“Xin'er, come let your grandmother take a look.” Madam Bai didn’t mind Ouyang Zixin’s address and smiled kindly, waving at her.
Ouyang Zixin walked over confidently, allowing her to hold her hand and examine her closely, maintaining a suitable smile throughout.
“How old are you?” This was Madam Bai's first time meeting her granddaughter, and she felt a bit excited, immediately asking the most difficult question to answer.
Madam Bai was unaware of the changes Ouyang Zixin underwent after entering the secret realm. Originally supposed to be just ten years old, she now appeared to be seventeen or eighteen. Her question left Bai Su in a difficult position, prompting her to say, “Mother…”
“Mother, it’s fine.” Ouyang Zixin smiled and stopped Bai Su, turning to Madam Bai and saying, “Matriarch, technically I should be ten this year, but looking at me like this, I’m afraid no one would believe I’m just ten.”
Madam Bai was taken aback by her words. Ten years old? How could that be? Ouyang Zixin clearly looked like a young lady.
“What’s going on?”
“There are some things that are really hard to explain. Just consider that I’m ten this year,” Ouyang Zixin continued to smile, as if she didn’t find anything wrong with Madam Bai’s probing questions, giving off a gentle demeanor.
Hearing this, Madam Bai understood that some matters were indeed difficult to discuss and decided not to press further. Instead, she took out something resembling a ring from her bosom and handed it to Ouyang Zixin, saying, “Take this; it’s a gift from your grandmother for our first meeting.”
Ouyang Zixin glanced at Bai Su and saw her nod slightly before accepting it. Upon looking closely, she realized it was actually a high-level spatial ring. She thought to herself that the Bai Clan was indeed wealthy. To give such an expensive high-level Mystical Artifact as a meeting gift was quite generous. Her father had been managing affairs in Exiled Nation for many years and probably couldn’t casually present something like this as a gift to juniors.
“Thank you, Matriarch.” Ouyang Zixin accepted the spatial ring. Although she might not necessarily need it, she certainly wouldn’t mind having such a valuable item.
The three of them sat in the room chatting casually, mostly with Madam Bai asking questions and Ouyang Zixin answering. Occasionally, when Ouyang Zixin found it difficult to respond, Bai Su would answer on her behalf. As they chatted, Madam Bai finally steered the conversation onto the main topic.
"Have you been injured in the Millennium Ruins?" Madam Bai had never believed that the dark red patterns on the Bright White Stone appeared because Baike was injured. So she was somewhat hopeful, hoping that Ouyang Zixin had also been hurt in the Millennium Ruins; if that were the case, then the elders would not be able to insist that Bai Clan's returning Legitimate Daughter was Baike.
Upon hearing about the injury, Bai Su became anxious and looked closely at Ouyang Zixin.
"I got a little hurt. Mother, don't worry; who doesn't get hurt while training outside?" Ouyang Zixin reassured Bai Su and then turned to Madam Bai. "Why do you ask, Matriarch?"
"Oh, it's like this. Did your mother tell you about the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan?"
Ouyang Zixin nodded.
"Since she has mentioned it, I won't hide it from you. I hope you are our Bai Clan's returning Legitimate Daughter. Even if your mother doesn't think so." Madam Bai glanced thoughtfully at Bai Su and paused before continuing, "Bai Zhan is ungrateful and disloyal; his daughter should not qualify as a Legitimate Daughter. However, since Baike herself hasn't done anything heinous, the five Elders of the Bai Clan who came with me believe she can be considered a candidate. If you can prove that you are indeed the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan, then we will soon be able to remove Bai Zhan from his position as clan leader."
Ouyang Zixin secretly laughed to herself. Baike hasn't done anything heinous? Isn't harming one's own kin enough? Back at Lingchi Peak, she had wanted to kill her.
"The Bai Clan has been in decline for too long; it's time to rise again. Now that the Alien Manifestation is known to everyone, seizing this opportunity for our Bai Clan to welcome a Legitimate Daughter is something to look forward to," Madam Bai said excitedly, her whole body trembling with enthusiasm.
"What is this Alien Manifestation?" Ouyang Zixin didn't care about how long the Bai Clan had been in decline or how they would restart; instead, she focused on those four words: "Alien Manifestation."
"It's like this: before you returned, a strange phenomenon appeared on Yuhai Continent, which is known as the legendary Alien Manifestation. It is said that this celestial event signifies that Yuhai Continent will undergo tremendous changes. I heard all this from your father, but your grandmother said that the Alien Manifestation is a sign of the return of the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan..." Bai Su felt conflicted; she didn't want to believe either of these differing accounts. If she believed the first one, her husband would join the war; if she believed the second one, her daughter would be caught in turmoil. As she thought about it, her eyes turned red again as she looked at Ouyang Zixin with deep concern.
"Mother, here we go again. We haven't even clarified things yet, and you're worrying unnecessarily." Ouyang Zixin felt a tightening in her heart but could only comfort Bai Su for now. "It's just a celestial phenomenon; let others say what they want. What does it have to do with us? We just need to live our lives well."
Perhaps Ouyang Zixin just wanted to comfort Bai Su, or maybe she genuinely wanted to say something for Madam Bai's sake. After all, in her eyes, Madam Bai was just another "other."
"Don't you believe your grandmother's words?" Madam Bai stared at Ouyang Zixin, as if daring her to nod, which would be the greatest act of disrespect.
Unfortunately, Ouyang Zixin didn't care about that. She didn't even look at Madam Bai and simply held Bai Su's hand, nodding and saying, "I really don't believe in predictions based on celestial phenomena. It's not directed at you; you don't need to overthink it."
"Why don't you believe?" Madam Bai was so agitated that she stood up, her body swaying slightly. "Why don't you believe the sayings that have been passed down in the Bai Clan for years?"
"Are you, like your mother, unwilling to take on the responsibilities of the Bai Clan?" Madam Bai's eyes shimmered with tears as her gaze flickered between the two of them. Had all these years passed without any change in her daughter's thoughts, and now her granddaughter was the same?
"Matriarch, please don't be upset. I'm just stating facts. Celestial phenomena are superstitions. If you want to use them to predict weather or disasters, I might still believe that, but predicting something like The Return of the Legitimate Daughter? Ha, I truly do not believe in that." Ouyang Zixin did not change her stance despite Madam Bai's visibly shaken demeanor; in her view, it was best to speak plainly.
