Although the night at Ouyang Manor was not particularly peaceful, it was relatively warm, while the night in Leaving the Royal Palace was anything but calm.
"Ah—"
Another scream echoed through the night. The palace, which should have been utterly quiet, was brightly lit and bustling with people, yet it could not mask the occasional cries that pierced the air.
"Ah—"
The screams grew louder...
"How dare you scream?" Nan Gong Yao said angrily, looking at his son, who was panting heavily in front of him. He was furious.
Nangong Tuo was pinned to the bench, continuously howling, "Why should I be embarrassed to scream? You can hit me, but you won't let me scream?"
Nangong Tuo had not originally planned to return to the palace; he intended to stay at Ouyang Zixin's house for a few more days. However, his father's spies quickly discovered that he had emerged from the Millennium Ruins and hurriedly reported back to the palace. Then someone came to bring him back. He was already unwilling in his heart, thinking there must be some important matter at hand. In the end, there was nothing significant, and he ended up getting a beating from his father just for saying a couple of things.
"Hit you? What's wrong with that? Look at your lack of ambition!" Nan Gong Yao became even angrier when he heard Nangong Tuo speak. "Tell me, how long have you been thinking about Ouyang Zixin? And now you still haven't sorted it out? That's not all; as soon as you come back, you complain to me about what?"
"I just said that Yun Tianmo wants to get ahead and asked you to help arrange a marriage quickly!" Nangong Tuo truly did not think he had said anything wrong or provoked his father’s anger. This beating really left him feeling unjustified.
"Is that all? You little brat! It's one thing not to practice diligently on ordinary days, but now you want your father to help you marry? Yun Tianmo is a prince of Cloud Nation, and Ouyang Zixin is a noble lady of Exiled Nation. You actually come back here complaining that Yun Tianmo wants to get ahead! Tell me, what kind of future do you have?" Nan Gong Yao was practically spitting blood. Even now, his son did not understand what he was angry about; how did he end up with such a foolish child?
"I..." Nangong Tuo wanted to argue back but realized he had no valid reason to be indignant. He immediately wilted and lay there motionless.
Watching his son play dead, Nan Gong Yao suddenly burst into laughter, amused by the sight.
"Everyone, leave," he waved his hand, dismissing everyone from the room. He personally got up to help his son up, looking at him with a half-smile.
Nangong Tuo felt a chill run down his spine under his father's gaze. Whenever his father wore such an expression, it usually meant someone was in trouble. However, in this side hall, apart from his father, there was only himself left. Therefore, seeing that expression on his father's face was definitely not a good sign.
"Um, it's nothing. I'll just go rest now..." Nangong Tuo subtly withdrew his hand and stepped backward toward the door.
"Stop!" Nan Gong Yao had not finished speaking; there was no way he would let him go. Knowing his son well, if he let him escape today, it would be even harder to get information out of him later. So he beckoned and said, "Come here, let's talk. You've been to the Millennium Ruins for these days; what happened?"
Seeing that he couldn't escape, Nangong Tuo had no choice but to steel himself and walk back. He forced a smile and said, "What could happen? I just spent a few days playing among a bunch of rocks and almost got stuck in a stone wall. Luckily, I ran into Zhao Feihong from the Zhao Family; he helped me out." Remembering Zhao Feihong's life-saving grace, Nangong Tuo quickly asked Nan Gong Yao for a favor to give Zhao Feihong a good position in the future.
It wasn't difficult to give Zhao Feihong a position; Nan Gong Yao agreed with a light smile. It was best to resolve this matter among the children; if it involved the Zhao Family Head, it would likely require more than just one position to settle.
"I know about this. That day when Zhao Qing brought his son into the palace, he mentioned it," Nan Gong Yao replied. If Zhao Qing hadn't intervened that day, Zhao Feihong might have revealed more information. However, no matter how many people were sent to investigate afterward, there were no further updates. Thinking of this made Nan Gong Yao somewhat displeased. That old fox Zhao Qing had first used the opportunity to deal with the Sidu Family and now seemed to be getting bolder; next time he would have to give him a good talking-to.
"Oh, that's good." Nangong Tuo secretly glanced at Nan Gong Yao, contemplating whether he could repeat his earlier request without provoking another scolding.
"Hmph, which part of you resembles me?" Nan Gong Yao snorted coldly. "It's not difficult to arrange a marriage, but I need to ask Ouyang Hao's opinion as well; he will be coming to the palace these days. I'll ask him tomorrow."
After all, he was his own son; no matter how useless Nangong Tuo might be, Nan Gong Yao would not refuse his request.
"Thank you, Father." Upon hearing that his father agreed to his request, Nangong Tuo felt the pain from earlier fade away completely. His mood instantly brightened as he cheerfully said, "Father, I dare not hide anything; there really wasn't anything special about the Millennium Ruins. Instead, it was full of traps. Just talking about Cloud Nation's Seventh Prince Yun Tianying—he got seriously injured several times inside and nearly died from poison."
Actually, when Yun Tianying was poisoned, Nangong Tuo was not present. What he saw was the situation after Yun Tianying began to rectify things, so it wasn't dangerous at all. The conversation kept going back and forth about "serious injuries" and "almost losing his life." As for Zhao Feihong and Zhao Feiyu disappearing in front of them, Nangong Tuo briefly mentioned it, as it might involve the innocent Ouyang Zixin, so he concealed a bit of information.
"That being said, those who were teleported out from the Millennium Ruins must have failed their trials, right?" Nan Gong Yao initially wondered if any of those people might lie about obtaining treasures or Fortune Day, but after hearing Nangong Tuo's words, it seemed that no one really got anything.
Nangong Tuo nodded. Although he didn't know the conditions for being teleported out, since some had already been sent out before, it indicated that these events had nothing to do with Ouyang Zixin. Those people were not teleported while they were with Ouyang Zixin.
He must remember to tell this news to Ouyang Zixin later, Nangong Tuo thought silently.
"And what about you? Didn't you get anything in the end?" Nan Gong Yao glanced at Nangong Tuo. Seeing his eager expression, it was clear he was daydreaming again.
"Getting Ouyang Zixin is enough!" Nangong Tuo accidentally blurted out what was on his mind. By the time he covered his mouth, it was too late. He quickly smiled sheepishly at his father and brushed it off.
Seeing his son's demeanor, Nan Gong Yao lost interest in asking more questions. It seemed better to bring Yun Tianmo into the palace for a conversation with someone sensible rather than talking to his foolish son.
"Father, don't forget tomorrow."
"Get lost!"
"Hey, I'm leaving now..." (To be continued.)
