"Hmph!" Liu Yuan angrily flicked his sleeve and sat back down.
"What other actions has Ye Xiaohan taken?" Liu Yuan couldn't believe that Ye Xiaohan could be so carefree. Gu Bei had left, and she could still happily continue living here.
The Shadow Guard's heart raced with anxiety, fearing that he might provoke Liu Yuan's anger again, which would lead to trouble for him. "Reporting to you, Young Master, there is nothing else. Ye Xiaohan has been idle and hasn't done anything."
Liu Yuan frowned and asked, "What about the others from the Li family?"
The Shadow Guard replied, "Li Yang goes to school on time and comes back to do his homework; otherwise, he plays chess with Li Yi. There are no unusual behaviors. Li Yi is still working alongside the servants of the Li family. As for the two of them, they just follow Ye Xiaohan out to eat or play at home."
"Not a single abnormality?" Liu Yuan was unwilling to let it go and pressed further.
The Shadow Guard felt his scalp tingle with fear, worried that he might inadvertently anger Liu Yuan. The consequences could be light punishment or even losing his life.
"Reporting to you, Young Master, there truly is nothing else. I dare not slack off and am keeping a close watch. If there is any abnormality, I will report it to you immediately!"
With no more information to extract, Liu Yuan could only angrily dismiss him. The Shadow Guard felt as if he had been granted a new lease on life as he quickly retreated.
Liu Yuan paced back and forth in his study, fuming. This woman, even after being abandoned by Gu Bei, could still live happily—it was simply incomprehensible!
Shouldn't she be weeping bitterly at this time, spending her days in tears? Why did she seem to recover so quickly after just a brief moment of sadness?
If that were the case, his scheme to sow discord and his efforts to break them apart would turn into a complete joke!
No! He couldn't be the only one suffering; Ye Xiaohan and Gu Bei should also be equally unhappy. Why should they be carefree while he was not?
Liu Yuan slammed his fist onto the hard rosewood desk. It didn't make much noise, but he felt a sharp pain that was all too clear to him.
"Ye Xiaohan, don't get too smug. You won't be laughing for long!"
Liu Yuan clenched his aching hand, gritting his teeth in a vow that he would make them pay dearly.
Meanwhile, Ye Xiaohan, the target of his malicious curse, lay exhausted on her bed, feeling as if she had been run over by a truck. Every bone in her body felt like it was about to fall apart, and she had no desire to move at all.
The window was still open. Ye Xiaohan tilted her head to glance at it but decided against getting up. The room was filled with mosquito-repelling herbs, so there shouldn't be any bugs coming in. Let it stay open.
Sleepiness washed over her in waves, and Ye Xiaohan felt her eyelids growing heavy until they finally stuck together. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't open them. The sound of insects drifting in through the window felt like a hypnotic symphony, urging her to slip into a deep slumber.
As the night deepened, everything grew quiet; even the insects seemed to tire and retreat into silence.
Ye Xiaohan found herself dreaming. In her dream, she returned to her modern home, carrying a new bag that she hadn't had time to unpack as she wandered through a bustling mall.
The mall was crowded and lively. Surrounded by people, Ye Xiaohan felt like she belonged there, yet for some reason, there was an underlying sense of dissonance within her.
Had the taste of ice cream changed? Or was the movie playing not one she liked? Ye Xiaohan asked herself repeatedly but seemed to forget the answers, lost in confusion.
"Sister-in-law!"
Suddenly, someone called out to her from behind. Ye Xiaohan wanted to turn around; the voice sounded familiar, and she felt she should know who it was. But no matter how hard she tried, her body refused to move.
"Sister-in-law! Wake up!"
The voice grew louder and more urgent.
Ye Xiaohan felt a surge of anxiety wash over her, beads of sweat forming on her forehead as if she were engulfed in flames.
"Wake up, sister-in-law, there's a fire!" The voice was close to her ear, accompanied by a force shaking her vigorously, the sensation too real to ignore.
Ye Xiaohan's heart skipped a beat as she blinked her sore eyes, groggily taking in her surroundings.
"Li Yang, Qi, what are you doing here? It's late at night; why aren't you sleeping?" Ye Xiaohan propped herself up, only then realizing something was off.
"Hey, why is it so hot?" She looked up in surprise, pointing towards the open door. "Li Yang, is it bright outside? What's that red light over there?"
Li Yang hurriedly handed her clothes, urging her to get dressed quickly. "It can't be bright at this hour; there's a fire! Someone set it! It's already burning outside; sister-in-law, hurry up and get dressed! We need to escape!"
"What? Someone set a fire?" Ye Xiaohan quickly put on her clothes while asking for details. "How do you know it's arson? Where did the fire start? What about Uncle Li and Round?"
As she got dressed, Li Yang quickly asked where Ye Xiaohan kept her savings and tidied up as much as he could while answering her.
"It started at the front door. I woke up thirsty in the middle of the night and saw light coming from the entrance. When I got closer, I smelled kerosene; it couldn't have just rained kerosene right at my doorstep! On my way here, I woke Mr. Li and told him to bring Round with him."
Ye Xiaohan nodded. "You're right; spreading out in a situation like this makes it more dangerous. You hold onto that good stuff; Qi, come here and I'll carry you. Once they arrive, we'll find an exit and escape."
While they spoke, Li Yi arrived with Round.
Ye Xiaohan reminded everyone to stick together and encouraged them. "Stay close; don't worry. This fire doesn't look too big; we can make it out!"
Everyone nodded and quickly left the room, running outside.
Li Yang had already checked the front door; it was where the fire had first ignited and was now raging fiercely, making it impossible to pass through. They could only head for the Corner Gate, hoping the situation would be better there.
However, before they even reached the Corner Gate, that hope was dashed. From a distance, they could see that area was completely engulfed in flames, the fire no less fierce than at the front door.
The intense heat of the fire could be felt even from a distance, with scorching waves of air hitting them. In an instant, it could evaporate the moisture from their bodies, leaving their mouths dry.
"Sister-in-law, there's no way out! The walls are burning, and even the courtyard has caught fire. The whole house is drenched in oil; the fire is spreading too quickly!"
"Who the hell is responsible for this? Setting fires like a madman—do they have no regard for the rule of law?" Six Yang cursed angrily.
"Enough! We'll deal with them later. Right now, we need to save ourselves!" Ye Xiaohan's mind raced as he protected Six Qi in his arms and began to think of a solution.
It was impossible to rush outside; the fire was too fierce. Before they could make it out, they would be reduced to ashes. They had to find another way.
If they couldn't charge out, they had to look for a way to survive inside.
Hide in the lake and wait for the fire to pass?
No way! That artificial lake would boil over, and they'd end up like hot pot ingredients.
Moreover, the path to the lake was already ablaze; they couldn't go that way either.
What other places wouldn't be engulfed by flames?
The underground?
The basement!
Suddenly, Ye Xiaohan had a brilliant idea.
"Follow me! We're going to the Underground Chamber that Uncle Li took us to before! It's secluded and underground; the fire won't reach there, and the temperature won't be too high. Let's hide there for now!"
With her reminder, everyone realized that it was indeed a good choice.
Just before the fire reached that row of houses, the group managed to escape into the Underground Chamber without any mishaps.
Although the chamber was simple, it was dug deep enough that they couldn't feel the commotion from above.
After a moment of relief, everyone was panting with exhaustion. Six had lost a shoe on the way, but she didn't disturb the adults and quietly tiptoed beside Ye Xiaohan.
That night, despite not hearing any sounds, each person felt as if a storm was raging in their hearts, unable to rest peacefully.
After enduring the night with their eyes wide open, Ye Xiaohan decided to stay inside a bit longer for safety. Once he calculated that enough time had passed and the fire should have been extinguished, he ventured out to check the situation.
Six disagreed and insisted on going first. Unable to stop him, Ye Xiaohan took him along as they crawled out.
As soon as they opened the entrance to the chamber, they knew something was wrong.
The air was filled with the smell of burnt debris, and various ashes floated around them.
They moved aside the charred remnants of walls and stepped outside, only to find that the entire house had been reduced to ashes.
Only a few secluded corners remained, with half a wall still standing and a few blue tiles that had already turned black from the smoke.
