Ouyang Zixin felt increasingly familiar with the Small Stone Box. If it weren't for the "clap clap" sound, she might have remembered what this thing resembled.
The Small Stone Box had a small lock clasp, the kind that was very classical, and hanging from the clasp was a delicate little padlock that looked somewhat like a longevity lock.
"Master, how do we open the small stone lock on this Small Stone Box?" Nameless looked around for a while; the small stone lock seemed more like a decoration, as there was no keyhole at all.
Ah, she remembered now. This was just like those small jewelry boxes she used to see at street stalls in her past life.
Ouyang Zixin suddenly clapped her hands, producing a crisp "snap." "I got it! This is just a jewelry box." Saying this, she took the Small Stone Box from Nameless's hands, lifted it to her eyes, and examined the area where the small stone lock hung for a moment. Then she grinned and raised an eyebrow at Nameless, making her intentions clear.
Showing off again!
Nameless turned her head away to avoid looking at her smug expression. Ouyang Zixin didn't mind and continued, "This thing is just a trick; it's purely decorative. The lid of the box is merely held in place by a clasp; it's not actually locked."
With that, she reached out to open the Small Stone Box. She had seen too many of these jewelry boxes in her past life. Initially, she had thought that the lock on top required a key to open, and her colleagues had laughed at her for it.
"Click."
Sure enough, Ouyang Zixin pressed the small clasp inward slightly and heard the sound of the Small Stone Box opening. However, she didn't immediately lift the lid. She was unsure if there was some mechanism inside since it had made a noise earlier.
"Hey, Yun..." Ouyang Zixin looked up in the direction where Yun Tianmo had been, wanting to call him over to take a look. But now there was no sign of him.
He must have found the exit...
Following Ouyang Zixin's gaze, Nameless noticed that Yun Tianmo was gone. Looking around the entire Underground Palace, there was still no trace of him. It seemed he really had found a way out.
"Master..." Nameless didn't know what to say at this moment, perhaps to comfort Ouyang Zixin. It seemed there was no reason to comfort, and the conversation couldn't continue.
"Well, let's not worry about that. Let's see what's inside this Small Stone Box." Ouyang Zixin quickly recovered, as if the earlier disappointment had never happened. "You prepare the Barrier. If anything flies out when I open it, safety first, no matter what."
Ready, three, two, one!
Ouyang Zixin silently counted down in his mind and then swiftly lifted the lid of the Small Stone Box, squinting one eye to see what changes might occur.
"Master, nothing flew out." Nameless observed Ouyang Zixin extending his arm straight while leaning back, tilting his head to one side. The posture looked quite awkward.
The Small Stone Box was opened, revealing an empty interior. There was nothing inside, but the inside of the Small Stone Box was engraved with many exquisite patterns that dazzled the eyes at first glance.
"Look at the patterns; it seems like..." Ouyang Zixin leaned in closer to see clearly what patterns were carved inside the Small Stone Box, some of which looked somewhat familiar. "Are these the designs from the totems on the stone pillars?"
In this Underground Palace, they first discovered the Taiji Bagua Diagram, followed by those totemic stone pillars. Now they had found a Small Stone Box, smooth on the outside and intricately carved with all the totem patterns inside. What meticulous craftsmanship this must have been.
Even if this item wasn't some kind of Mysterious Energy, it could still be considered an antique; it might fetch a good price if sold.
"Master..."
Ouyang Zixin's thoughts were sensed by Nameless, who smiled shyly and said, "Is it wrong to just think about it casually?"
Next, the master and servant held the Small Stone Box and circled around the eight stone pillars several times. After careful comparison, they confirmed that these were indeed the same totems. But why would someone gather all these totems together? If the totems represented a certain spiritual belief or worship, they would be separate; it was unheard of for someone to simultaneously believe in multiple totems.
"Thud."
The Mirror Guardian made a sound as Ouyang Zixin and Nameless circled the totem for the third time. She returned the Small Stone Box to Nameless and pulled the Mirror Guardian from her sleeve, wondering what kind of person she would see this time. Would it be Yun Tianmo?
With that thought, her movements quickened as she spread her palm to lay the Mirror Guardian flat, leaning in eagerly to see what would be displayed.
"Why is there still no image?" Ouyang Zixin maintained the same position for almost half a stick of incense, but the Mirror Guardian showed no signs of life. She began to doubt whether it was broken.
"Thud."
The lid of the Small Stone Box closed with a loud sound as Nameless momentarily lost focus. The noise startled Ouyang Zixin, who turned around and shot an annoyed glare at Nameless, complaining about his carelessness.
As she prepared to turn back to the Mirror Guardian, her gaze swept over the Small Stone Box. The carved totem inside flashed in her mind, and a sudden insight struck her. Ouyang Zixin smiled and said, "I see now."
If this Small Stone Box resembled a jewelry box from her past life, even down to the decorative lock that functioned like a clasp, then it was missing one essential item—a mirror.
Almost every jewelry box has a small mirror embedded in its lid, whether for convenience in wearing jewelry or simply for decoration. Because this Small Stone Box had so many intricate carvings, Ouyang Zixin had momentarily overlooked its lack of a mirror.
"You open it," Ouyang Zixin said, tilting her chin slightly to indicate that Nameless should lift the lid again. She wanted to confirm her thoughts.
Nameless complied and opened the Small Stone Box. Ouyang Zixin asked him to turn it around so she could see if the patterns inside the lid matched her memory.
The lid of the Small Stone Box was also adorned with numerous patterns, albeit in smaller versions. These designs appeared compact but were actually arranged systematically; they surrounded an empty circular space that was just the right size for the Mirror Guardian in Ouyang Zixin's hand. (To be continued.)
