Ning Zhiyuan settled down at Ouyang Zixin's home, leaving Bai Su feeling confused again. Just as Yun Tianmo had left, now there was this Ning Zhiyuan. Moreover, this Ning Zhiyuan looked quite ordinary, not at all comparable to Yun Tianmo's handsome appearance.
"Xin'er..."
Ouyang Zixin turned to look at Bai Su upon hearing her call. This was already the umpteenth time that morning Bai Su had addressed her like this. As before, after calling out, she merely sighed deeply without saying anything further.
Ouyang Zixin had asked before, but Bai Su's hesitant demeanor immediately made her surrender, as usually in such situations, whatever Bai Su said would not be very reliable. To avoid adding to her own frustration, she decided to let Bai Su be; after all, calling her a few more times wouldn't cost her anything.
"Miss, here are the dried flowers you requested." Liu Ying and Liu Lvy walked in from outside and noticed Bai Su was also present, so they hurriedly greeted her. However, the usually warm Madam seemed to be ignoring them today for some reason. The two maids exchanged glances and set down what they were carrying before retreating.
These were unusual times; they knew to avoid trouble whenever possible without needing Ouyang Zixin to tell them.
But while they understood this, others did not—
"Xin'er Girl, look at me..." Ning Zhiyuan breezed in from outside, seemingly returning from somewhere with a scent of fresh grass about him, which caught the attention of both Bai Su and Ouyang Zixin.
"Madam Ouyang, you're here."
Ning Zhiyuan put aside his casual demeanor and respectfully greeted Bai Su. After exchanging pleasantries, he quickly reverted to his familiar self and smiled at Ouyang Zixin as if presenting a treasure: "Guess what I found for you?"
"What is it?"
"Look!" Ning Zhiyuan disregarded Bai Su's scrutiny. He was used to doing things his own way and pulled out a small package from his bosom, carefully unwrapping it layer by layer. With each motion, a refreshing scent of grass wafted out, invigorating the air.
Before long, the small package was completely opened, revealing a green pearl wrapped inside. The fragrance emanated from it.
Ouyang Zixin leaned in to take a sniff. Although she did not dislike the scent of grass, she still couldn't bring herself to like it and pushed Ning Zhiyuan's hand away. "It does smell refreshing." It felt somewhat like the menthol balm on Earth that one would apply when feeling tired or sluggish.
"Here, this is for you." Ning Zhiyuan pushed something over again, saying, "It's especially effective for refreshing your mind."
"For me?" Ouyang Zixin didn't want it. This kind of thing was fine to smell occasionally, but she couldn't stand it if she had to smell it all the time.
Just as she was about to refuse, Bai Su suddenly spoke up, "Why does Young Master Ning want to give this to Xin'er?"
Bai Su looked at Ning Zhiyuan with a kind, amiable, and appreciative gaze. Even though this man looked quite ordinary, any mother would feel favorably towards him upon seeing how attentive he was towards her daughter.
Ning Zhiyuan felt a bit shy under Bai Su's gaze and chuckled awkwardly. He explained, "I heard that Xin'er’s Mental Power..."
Ouyang Zixin kicked him lightly on the calf. Hearing the sound, Bai Su glanced down but didn't notice anything unusual, so she turned back to Ning Zhiyuan and asked, "What were you saying about Xin'er’s Mental Power?"
Clearly, Ning Zhiyuan knew that Ouyang Zixin didn’t want her mother to know too much. He quickly changed his words: "It's just that girls can feel a bit dizzy in hot weather; her Mental Power isn't great. I just wanted to give her something to refresh her." He then gave Ouyang Zixin a cheeky smile and continued, "Madam Ouyang, why not let me give it to you instead? I didn’t expect to see you here..."
As he spoke, Ning Zhiyuan handed the item directly to Bai Su without giving her a chance to refuse. He pressed it into her hands and said, "Please don’t refuse; Xin'er is the one who rejected me. I’m just borrowing flowers to present to the Buddha. If you refuse again..." He even put on a pitiful expression.
As a mother, Bai Su couldn’t turn down such a display from a young man who was not much older than her daughter. She smiled and accepted it.
"Alright, you two chat; I won’t be in the way." With that, Bai Su stood up to leave.
Although Ouyang Zixin wanted to argue, she thought better of it; explaining would only make her mother think more. So she waved goodbye instead. Meanwhile, Ning Zhiyuan seemed quite pleased with himself as he smiled and saw Bai Su off for quite a distance before turning back.
"You really have inherited your mother's good traits." Bai Su was already a mother but still looked beautiful as ever; Ning Zhiyuan complimented both mother and daughter together.
"Let’s get serious." Ouyang Zixin didn’t believe that Ning Zhiyuan was genuinely there just to give her some essential oil. Moreover, he didn’t seem to realize that Bai Su was also in the room; those earlier comments were likely intentional. However, since he meant no harm, she chose not to call him out on it.
"Tch, boring." Ning Zhiyuan truly disliked Ouyang Zixin's serious demeanor. But since she had said that, he couldn’t keep pretending anymore and straightened his expression. "Yun Jiu sent a letter saying that there will be movements in the Three Kingdoms soon; we should pay attention."
"What action? What should we pay attention to?" Ouyang Zixin looked up at Ning Zhiyuan, her voice unconsciously a bit tense.
"I don't know for now, but it should be something significant. Yun Jiu seems to be on his way to the Capital of the Departed Nation," Ning Zhiyuan said as he poured himself a glass of water and drank it all in one go before continuing, "Master Rong is also on his way."
"Hasn't the uncle been on the road since early morning? Why hasn't he arrived yet?" Considering the time, it had been a while since he last received a message from Rong Yi; he shouldn't be taking this long.
"Hey, why do all these events happen in the Capital of the Departed Nation?" Ouyang Zixin suddenly thought of this point. The farthest she had been from home was probably that one time she went to see Rong Yi. She had never been to Cloud Nation or Dream Nation. It would be nice to have the opportunity to visit those two countries; she originally thought this time would provide such an opportunity, especially since it involved the Bai Clan from Dream Nation.
"There's nothing strange about it. Major events rarely bring good news. Cloud Nation is Yun Jiu's homeland; could he be bringing disaster back home?"
Ouyang Zixin nodded at this reasoning, "Then what about Dream Nation?"
"Dream Nation? A collapsing empire; what major event can it support?" Ning Zhiyuan's expression was cold, appearing light and easy, but his words were chilling.
A collapsing empire!
Anyone else hearing such words would likely drop their jaw in shock, but these two were unfazed—the speaker indifferent, and the listener merely letting it pass by.
"So, it's only Exiled Nation left..." Ouyang Zixin muttered to herself. Is this a trend or just coincidence? Or perhaps, is it inevitable... (To be continued.)
