Chapter Eight: Reeds and Rushes
After leaving Ziying University, Zhou Xuanyu headed to Xiang Hall.
The night was already deep, yet the Zhou Family Mansion remained brightly lit, shining as if to deliberately flaunt its presence amidst the tranquil darkness.
He got out of the car, and the doorbell was answered almost immediately. An elderly woman opened the door for him, followed by two young bodyguards dressed in black suits.
“Aunt Jiang.”
Zhou Xuanyu spoke first.
Aunt Jiang furrowed her brows, her gaze repeatedly scanning him, and a layer of mist gradually formed in her cloudy eyes.
She opened her mouth, trembling as she called out to him, “Second Master.”
“Second Master, you’re back…” She kept repeating this phrase, though there was clearly much more she wanted to say.
Zhou Xuanyu patted Aunt Jiang’s shoulder and went straight upstairs.
The door to the study on the second floor was slightly ajar, with a faint light seeping through the crack. He raised his hand to knock but heard a response from inside before he could.
Zhou Xuan Yong sat at the desk, as if he had been waiting for him for a long time.
“Did it end over at Yatian?”
“Not yet; I came out first.”
Zhou Xuan Yong thought for a moment. The question he most wanted to ask ultimately remained unspoken.
Zhou Xuanyu sat down in front of his elder brother, the desk cluttered with a disordered chess game. He glanced at it and quickly averted his gaze.
"How did it feel going to the company today?"
"Not bad."
"I heard from Gai Lin that Zhou Ziyan recommended someone to fill the vacant position."
Zhou Xuanyu remained silent.
He was aware of this matter; even if Galen hadn't mentioned it to him, he would have known.
"Although it seems a bit unreasonable, just let it slide. After all, it's the first time that kid has interfered with company matters; we should give him some face."
"Yes, rest assured. No one will have objections when that child comes in."
She was exceptional, not only handling his challenges with ease but also responding brilliantly to the subsequent questions even after his initial test.
Zhou Xuan Yong murmured an acknowledgment. He had heard this from Galen as well. Although his younger brother preferred unconventional methods, he always managed to achieve results without leaving any room for criticism. He felt most at ease with him.
The room fell silent for a few seconds. As Zhou Xuanyu poured tea for his brother, he caught sight of a document folder on the side and asked, "Elder brother, has the result come out?"
"It has."
"What is it?"
Zhou Xuan Yong sighed, "The same. Just like the chess game."
Zhou Xuanyu's hand holding the teapot froze for a moment as he glanced again at the chessboard.
The Black and White Pieces were a chaotic arrangement, but it was indeed a deadlock!
"Brother..."
"Compared to Zhou Ziyan, the person I worry about more is you." Zhou Xuan Yong pressed down on the teacup that had been pushed toward him. "Life is like tea, with its ups and downs. You can't let the bitterness of the first sip make you reject the sweetness that follows."
"I know."
"You don't know. If you did, you wouldn't have stayed in France alone for five years. Five years—by now, everything should have faded away. Why are you still so obsessed?"
"I know." Zhou Xuanyu repeated the same phrase.
As he spoke, a memory flashed through his mind—the girl's clear voice saying, "I still remember that you were afraid of cats..."
Was he afraid of cats? No, it wasn't fear. At most, he was slightly allergic to those furry creatures, so he simply avoided them. He had only shown this aversion in front of her once, and unexpectedly, she had misinterpreted it as fear.
See, time does not erase everything. Even such a trivial preference of his was remembered by someone...
Zhou Xuan Yong looked at his younger brother; his words had struck a chord. Yet even with a furrowed brow, he maintained an air of calm composure. Just looking at his perfect exterior, who could know that beneath it lay a withered heart?
He needed fresh energy or perhaps a woman who possessed such energy. In this regard, if he had even half the skill of that kid Zhou Ziyan, it would be enough...
