Chapter 165: Meeting the In-Laws in the Director's Office
"Thank you for saving Jiang Xue," Second Uncle said excitedly as he shook Zhang Zhi Hua's hand. He instinctively believed that it was Zhang Qiu's uncle, Police Chief Wang Guodong, who had helped Jiang Xue to come out safely.
Zhang Zhi Hua warmly held Second Uncle's hand and repeatedly said, "It was nothing, it was nothing." At this moment, he certainly would not deny his assistance to Jiang Xue.
Director Zhao watched as Zhang Zhi Hua and Second Uncle became like in-laws in the Director's Office, feeling both amused and helpless. He quickly brought everyone back to the main topic: "Now that both parents are here, the reason for your visit today is..." Director Zhao hesitated. He originally wanted to ask Second Uncle if he knew about Jiang Xue's relationship and what his thoughts were on it, but since they were already calling each other in-laws, what attitude could there be? Director Zhao suddenly found himself at a loss for words.
"What is it..." Second Uncle stared blankly at Director Zhao, suddenly feeling anxious. He asked, "Director, Jiang Xue hasn't done anything wrong, has she? This child has had a hard time; I hope you can go easy on her..."
"Not at all; this child hasn't done anything wrong," Director Zhao quickly reassured him upon seeing Second Uncle nearly in tears. Then he realized he had made a mistake—if she hadn't done anything wrong, why would he have called the parents over?
"That's good to hear, that's good to hear." Second Uncle returned to his usual self, standing quietly to the side while rubbing his hands and occasionally glancing at the director.
Director Zhao exchanged glances with Zhao Guohong before finally speaking up: "With the college entrance exams approaching, I've checked Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue's grades. Their studies are not bad and there is still plenty of room for improvement. I hope both parents can encourage the children to study diligently and focus their efforts in the right direction."
Zhang Qiu looked at Director Zhao in surprise, thinking, "Could it be that I'm not being punished?"
"Good, good," both Zhang Zhi Hua and Second Uncle agreed with Director Zhao. Director Zhao then turned to Zhang Qiu and said, "Zhang Qiu, the school has been very accommodating towards you this time; you should remember their kindness."
"Of course," Zhang Qiu replied with a smile, though what he promised had already gone in one ear and out the other.
Director Zhao cheerfully said, "Then you two parents can head back now. Zhang Qiu, Jiang Xue, you two should return to class as well."
Hearing Director Zhao's decision, Zhao Guohong remained silent. Deep down, he was angry and wished for Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue to reflect on their actions for daring to openly date without considering him as their homeroom teacher! However, on another note, Zhao Guohong also felt sympathy for the two kids. Well, let them date; after all, graduation was just around the corner. Whatever will be will be; he decided to be more open-minded this time. With this thought in mind, he felt much better and bid farewell to Director Zhao before leaving; there were still many tasks waiting for him in the office.
Zhang Zhi Hua and Second Uncle exchanged a few more pleasantries with Director Zhao, assuring him they would encourage their children to study hard. In the hallway, Zhang Zhi Hua insisted that Second Uncle stay for dinner that evening. Second Uncle hurriedly waved his hand and said, "No, no, I need to head back now."
"No way," Zhang Zhi Hua grabbed Second Uncle's arm. "You have to eat before going back."
Seeing that Second Uncle was still hesitant, Zhang Qiu stepped in first: "Second Uncle, even if we're celebrating Jiang Xue's release, I just picked her up at noon. She deserves to have something good to eat, doesn't she?"
Second Uncle hesitated for a while before finally deciding, "Alright, let's celebrate then."
With Second Uncle's agreement, Zhang Zhi Hua, Zhang Qiu, and Jiang Xue all smiled. Zhang Zhi Hua added, "Let's invite Auntie over too, so we can all gather in the evening."
"Okay, okay," Second Uncle chuckled warmly.
However, Zhang Qiu felt less than pleased. A good gathering would be fine with just Second Uncle; why did they have to invite the annoying Auntie? Once Auntie arrived, the pleasant atmosphere would surely be ruined. Zhang Zhi Hua had his own thoughts; no matter how unpleasant Auntie was, she was still the children's aunt. It wouldn't seem right to invite Second Uncle without inviting Auntie. Moreover, it was better to resolve conflicts than to deepen them. After Zhang Qiu married Jiang Xue, they would inevitably have more interactions with Second Uncle's family, and Auntie was an unavoidable hurdle. Little did Zhang Qiu know that even before he and Jiang Xue took their college entrance exams, Zhang Zhi Hua had already started considering their marriage.
Zhang Zhi Hua took Second Uncle home first while Zhang Qiu returned to the classroom with Jiang Xue. Meanwhile, in the Director's Office, the Security Chief remained in Director Zhao's office.
"Director Zhao, who exactly is this Jiang Xue?" The Security Chief had been puzzled; everyone kept mentioning her release—where had she come from?
Director Zhao countered, "Do you remember the girl Principal Wu mentioned during our meeting? That's her."
The Security Chief was shocked: "The one who stabbed someone?"
"Yes."
"Then what about this Zhang Qiu? What's his background?"
"He's someone who can change the county's decision and rescue Jiang Xue. What do you think his background is?" Director Zhao replied, almost as if talking to himself.
"But won't this encourage the students' arrogance? They might start disregarding school rules," the Security Chief expressed concern. If students weren't afraid of them anymore, future work would become difficult.
Director Zhao chuckled lightly: "Zhang Qiu is a smart student; he knows which matters should be publicized and which should be kept low-key." He looked into the Security Chief's eyes and asked, "What do you want to do about him otherwise?"
"Not much, not much." The Security Chief smiled bitterly, thinking about how he could do anything; he might as well just stick to his job.
As soon as the Security Chief returned to the guard room, the guards swarmed over to inquire. The Red-Faced Guard was particularly enthusiastic, holding out a cup of water to the Security Chief and respectfully saying, "Section Chief, have some water. What happened with that student?"
The Security Chief kept a stern face and did not take the cup offered by the Red-Faced Guard. He gloomily replied, "Nothing happened."
"Nothing happened!" The Red-Faced Guard's eyes widened in disbelief. "How can nothing happen? Isn't Director Zhao usually very strict with students? This shouldn't be the case; it's early romance we're talking about!" The Red-Faced Guard shouted, unable to believe that the school, which had zero tolerance for early romance, would let Zhang Qiu go just like that. Is this really the same school he knew?
The Security Chief looked at the Red-Faced Guard with disdain. "Nothing happened is exactly right. If something had happened, you and I would both be in trouble."
The Red-Faced Guard still didn't understand the seriousness of the situation and pressed on, "Why would we be in trouble?"
The Security Chief grew impatient and snapped, "Do you know who that girl is? She's the one who stabbed someone at our school, and now she's back!"
The Red-Faced Guard stared at the Security Chief's grim face, repeatedly recalling what had just been said in his mind. Shouldn't someone who stabbed another person be arrested? How could she still come back to school?
The Security Chief continued, "And do you know who that boy is? His uncle is our Director of the Beilan County Public Security Bureau!"
