“Zhang Qiu!”
Zhang Qiu clearly felt the gun move away from his temple, and upon hearing the other person's voice, all his tension dissipated. Just a moment ago, he was contemplating how to escape from the gunpoint and save Jiang Xue, but now it seemed that everything would be fine.
“Wang…” Zhang Qiu momentarily didn't know how to address him; he wasn't sure of the title, and calling him by name didn't feel right. Zhang Qiu quickly sifted through several titles in his mind and ultimately settled on one that couldn't possibly be wrong, “Officer Wang, did my uncle send you?”
Wang Hailong made a shushing gesture and whispered, “When we set out, Director He didn’t know.”
“Then who are you?” Zhang Qiu asked with some confusion. “Isn’t Captain Ma in charge of rescuing Jiang Xue?”
“The comrades from the police station only did a preliminary investigation. For a case like this involving kidnapping, it’s our Criminal Investigation Team that is responsible.” Wang Hailong explained succinctly while surveying the outside again, simultaneously holding Zhang Qiu's shoulder to prevent him from making any rash moves. A few moments ago, their investigating comrades had clearly overheard that the real big fish would only bite at night; for this reason, the investigating comrades even pretended to have encountered a ghost.
Zhang Qiu followed Wang Hailong's gaze outside as the crowd gathered suddenly dispersed but didn’t move far away. In the darkness, it was hard to see clearly, but Zhang Qiu heard a familiar voice once again: “Have you thought it over? You might as well serve me well; if you do well for me, it will be good for you too. Only a fool wouldn’t agree.”
Zhang Qiu was startled; that voice belonged to Lu Bin! Just as he was about to inform Wang Hailong about the new development, he hesitated and closed his mouth again. The incident involving Principal Wu Wu Deyu was fresh in his mind, and Zhang Qiu worried that the police might also be wary of the big son of a leading enterprise in the city.
With a lewd grin, Lu Bin reached for his waist to unbuckle his belt. With a loud clang, the copper-headed leather belt fell to the ground. Looking at Jiang Xue trembling in the corner, the more she shook, the more excited Lu Bin became. He chuckled and said, “Come on, don’t be foolish.”
“You're the fool!” Zhang Qiu suddenly dashed out, taking just a few steps to reach the center. Using the flickering candlelight as cover, he accurately smashed the brick in his hand onto Lu Bin's head. Hearing Zhang Qiu's voice, Jiang Xue shouted from the corner, “Zhang Qiu! I'm here!”
With an exclamation of surprise upon seeing Zhang Qiu, Lu Bin covered his head and yelled, “Catch him! Each of you gets an extra three thousand!”
Without needing Lu Bin to say more, over a dozen of Liu Xiaolong's men had already surrounded Zhang Qiu. Upon hearing about the extra money from Lu Bin, their eyes lit up as they focused on their prey—Zhang Qiu, who could bring them substantial rewards.
“Go!”
Initially intending to wait for a better opportunity, Wang Hailong was caught off guard when Zhang Qiu couldn’t hold back and rushed out. Given the circumstances, he had no choice but to give orders. Immediately, uniformed officers and plainclothes detectives leaped out with their guns drawn, shouting, “Don’t move! Police!”
Everyone present was momentarily stunned, and the excitement of the Brothers instantly deflated. Lu Bin, frightened, leaned against the wall. Liu Xiaolong recognized Wang Hailong's appearance and realized he had fallen into a trap. With a flash of inspiration, he shouted, "Put out the candles!"
The Brothers holding candles cheered silently in their hearts upon hearing Liu Xiaolong's words, and in an instant, the entire second floor merged back into darkness. However, after just a second or two, the Public Security Officers produced powerful flashlights that illuminated the Shell Apartment as if it were broad daylight.
Liu Xiaolong immediately made a run for it, jumping down the stairs toward the first floor. Just as a Police Officer was about to chase him, he saw Liu Xiaolong step back up the stairs. The Public Security Officers were puzzled; how could a criminal run back? Then they noticed a dark crowd coming up from the first-floor stairs, all wielding iron pipes, with one person at the front holding a machete.
The Public Security Officers quickly raised their guns and shouted, "Don't move!"
Yang Yu was also taken aback upon hearing the voice. Looking over, he saw the dark muzzle of a gun pointed at him, and his body hair stood on end. Why were there police here?
"Friends," Qiu Sheng Zhang worried about accidental fire harming the Brothers and quickly said to Wang Hailong, "They're all friends of mine. They know my girlfriend was kidnapped and came to help rescue her."
"Have them put away their weapons; they're all decent citizens. What’s with these sticks? We still need to rely on the Public Security Bureau for anything serious."
"Yes, yes, rely on the Public Security Bureau."
Wang Hailong waved his hand, and the officer aiming at Yang Yu lowered his gun.
Seeing that things were safe, Zhang Qiu rushed into the bathroom and saw Jiang Xue curled up in a corner. He rushed over and tore at the ropes binding her. Tears streamed down Jiang Xue's pale cheeks as she cried out, "Zhang Qiu, I knew you would come to save me! Wuwuwu..."
Zhang Qiu held Jiang Xue in his arms and comforted her by stroking her back, saying, "It's okay now; it's okay."
Suddenly, there was a commotion outside; footsteps became chaotic until gunshots rang out, bringing silence once more. Zhang Qiu was startled and rushed outside with Jiang Xue in his arms. Seeing that none of his brothers were injured eased his mind as he hurriedly asked, "What happened?"
Wang Hailong approached and said, "Fatty jumped off the building to escape; two others ran off with him."
Zhang Qiu nodded and pointed at Liu Xiaolong, saying, "He is one of the masterminds, so keep a close watch on him. Also, I know Fatty's identity."
"Who is it?"
"The eldest son of Shijinhao Group, Lu Bin." Now, Zhang Qiu could reveal Lu Bin's identity. "You all should go catch him quickly; don't let him escape."
Wang Hailong nodded slightly. "Our people are already pursuing him. This guy is driving a sports car; it seems hard to catch up." He then waved his hand to give orders to the other Public Security Officers. "Take everyone back and keep a strict watch; not a single person can escape!"
"Understood!" A chorus of responses followed as the Public Security Officers handcuffed Liu Xiaolong and his accomplices. Their guns had been replaced with rubber batons and stun guns, non-lethal weapons, as they escorted them downstairs with utmost vigilance. Just moments ago, three people had escaped right under their noses, which was a huge embarrassment for them.
Yang Yu and the others stepped back down to clear the passageway. Once everyone was escorted down, they came up to the second floor and stood in front of Zhang Qiu. "Brother Qiu, we have arrived."
"Big brother, Sister Zhang." More than thirty brothers bowed together, creating a striking scene. Zhang Qiu noticed that some of them were wrapped in bandages, clearly injured from earlier that day. Zhang Qiu bit his lower lip and sighed deeply before speaking loudly, "Thank you, Brothers. It is my fortune in this life to be brothers with you."
"Wang Hailong," who was still standing aside, disapproved of this display. "I heard you got involved in a case; running away only adds to your crimes. Now that Jiang Xue has been rescued, you should know what to do next."
"I know; I will head back to the hospital now."
"And your friends? Do I need to remind you?"
"No need; I understand."
"Then I'll take my leave. Jiang Xue has just been rescued and is emotionally unstable; stay with her for a while. Tomorrow, let her come to the station for a statement."
With that, Wang Hailong left. Zhang Qiu was well aware of his friends' identities, but some things didn't need to be said explicitly; everyone was smart enough to know what needed to be done. It was just unfortunate for his old boss Director He; Zhang Qiu always seemed to bring him trouble.
Yang Yu looked at Zhang Qiu and asked, "Brother Qiu, what should we do?"
Before Zhang Qiu could respond, Jiang Xue asked first, "What did that police officer mean? What happened to you?"
"Yang Yu, you take the brothers back. Just make sure everything is fine. It doesn't matter if business is good or not, just keep an eye on things and don't let any trouble happen."
"Don't worry, Brother Qiu, I've got this."
Zhang Qiu nodded, "Let's go. Leave me a car."
"Then I'm off. Sister-in-law, I'm leaving." Yang Yu tossed the keys to Zhang Qiu, took one last look at him, and left with the brothers. As Zhang Qiu listened to the sound of motorcycles fading away outside, he turned to Jiang Xue and asked, "Are you hungry?"
Jiang Xue nodded and then asked, "You still haven't told me what the police officer meant."
"Let's talk while we walk." Zhang Qiu led Jiang Xue away from that terrifying place. A Black Yamaha Motorcycle was parked downstairs. Zhang Qiu helped Jiang Xue put on a helmet and sped down a deserted road.
At the KFC near the county hospital, Zhang Qiu calmed Jiang Xue down and ordered a large spread of food. At this hour, only KFC was open.
Jiang Xue looked at the tray of food Zhang Qiu brought over and exclaimed, "So much! I can't eat all of this."
Zhang Qiu laughed and said, "There’s more that hasn’t been made yet. Eat up; you’ve missed two meals and need to make up for it."
"You should eat too." Jiang Xue handed a chicken wing to Zhang Qiu's mouth. He took it and ate alongside her, then said, "Xue'er, I need to go to the hospital later and stay there. After we finish eating, I'll take you home."
"No way! I'm going to the hospital with you. Are you hurt?"
Zhang Qiu nodded and said, "You should go home and rest. You have class tomorrow."
"I'm not going!" Jiang Xue stubbornly shook her head. Looking at the ill-fitting clothes on Zhang Qiu, she suddenly realized something was wrong and almost collapsed onto him, anxiously saying, "You're seriously injured, aren't you?"
Zhang Qiu pushed her back into her seat, picked up a hamburger, and handed it to her, smiling, "I'm fine, really. There's no need to worry. It's just some knife wounds; there are quite a few, but nothing serious."
"Back to the hospital!" Jiang Xue insisted, pulling Zhang Qiu to leave. Zhang Qiu hurriedly said, "Even if you want to go, you need to fill your stomach first."
"Pack it up; we'll eat at the hospital. I can't trust you out here. What if it affects your wounds? You just need the police to come save me; why are you here?"
Jiang Xue complained with concern, and Zhang Qiu hugged her tightly, laughing, "My woman needs me to save her myself. If you feel guilty about it, then reward me."
"How can I reward you when you're hurt?"
Zhang Qiu looked at Jiang Xue's gradually reddening face and teased, "Are you thinking too much? I just want you to kiss me."
"Hmph!" Jiang Xue pouted and kissed Zhang Qiu deeply.
