"Xin'er is back." Bai Su stood outside Yuexin Pavilion, smiling as she watched her daughter approach.
"Mother, why are you standing outside?" Ouyang Zixin hurried over a few steps, pulling Bai Su inside while saying, "It's so hot right now; aren't you afraid of getting sunburned?"
Ever since Ouyang Zixin learned from Zi Yi how Madam Bai treated her mother, she felt even more pity for her. "By the way, Liu Ying, go prepare some cooling soup."
The mother and daughter returned to the room, and Bai Su wore a face full of happiness; it felt wonderful to be cared for by her daughter.
She felt the same way about her own mother, but why...
"Mother, is something wrong?" Logically, at this hour, Bai Su should be resting in her room. Why was she here? Ouyang Zixin wanted to ask on the way but was worried about being overheard, so she waited until they were back in the room to speak.
Recently, Bai Su had been a bit sensitive; even the slightest disturbance could startle her. Ouyang Zixin had gone out in the morning and hadn't returned for lunch. Although she had already informed her mother, she still couldn't help but worry, which was why she stood outside Yuexin Pavilion waiting.
"Nothing much; I just came to see you."
Ouyang Zixin turned to look at the calm-faced Bai Su, feeling a bit reluctant. Everything in the household seemed peaceful, but it was merely an illusion. If she wasn't mistaken, her father was likely trying hard to maintain this calmness to protect her mother.
"Xin'er, about your marriage..."
You said there was nothing wrong!
"Mother, why are you so anxious? Did I do something wrong that makes you want to send me away?" Ouyang Zixin said in a slightly spoiled tone, looking at Bai Su with a pitiful expression.
"Nonsense. That's not true." Bai Su quickly denied it; she felt sorry for her daughter and would never want to send her away. "I just heard your father mention something about Sovereign yesterday..."
"Mother, as long as there’s no clear order from Sovereign, you don't need to worry unnecessarily." Upon hearing this, Ouyang Zixin relaxed. To her, Nangong Tuo's little schemes were hardly worth worrying about; one word from Yun Tianmo could settle everything.
But where exactly was Yun Tianmo right now? What was today's arrangement all about?
Soon after, Liu Ying returned with Liu Lvy. They each carried cooling soup and some pastries.
"Mother, drink this." Ouyang Zixin personally brought a bowl to Bai Su, then sat down herself but didn't drink. She had eaten too much at lunch and was still full; besides, there were still some mysteries in her mind that needed solving. She had no appetite at all.
Bai Su felt somewhat distracted when she saw Ouyang Zixin. She wanted to ask something but didn't know how to start. After casually sipping a few mouthfuls of the cooling soup, she stood up to leave. Before departing, she said to Ouyang Zixin, "Xin'er, I don't want to drive you away; rather, I hope there will be more people to help protect you alongside your father and me."
Taking advantage of Ouyang Zixin's moment of surprise, Bai Su pushed the door open and left.
"Ah..."
Ouyang Zixin truly had no way to deal with her mother. Well, let it be. Since some things couldn't be openly discussed, it was better to keep things as they were for now.
"What’s the situation?" She had left Liu Lvy behind when she went out in the morning to keep an eye on Madam Bai's situation. Now that Liu Lvy had returned, she must have gathered some information.
"Madam Bai hasn't taken any action; she stayed in her room all morning and had her lunch sent in. The lady tried to visit her, but Matriarch turned her away, claiming she was unwell and refused to call for a doctor."
Hearing that her mother had gone to visit Madam Bai again made Ouyang Zixin frown. However, there was no way for her to stop her mother from doing so; after all, they were mother and daughter.
"Just before you returned, I saw a strange-looking bird fly into Matriarch's room, but it quickly flew away. I suspect it might have been a tool for delivering messages," Liu Lvy continued. "I've never seen such a bird in Exiled Nation. Miss, do you think it could have flown over from Dream Nation?"
"From Dream Nation?"
"Yes! Think about it; the Bai Clan is in Dream Nation, and this type of bird hasn't appeared in Exiled Nation. Isn't it possible someone from Dream Nation sent a message to Matriarch?" Liu Lvy expressed her speculation.
"That's unlikely. All the people from Bai Clan who could stand by Matriarch's side are already in Capital of the Departed Nation. Who else would send a message to Matriarch?" Ouyang Zixin tapped her fingers lightly on the table, contemplating the possibility of someone from Dream Nation sending a message. "Did you manage to catch that bird?"
"I wanted to catch it, but Matriarch suddenly called for me, so I missed my chance," Liu Lvy said with some regret. If she could have caught that bird, perhaps they could have gleaned some clues.
"Missing the chance is missing it. If it was indeed a message carrier, the letter would have already fallen into Matriarch's hands by now. Just catching the bird wouldn't be useful," Ouyang Zixin waved her hand dismissively as this matter didn't seem very important anymore. She then asked, "What did Matriarch call you for?"
"Oh, nothing much. She just said there was no hot water in her room and asked me to bring her some."
"Okay, got it. Is there anything else special?"
"Nothing else."
"Since there's nothing more, you can go out first. I want to rest for a while." Having not rested from morning until afternoon, Ouyang Zixin felt somewhat tired. The streets of Capital of the Departed Nation were quite broad; even with her cultivation level, walking around would still tire her out.
She lay on the bed, gazing at the bed frame and the gauze curtains, her mind pondering over Madam Bai, gradually her vision became blurry, and before long, she actually fell asleep...
"Miss, Miss..." Liu Ying's urgent voice sounded from outside the door.
Ouyang Zixin turned over, rubbed her somewhat hazy eyes, wondering what time it was as the room seemed to have grown dim. "Come in."
Hearing the response, Liu Ying pushed the door open and hurried towards Ouyang Zixin. "Miss, Madam Bai suddenly wants to move out. The lady is almost frantic; you should go take a look."
"Move out?" Ouyang Zixin was taken aback, her previous drowsiness vanished instantly. "What time is it now?"
"It's the hour of You."
"When did the Matriarch say she wanted to move out?"
"It's been causing a stir for about an hour. The lady disagrees, and I really had no choice but to..."
Ouyang Zixin got up, preparing to head out when she suddenly looked down at her wrinkled clothes. "Get me a change of clothes; make it more presentable."
Although Liu Ying didn't understand why the Miss wanted to change clothes at this time, she was already accustomed to obeying orders and said nothing further as she quickly began to help her change.
By the time Ouyang Zixin was ready and arrived at the Matriarch's door, the inside was already brightly lit, and she could faintly hear Bai Su's choked voice trying to persuade someone. (To be continued.)
