"Dead?" Bai Zhan's face turned furious upon hearing the report from the servant. He slammed his palm on the shattered stone table in front of him, exclaiming, "Useless trash!" He felt no sorrow for his deceased subordinate; instead, he was angry that they had failed to gather any information before dying.
The servant trembled in fear, his legs shaking uncontrollably as he stood to the side, his teeth chattering.
"Get out!"
Bai Zhan kicked the servant, who fell to the ground and rolled a few times before hurriedly getting up and fleeing.
Bai Zhan glanced at the broken stone table, his anger boiling over. He turned and walked into the room, thinking about how things had been going poorly lately. He needed to come up with a new plan.
"You old fools think that sending someone to the palace means everything is fine? Hmph, you underestimate me." With a thud, Bai Zhan lay down on the bed. He had initially intended to gather some information but ended up with nothing. Fortunately, after several more visits, he finally learned where Baike had been sent.
He hadn't expected that the Bai Clan's Five Elders would have the ability to persuade Nan Gong Yao to help; this was truly surprising. No wonder he couldn't find any trace of Baike despite sending people out.
Hmph, just wait. Baike is my daughter, the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan. She is not someone you can easily control.
As Bai Zhan thought about this, a surge of frustration welled up inside him. He could no longer lie still; he had to act quickly and find Baike as soon as possible.
"Come here."
Hearing Bai Zhan's summons, the guard outside pushed the door open and entered. After cupping his fists in salute, he stood quietly waiting for orders.
"Increase the number of people monitoring Ouyang Xuan's Mansion. If you see Matriarch..." A ruthless glint flashed in Bai Zhan's eyes. The Matriarch was indeed his mother, but a mother who did not support him had no value anymore. If it weren't for the current situation, he wouldn't even bother with her.
The guard stiffened at these words. Although he knew that the clan leader and Matriarch were at odds, directly taking action against her would be a serious taboo within the clan.
"Fool, I told you to bring the person back to me!" Bai Zhan spat, perhaps realizing that his expression was too much. None of his subordinates truly understood his intentions, which left him feeling quite exhausted. He couldn't rush the next steps either. He waved his hand to dismiss everyone and lay back down.

"Since no one has any objections, let's proceed as discussed earlier," Madam Bai's slightly hoarse voice rang out, her tone noticeably more relaxed than it had been in the morning.
The Five Elders, led by the Grand Elder, nodded in agreement; they had no choice but to align for a common goal.
"We will find a way to stall Bai Zhan's people, don't worry," the Grand Elder said, pinching the bridge of his nose. The morning's discussions had been quite taxing. "As for your granddaughter, you can handle the arrangements."
"We need to be quick; we can't afford to waste time," the Second Elder added. This was not a moment for long-term planning; they needed to act swiftly. If Ouyang Zixin had no connection to the Legitimate Daughter, then there was no need to waste time on her anymore; all focus should shift to Baike.
"I understand," Madam Bai sighed. To be honest, she was reluctant to give up on Ouyang Zixin, but Ouyang Zixin was like a thorn in her side—too difficult to control. When necessary, she would have to let go.
Seeing that it was getting late and lunchtime was approaching, Madam Bai stood up to take her leave. The Five Elders escorted her to the door before returning to their respective rooms to rest.
When Madam Bai returned to Ouyang Xuan's Mansion, Bai Su had just sent someone with lunch. She didn't explain where she had been all morning or why she was only returning now; she simply washed her hands and sat down to eat.
Bai Su quietly sat beside her, watching her mother eat.
"Why aren't you eating?" Madam Bai looked up and noticed there were only chopsticks for one. "Where's Liu Ying? Get a set of chopsticks for your lady."
"Mother, it's fine, I'm not hungry," Bai Su stopped Madam Bai and then turned to Lin Ma beside her. "You can go out now; I'll eat with Mother."
Lin Ma bowed slightly and left with the maidservant, leaving Bai Su and her mother alone in the room.
"Do you have something to say?" Madam Bai noticed Bai Su's hesitance and set down her chopsticks. She was already tired and had little appetite; since Bai Su wanted to speak, she decided not to eat anymore.
"Mother, I want to propose marriage to Xin'er," Bai Su hesitated for a moment before finally expressing her intention.
Madam Bai was taken aback upon hearing this. Proposing marriage for her daughter? That had never happened in the Yuhai Continent; it was always the men who came to propose. If this got out, what would people think?
"No way!" Madam Bai immediately rejected the idea without a second thought. Not only was it inappropriate for a daughter to take the initiative in proposing, but her status as the Legitimate Daughter had not yet been confirmed. She could not agree to Ouyang Zixin marrying her.
The Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan could marry, but she must first complete her identity verification and accept the Bright White Stone's recognition before she could wed. Now that Bai Su wanted to propose to Ouyang Zixin, wasn't that equivalent to directly rejecting her rights as the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan?
"Susu, are you out of your mind?" Madam Bai looked at Bai Su, feeling frustrated and helpless. It seemed that her feelings were reflected in her daughter’s actions. One daughter was like this, and now her granddaughter was too. The person she wanted to nurture didn't care about being the Legitimate Daughter, while someone she didn't want to support was fixated on that position. This made her feel like her life was so hard, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Seeing her mother like this made Bai Su feel guilty as well. She quickly stood up and handed over a handkerchief, saying, "Mother, please don't be like this..."
Madam Bai swatted Bai Su's hand away angrily and said, "How can I not be like this when my daughter is so disappointing?" Remembering how she had humbly sought an alliance with the Five Elders today only added to her grievances. "Everything I do is for your sake, but you both are eager to push away my good intentions... Woe is me, why is my life so hard..."
The old lady's lament truly tugged at the heartstrings of those who heard it, bringing tears to their eyes. Bai Su, being soft-hearted by nature, completely forgot about the main point after hearing her mother's outcry. It wasn't until she left the Matriarch's room and was reminded by Lin Ma that she remembered today's purpose.
"Sigh..." Bai Su sighed; there were indeed some things she just couldn't do.
"Madam, you are too soft-hearted," Lin Ma said as she supported Bai Su and sighed alongside her. She felt caught between the young lady she had watched grow up and the long-absent Matriarch; even she found it uncomfortable being in the middle, let alone Madam Bai.
"Sigh..." (To be continued.)
