"Where is the Matriarch?" Bai Su asked, looking around the empty room and turning to Lin Ma. "Why is she still out at this hour?"
Lin Ma also looked puzzled. The Matriarch was quite old; it was unusual for her to be out at night. However, noticing that Liu Ying and Liu Lu were also missing, she thought that with those two maids accompanying her, nothing serious could have happened. She replied, "Don't worry, Madam. The Matriarch might just be unable to sleep and went for a walk. I'll ask Liu Ying and Liu Lu about it later."
Bai Su nodded. It was common for someone of her age to have trouble sleeping in a new environment. It seemed they should prepare more calming tea in the kitchen.
"Matriarch, are you really going out this late?" Liu Ying asked awkwardly, looking at Madam Bai. The last time, Madam Bai had sneaked out at night, and now it seemed she wanted to do it again. Liu Ying and Liu Lu naturally wouldn't let that happen unnoticed.
Madam Bai chuckled lightly and said, "Girl, I can't sleep and want to meet an old friend. It's nothing serious; you don't need to worry about me. Go back and rest." With that, she sidestepped Liu Ying and continued toward the door, clearly determined to go out.
Liu Lvy stepped forward to block Madam Bai's path, a faint smile on her face. "Matriarch, it's late at night; your old friends are probably resting. It would be better to wait until tomorrow morning."
This Matriarch was not simple; Liu Ying and Liu Lu had sensed that from the first day they were assigned to her. However, they had underestimated her abilities, which was why she had managed to sneak out once before. It wasn't until dawn that she returned, leaving them surprised at having guarded an empty house all night. Since then, they had been extra cautious.
Madam Bai pretended to be angry, tapping her cane on the ground with a loud thud. "I just have this little wish! Are you going to stop me?"
Liu Lvy glanced at Liu Ying, who shook her head and signaled for Liu Lvy not to be careless. They couldn't gauge the depth of Madam Bai's abilities. Right now, it seemed like she was just playing with them; if she truly wanted to go out, it would be difficult to stop her.
"Matriarch, please don’t make it hard for us," Liu Ying said with a charming smile as she stepped forward to support Madam Bai. "You see, the roads are not easy to navigate at night; if something were to happen..."
"It won't! I can see perfectly well! Just let me through; I want to meet my old friend," Madam Bai insisted, shaking off Liu Ying's hand as she tried to head outside.
"Matriarch!"
Madam Bai turned to the two maids behind her, a kind smile appearing on her wrinkled face. However, to Liu Ying and Liu Lu, that smile meant something entirely different. When they saw Matriarch turn around, they felt a surge of joy, thinking she had changed her mind. They hurried forward to assist her, but Matriarch said, "Don't be too happy just yet. I only wanted to ask if you would like to come with me."
In fact, Madam Bai hadn't intended to go alone this time either. However, the two girls had rushed in to stop her without a second thought, which had delayed her a bit. Now Matriarch thought that if she invited them along, they would likely not try to stop her again.
Liu Ying and Liu Lu had not considered this; they were only focused on preventing the elderly woman from going out alone in the middle of the night and had never thought that Matriarch would want them to accompany her. Thus, they fell into a habitual line of thinking.
Upon hearing that Matriarch wanted to take them along, they quickly agreed, thinking that this way they could finally explain things to their master and mistress.

"You two, wait for me at the door." Madam Bai stood at the entrance of Room One and said to Liu Ying and Liu Lu, "Inside are my old friends; you don't need to worry. It won't take long."
At this point, Liu Ying and Liu Lu knew it was pointless to ask for more; being able to stand at the door and wait was already quite good. They said nothing further and watched as Matriarch entered.
"Matriarch has arrived." An elderly voice sounded from within the room, followed by a series of conversations that seemed completely unconcerned about those outside.
"Is she really here to meet old friends?" Liu Lvy murmured quietly. Matriarch's sudden arrival caught them off guard; Lin Ma had previously instructed them to be cautious in all matters. Could it be that they were overthinking this time?
"Has there been another change in the imprint?" As soon as Madam Bai entered, she got straight to the point. The reason she had come so hastily today was because she sensed an anomaly with the Bright White Stone. Otherwise, if she had been better prepared, how could she have been discovered by Liu Ying and Liu Lu?
The elder stroked his graying beard and glanced towards the door. Seeing Madam Bai's expression was calm, he then said, "Indeed. Second Brother, bring it out."
Second Elder took out the Bright White Stone and placed it on the table, signaling Madam Bai to take a closer look at what the strange phenomenon might represent.
Madam Bai leaned in closer and noticed that the Bright White Stone, which was originally pure white, now had faint blood-red lines appearing on its surface. These lines seemed to be pulsating, as if there were some liquid flowing inside.
"When did you discover this?" Madam Bai asked. As she was not the current Legitimate Daughter, her perception was not very accurate. She only sensed something was amiss, which prompted her hurried visit, but it seemed she was already too late.
"I discovered it early this morning. I intended to send someone to inform you..." Second Elder, who was responsible for safeguarding the Bright White Stone, was the first to notice it. However, before he could finish speaking, Matriarch interrupted him and asked him to describe what he had seen.
Every night before bed and upon waking, Second Elder checked the Bright White Stone, and today was no exception. However, while inspecting it, he suddenly felt a slight vibration from the stone in his hand. When he focused on it, he saw those tiny lines appearing one by one. At first, there was just one line, then two, three... This continued for about the duration of a tea break, after which no new lines appeared, but those that had emerged showed no signs of disappearing.
"Gradually increasing?" Madam Bai frowned upon hearing this. The deep wrinkles on her face seemed capable of crushing a mosquito as she murmured, "It’s impossible; the Legitimate Daughter has not confirmed anything. How could this happen?"
The Five Elders exchanged glances, unsure of what Madam Bai meant by her words. However, one thing was certain: Madam Bai knew exactly what was happening with the Bright White Stone.
"Matriarch, please speak up," Elder Five urged impatiently as he noticed Madam Bai lost in her murmurs.
"The Bright White Stone is also a manifestation of the Legitimate Daughter's essence. This situation indicates that the Legitimate Daughter is injured. However... but the Bright White Stone has not recognized its master, so..." As Madam Bai shook her head, she voiced her confusion. This kind of situation had occurred before, but only after the Bright White Stone had recognized its master.
"This is bad! Could it be that my precious granddaughter has been injured in the Millennium Ruins!?" Matriarch thought to herself. The one closest to the Bright White Stone, who could possibly be returning as the Legitimate Daughter, was none other than Ouyang Zixin. She suddenly stood up, feeling dizzy and nearly fainting.
