At the request of Ouyang Zixin, Liu Ying also sat down to eat. There was no way around it; the dishes arranged by Yun Tianmo were simply too many for even two people to finish.
Fortunately, the restaurant had a good location. From the second floor, they could see a pleasant view, and the street below wasn't too noisy, making for a unique dining experience.
"Miss, why did the Ink King bring you here?" Liu Ying couldn't help but ask.
Ouyang Zixin rolled her eyes in exasperation and replied, "Who knows? He isn't coming himself. If you ask me, who should I ask?"
Just as they were finishing their meal, a sudden commotion erupted from next door—
Crash!
They heard the sound of chairs and tables colliding, followed by a person's startled exclamation. Soon after, they could hear a flurry of footsteps coming up the stairs.
Throughout history, restaurants have often been places of trouble. Ouyang Zixin frowned, thinking it was best to leave since they had nearly finished eating. After all, she was a lady; it wouldn't be good if she accidentally got caught up in some dispute.
However, when she pushed open the door to leave, she found that the entrance was blocked. It wasn't directed at her but rather at the people next door. The narrow hallway had become crowded, spilling over to the entrance of her private room.
"Miss, it seems we can't get out now," Liu Ying said as she leaned out to take a look, astonished by the sheer number of people gathered at the staircase.
Ouyang Zixin nodded in agreement. Since they couldn't leave now, it was better to return to their private room. "Close the door."
"Wait!"
As soon as Liu Ying closed the door to the private room, an extremely arrogant voice rang out, accompanied by a large hand pressing against the door.
Ouyang Zixin turned to look, and outside stood a burly man. With a bushy beard and bulging eyes, he looked at Ouyang Zixin with disdain. "Who are you?"
The man was dressed in official attire, appearing to be a constable. After receiving a nod from Ouyang Zixin, Liu Ying quietly responded, "This is Officer. Our young lady is the daughter of Ouyang Xuan. We happen to be dining here; may I ask what brings you?"
In the Capital of the Departed Nation, noble ladies were not to be trifled with. Each noble lady was backed by a formidable family. Liu Ying's words were not meant to be condescending; she simply did not want Ouyang Zixin to get into trouble over some inexplicable matter.
Sure enough, upon hearing that she was from Ouyang Xuan's Mansion, the Officer's expression softened. He stood outside with cupped fists and said, "So it is the young lady of Xuan Shi Mansion. I am here on official business to investigate a case. If I have disturbed your meal, I apologize."
Seeing that he was not rude, Ouyang Zixin casually nodded, indicating that she did not mind.
"Since you are busy with official matters, I won't hinder you. May I leave now?" She had initially thought that the people outside were merely onlookers, but now it seemed mixed up. With an Officer present, it was safe for her to leave without any danger or trouble.
Unexpectedly, the Officer refused to let her go. "I'm sorry, but you cannot leave this restaurant for now."
"Why not?" Liu Ying was somewhat displeased. Investigating a case was one thing; it had nothing to do with them. The young lady had asked politely, yet this man was being unreasonable.
"It would normally be fine for you to leave; however, things have become complicated, and I have a few questions I need to ask you." The burly Officer made his intentions clear and stepped into the private room after apologizing for the intrusion.
Liu Ying intended to stop him, but the Officer moved too quickly for her to react. Frantically, she shouted, "How dare you! What are you doing? Who allowed you to come in?"
It should be noted that there were only two young ladies in this private room; Liu Ying herself was not too concerned, but if anything happened to the young lady, no amount of lives would suffice as compensation.
"Enough." Ouyang Zixin raised her hand to stop Liu Ying and looked at the open door. "It's not like the doors and windows are closed; this is still a public place and shouldn't be an issue."
"Feel free to ask anything, Officer."
The big man raised an eyebrow at Ouyang Zixin's words, thinking that this noble lady was quite different from the typical noblewomen of the capital. If it were anyone else, they would have already screamed or hurled insults, claiming that someone of his status was unworthy to be in the same room with them.
Ouyang Zixin's casual remark unexpectedly earned him some goodwill, though neither of the two young women noticed it.
"Were you dining in this private room just now?"
"Yes."
"Did you hear anything?"
"I heard you arrive."
"What about before that?"
"I didn't hear anything."
Ouyang Zixin and the big man exchanged brief questions and answers, mainly because she had no clues to provide. Besides, she didn't even know what was going on or what could be said.
The big man pondered for a moment, his gaze sweeping across the private room. Although it was spacious, the furnishings were simple, and there were no partitions; it was clear whether anyone was hiding inside. Just as he was about to ask something further, a sudden scream came from next door.
"You may leave," he said hurriedly before rushing out.
"We should go," Ouyang Zixin said. Although she usually enjoyed gossip or listening to stories, she felt it best to avoid matters under investigation.
As the two were walking out of the private room, the sounds from next door became clearer.
"Officer, he's trying to kill me! You have to testify for me!" A woman's voice cried out, trembling with fear.
"You shameless woman, dare to say more and I'll..."
"Ah—"
Crash!
"Stop it, everyone stop! Someone, hold him back!"
"Miss, that voice seems to be..." Liu Ying turned to look, but there were too many people, and she couldn't see anything. However, she recognized that voice.
"Mm." Ouyang Zixin frowned; she had also recognized it. If it weren't for running into this person on the street today, she might have forgotten that voice long ago.
"Ah—" Another scream echoed!
This time, Liu Ying shrank her neck, possibly startled by the scream. In a place like the Capital of the Departed Nation, such things might happen, but definitely not in public or in a restaurant. After all, these would become scandals that would spread through the streets in no time. How terrible must it be to elicit such a scream?
"Hey." Ouyang Zixin stopped and looked up at the second floor. She suddenly had a suspicion: was Yun Tianmo bringing her here today just to let her witness this scene? (To be continued.)
