of me?"
Ye Xiaohan was an atheist; she didn’t believe in the existence of ghosts. If people turned into ghosts after death, then when a ghost killed someone, that person would become a ghost too. Wouldn’t that be awkward?
"Sister-in-law, I didn’t believe it at first either, but this time... if there isn’t a female ghost involved, I really can’t explain it!"
Liu Yang whispered the words "female ghost," as if afraid something in the air might hear him.
His nervous demeanor looked quite foolish to Ye Xiaohan. She almost laughed out loud but held it back to avoid hurting his feelings.
"How about this: you can switch rooms," Ye Xiaohan suggested. "Since that strange sound only appears in the study, if you stay away from it, you won’t hear it."
At least he could get a good night’s sleep and not turn into a panda.
"I don’t want to," Liu Yang refused. "The room I’m sleeping in is particularly bright and cheerful; it makes me feel good. I can soak up sunlight from morning till night. I don’t want to move."
Ye Xiaohan hadn’t expected him to be so stubborn and chuckled. "If you’re so attached to that room, then without switching rooms, you’ll just have to stay up all night listening to the female ghost scream."
"Don’t say that, sister-in-law!" Liu Yang scooted closer with a flattering smile. "You’re so smart; you can handle anything. A mere female ghost can’t possibly outsmart you! Please help me catch this ghost so I can have some peace and get a decent sleep."
Ye Xiaohan glanced at him and said, "You're the one with too many problems. Seven is better behaved than you, and everyone else is having a great time. If I don't go, you either change rooms or just deal with it."
She was almost too busy to practice her cloning technique, and here Six Yang was dragging her into this nonsense.
"Sister-in-law, please help me catch it!" Six Yang pleaded. "If I can catch the female ghost, I’ll be able to live happily too, even better than Seven!"
Six Yang kept pestering Ye Xiaohan, using every tactic he could think of to get her to agree to help him catch the ghost. If she refused, he wouldn’t let up.
With no choice but to give in to his persistence and unable to bear seeing him with dark circles under his eyes looking like a panda, Ye Xiaohan finally agreed.
"Tonight we’ll switch rooms. I’ll sleep in yours, and I want to see what kind of female ghost has you so enchanted that you can't sleep."
She deliberately twisted the facts, provoking a vigorous rebuttal from Six Yang as he tried to prove his innocence regarding the ghost, which made Ye Xiaohan laugh heartily.
That night, when it was time for bed, Ye Xiaohan went to Six Yang's room. She lay wide awake on the bed, waiting for his strange noises to appear.
Last time she had waited all night and heard nothing. This time she had no expectations either; she didn’t really believe anything unusual would happen.
Ah, wait. Ye Xiaohan corrected herself in her mind; it wasn’t about hope—she truly didn’t want anything out of the ordinary to occur. She just wanted everything to remain calm and stable.
Regarding this female ghost situation, Ye Xiaohan leaned towards believing it was some sound caused by environmental factors. She decided to uncover the truth so that Six Yang could feel at ease and return to a normal life.
As the night deepened, fatigue began to weigh on Ye Xiaohan. Her eyelids started to droop; she could barely keep them open. In her drowsy state, she thought it might be best to just sleep. If nothing had happened by this late hour, it probably wouldn’t.
Even if she waited longer, it would likely end up like last time—a waste of a precious night and a good sleep.
Ye Xiaohan kept reassuring herself; there was really no need for much effort. Two voices appeared in her head: one said, "Let’s go to sleep," while the other raised its hands in agreement, "Sure, sure!"
Having successfully convinced herself, Ye Xiaohan closed her eyes and quickly fell asleep.
However, not long after she shut her eyes, something strange happened.
A sharp voice echoed from afar, suddenly piercing her ears. The sound was hauntingly shrill, like the dying struggles of some creature, stirring fear in anyone who heard it.
"Ah!" Ye Xiaohan jolted awake from her dreams, her ears perked up as she entered a state of alertness.
What was that sound? Could it be the ghost of the Sixth Yang?
Ye Xiaohan hadn’t undressed before going to bed, and now she climbed out of bed, cautiously moving around the room while trying to discern where the sound was coming from.
Strangely, the voice was intermittent and never faded away, yet its source remained elusive.
No matter which corner she stood in, it sounded as if it were right there, yet also somewhere else. Even standing in the middle felt the same.
How peculiar! How could this happen? Ye Xiaohan focused her mind and continued searching.
The sound was faint; she could hear it, but when she tried to pinpoint it, it vanished into thin air, leaving only an echo that lingered like ripples in water gradually dissipating.
Was this the voice of a ghost? Ye Xiaohan listened closely but found it indistinct. The sound had reached an extreme, resembling a beast's howl, devoid of any human rationality.
To find any feminine quality within it was challenging; it was particularly sharp and thin, like a needle that could pierce one's ear.
Just as Ye Xiaohan was searching for clues, the scream suddenly ceased.
What was going on? Had it fled in fear as dawn approached without her noticing?
Ye Xiaohan glanced at the color outside and then at the hourglass on her table; it was still midnight, with the moon hanging brightly in the sky!
She surveyed her surroundings; there seemed to be no place for anyone to hide. She didn’t believe in ghosts; if this was indeed a human voice, then someone was playing tricks.
Ye Xiaohan wandered around the room, her spirits lifted. She wouldn’t rest until she got to the bottom of this mystery.
"Woo..."
Suddenly, a faint voice drifted through the air, like fragments scattered by the wind, intangible and elusive.
This voice was not as piercing as the previous one, yet it sent a chill down Ye Xiaohan's spine. It sounded just like something out of a horror movie!
She rubbed her arms where goosebumps had suddenly appeared, secretly admiring Yang. To be able to sleep in such a place without breaking down was impressive; it seemed she had misjudged him.
He was not a coward but a true hero!
Ye Xiaohan perked up her ears, trying to distinguish the sound that resembled both the wind and a woman weeping. The sweat on her back clung to her clothes, as if something were trying to burrow into her.
Just as she was fully focused, the crying abruptly stopped and vanished.
What is going on? Ye Xiaohan thought angrily. Can’t you just show all your tricks at once? This piecemeal approach is so annoying!
“Ah!”
As if hearing Ye Xiaohan's thoughts, that piercing scream erupted again, catching her off guard and startling her.
It was truly a torment for her heart. Ye Xiaohan pressed against her wildly beating chest; if this continued, she would end up with dark circles under her eyes.
This scream was brief, lasting only a few moments before it ceased, interspersed with low moans filled with endless sorrow, like a ghostly woman wronged by the world, lamenting in the endless night.
