Chapter One Hundred and Eighty-Two: Stuck in the Pit
Zhang Qiu curiously observed Zhao Pingchuan. He had always thought Zhao was quite imaginative, but he never expected him to have such skills. This was impressive. He asked, "Where did you learn all this?"
Zhao Pingchuan chuckled, "My grandfather taught me all of this. When I was young, I would spend my winter and summer vacations at my grandparents' house. Back then, there was no television, so I would read a few books from my grandfather. Whenever I came across unfamiliar characters, I would ask him to explain them to me. All these skills were taught to me by my grandfather during that time."
"Can I visit your grandfather?" Zhang Qiu suddenly became interested in the grandfather Zhao Pingchuan mentioned. If he was like Zhao, he must be quite a remarkable person.
Gao Zhi was also filled with curiosity and chimed in, "I want to visit too."
Zhao Pingchuan replied with a smile, "Sure, but it's not close. It's in Nanlan County, and we’ll have to take a bus there. Plus, it’s in a mountainous area; can you handle that?"
Zhang Qiu laughed, "I grew up in a village; what’s there to be uncomfortable about? Let’s go."
Gao Zhi added, "I’ll go too."
"Great! Let’s plan for May Day then. I need to go back and see my grandparents anyway, so I’ll take you both along."
"Sounds good."
The three chatted as they made their way to the restroom. Except for Gao Zhi, who genuinely needed to go, Zhang Qiu and Zhao Pingchuan decided not to enter. Gao Zhi looked at the two and said, "Since we’re here, let’s all go in together."
"Just go by yourself; it’s not a pleasant place. I’m not going in there to smell it."
Neither Zhang Qiu nor Zhao Pingchuan went in, so Gao Zhi had no choice but to head into the restroom alone. Across from the restroom was the cafeteria, and on the north side of the cafeteria stood the Technology Building, with the Information Classroom located on the fourth floor. Below was a stone-brick pavilion covered in climbing green plants that bloomed with purple flowers whose names Zhang Qiu did not know. The pavilion's seating was already worn and faded, but it provided excellent shade from the sun.
Zhang Qiu and Zhao Pingchuan stood under a patch of greenery where a breeze blew gently, carrying with it the fragrance of flowers. Passersby recognized Zhang Qiu and approached him to greet him: "Brother Qiu! Brother Qiu! Boss..."
Zhang Qiu responded with smiles and then asked Zhao Pingchuan, "You can read fortunes; can you also tell about Feng Shui?"
Zhao Pingchuan shook his head, "I can't do that."
"Oh? I thought you knew about feng shui too."
"My grandfather knows how to, and he wanted to teach me, but I was too scared of these things when I was younger. As I grew older, I didn't want to learn anymore; there are so many fun things to do, right?"
"Yeah, there are indeed a lot of fun things." For some reason, Zhang Qiu thought of the time in the bar when Zhao Pingchuan was hugging the princess.
"Brother Qiu, what are you laughing at?"
"Ah, nothing, just a little laugh." Zhang Qiu awkwardly smiled, coming back to his senses. He pointed at the nearby Technology Building and said, "Have you been to the Information Classroom on the fourth floor?"
"Of course! Our school only has an Information Classroom here. Why do you ask about that, Brother Qiu?" Zhao Pingchuan found it strange that Zhang Qiu suddenly brought up the Information Classroom. They hadn't had an information class in two years; it was only during their first year that they had it.
"I heard someone say that a girl from previous years jumped down from the external stairs on the fourth floor and died. That's why I asked if you know about feng shui." Zhang Qiu couldn't help but look towards the platform of the external stairs on the fourth floor, and for a moment, he seemed to see a white shadow there. When he rubbed his eyes and looked again, there was nothing.
"That's so high; she must have died from that fall." Zhao Pingchuan sighed as he looked at the external stairs.
Zhang Qiu saw Zhao Pingchuan also looking at the fourth floor and quickly asked, "Did you just see a white shadow standing on the platform of the external stairs?"
"No, Brother Qiu, don't joke with me. I'm really scared of ghosts and monsters." Zhao Pingchuan stared at Zhang Qiu with a puzzled expression.
Seeing Zhao Pingchuan like this, Zhang Qiu said, "Maybe I saw it wrong; after all, someone might be going to the information class."
"Then you must have seen it wrong." Zhao Pingchuan agreed. But Zhang Qiu clearly saw it; it was definitely a white shadow—there was no mistake. And at Beiluan High School, no one would wear a skirt to class!
As Zhang Qiu was lost in thought, he suddenly heard loud noises coming from the restroom. Listening closely, he could even hear Gao Zhi's voice. Zhang Qiu quickly looked at Zhao Pingchuan. "Brother Qiu, it's Gao Zhi," Zhao Pingchuan said seriously as he stared at Zhang Qiu.
"Go!" Qiu Wan ran towards the men's restroom, with Zhao Pingchuan closely following.
The men's restroom was divided into two sections, but there was only one door for entry and exit. Zhang Qiu stepped up the stairs and barged in. The restroom was dimly lit, with a pungent smell mixed with cigarette smoke. Only a few people were using the outer section, while loud noises came from the inner section, which was crowded with people.
"Make way!" Zhang Qiu shouted, but his voice had no effect on the noisy crowd. He pushed through the nearby people, forcing his way inside. Those who recognized Zhang Qiu quickly stepped aside. When Zhang Qiu reached the front, Zhao Pingchuan was still trapped in the throng.
Zhang Qiu spotted Gao Zhi standing against the wall, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. Three other students stood beside him, all of them injured. Zhang Qiu recognized two of them as members of his club whom he had seen during the Ancient City Battle. He couldn't help but admire how reliable these brothers were.
Opposite Gao Zhi stood a hefty Fatty, smoking a cigarette with a long string of beads hanging around his neck. Beside him were several students wearing school uniform pants but not the tops; Zhang Qiu recognized them as first-year students.
Seeing Zhang Qiu enter, Gao Zhi lowered his head and walked over, awkwardly scratching the back of his head and grinning, "Brother Qiu, I'm sorry for embarrassing you; I couldn't take down this Fatty."
"Boss," two of Gao Zhi's companions greeted him. They had heard the commotion while urinating and rushed over upon realizing it was their brother in trouble. Unfortunately, they were outnumbered and could only take hits. Now that Zhang Qiu had arrived, their spirits lifted; they had witnessed Zhang Qiu's skills before and felt confident as long as he was present.
"Good job," Zhang Qiu encouraged them while sizing up the Fatty who was several sizes larger than Gao Zhi. He sighed, "It's not your fault for losing; he's just too fat—bigger than a sow! A punch would probably bounce right back."
The restroom was cramped, and with Zhang Qiu's sudden appearance, the previously lively atmosphere fell silent. Every word from Zhang Qiu reached Fatty's ears clearly. Fatty immediately became furious, pointing at Zhang Qiu and cursing, "Who the hell are you? You dare insult me? I'll throw you into the pit!"
Zhang Qiu looked at Fatty and regretted not having his playing cards from that night; otherwise, he could have easily dealt with Fatty's arrogant finger. Sighing, Zhang Qiu shook his head and charged forward suddenly. There was a scream as Fatty's index finger bent at an odd angle backward, causing him to fall onto the filthy ground. Wearing only thin beach shorts in summer, he ended up soaked in urine from countless others.
"It hurts! It hurts! It hurts!" Fatty cried out, momentarily forgetting about his backside as waves of pain shot through his finger. Beads of sweat streamed down his forehead. The first-year students beside Fatty stared in shock. Wow, this guy didn't even talk before attacking—unlike that senior fatty who had argued first!
"Apologize to my brother," Zhang Qiu said while still applying pressure on Fatty's finger, completely disregarding the first-year students around him. To Zhang Qiu, they posed no threat whatsoever.
"I'll fuck your mother!" Fatty shouted angrily and lunged forward. Zhang Qiu dodged to the side and used Fatty's momentum to pull him aside; Fatty ended up heading straight towards the latrine.
Zhang Qiu surveyed the area and looked at the first-year students. "Who among you threw punches? Step forward; everyone else get lost."
Several First Year students looked at each other, their eyes revealing unmasked fear. Just then, angry shouts came from outside the restroom: "What are you all doing? What’s going on?"
The Security Chief arrived suddenly with several guards, causing the onlooking students to scatter like birds and beasts. The Red-Faced Guard shouted loudly, "No one is allowed to leave! No one is allowed to leave!"
Seeing this, Zhang Qiu quickly pulled Gao Zhi and said, "Let’s go."
Gao Zhi understood and followed Zhang Qiu, blending into the chaotic crowd. Zhang Qiu also grabbed two Club Brothers who were standing still, and together they rushed out of the restroom. The Red-Faced Guard spotted Zhang Qiu in the crowd and was about to shout a warning when he suddenly remembered something and quickly shut his mouth. The Security Chief also noticed Zhang Qiu in the crowd and had a vague feeling that this matter was related to him. However, deep down, the Security Chief hoped that this incident had nothing to do with Zhang Qiu.
As soon as the students exited the restroom, the space opened up instantly, with dozens of people rushing in all directions—First Years returning to their groups, Sophomores heading back to theirs, and seniors going their own way. The guards wanted to chase but lacked sufficient manpower; moreover, many of those present were truly unrelated to the incident.
Once the students dispersed, the Security Chief walked in with a grim expression. He saw several First Year students still frozen in place and pointed at them angrily, saying, "What are you doing here? No one is allowed to leave! Come over and register your names; this is absolutely unacceptable!"
The Security Chief then noticed a hefty figure crouched by the latrine pit, covering his nose and looking somewhat confused as he approached. "Get up, get up," he said.
"I can’t! My head is stuck! Ugh!" Fatty exclaimed, and as he spoke, a foul odor rushed into his lungs, causing him to vomit again.
The Security Chief thought to himself how familiar that voice sounded. Connecting it with the plump body before him, his expression changed instantly—his face turned cold but also showed a hint of concern as he hesitantly asked, "Lu Bin?"
