Chapter One Hundred Fifty-Five: This is Our New Home
He Jun finished dealing with the group of police officers and turned back to look at Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue, smiling, "Zhang Qiu, shall we go? Are you two coming back to the police station with me or going somewhere else?"
"Uncle, we won't go to the police station. We haven't seen each other for so long; we should have some time alone together," Qiu Wan replied with a smile. He Jun also smiled, and soon everyone was laughing together.
"Sister Lan, thank you for taking care of Jiang Xue," Zhang Qiu sincerely expressed his gratitude to Lan Ningshan.
Lan Ningshan smiled slightly, "I treat her like a sister, and coincidentally, you are my brother. We really are fated to meet."
"So you're Zhang Qiu's sister. No wonder I feel such an inexplicable sense of familiarity with you. Thank you so much for everything during this time," Jiang Xue also thanked Lan Ningshan. Although she was reluctant to speak much or socialize, she understood who treated her well in her heart.
"Sister Lan, then we'll head back. After a few days, Jiang Xue and I will come to visit you," Zhang Qiu said.
"Great! I'll be waiting for you," Lan Ningshan replied with a sweet smile.
Ma Zhen, Lan Ningshan, Liu Hua, and others surrounded He Jun as they walked out of the police station, watching them leave.
"Shan Shan, you..."
"Stop!" Lan Ningshan shot him a glare and said angrily, "No calling me that! At work, refer to positions or call me by my name; even Ning Shan is fine."
"Okay, okay, I’ll listen to you," Liu Hua said with a wronged expression but then muttered under his breath, "But he can call me that; why can't I?"
This remark reached Lan Ningshan's ears. She paused just as she was about to step forward and turned back to glare at Liu Hua. Feeling a chill run down his spine, Liu Hua hurriedly ran away.
Ma Zhen laughed at the scene and walked over, saying, "Alright, alright, let’s get back to work. I’ll have a word with them later. It's outrageous that they would have their eyes on our police flower."
"Who do you think is more attractive, Jiang Xue or me?" Lan Ningshan suddenly asked out of nowhere.
"Ah?" Ma Zhen did not understand.
"It's nothing." Lan Ningshan covered it up and quickly left. Ma Zhen didn't think much of it; he needed to hurry and find the Director to implement Director He's orders, making sure to replace the Grassroots Police Officer's hats with ones more suitable for the summer environment.
...
Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue held hands, hugging a Teddy Bear, walking side by side with He Jun on the brick road outside the police station. The fence was covered with Virginia Creeper vines, lush and green. As the wind blew, it swayed like a string of wind chimes. Zhang Qiu was lost in thought when He Jun suddenly said, "Jiang Xue, Xue'er, right?"
"Yes." Jiang Xue nodded. Although it wasn't her first time meeting He Jun, she still felt a bit shy in front of him.
"If Zhang Qiu bullies you, just come find your uncle. I will definitely help you deal with him," He Jun said as he took out a business card and handed it to Jiang Xue.
Jiang Xue instinctively accepted it and said, "Thank you, Uncle. I trust Zhang Qiu; that won't happen."
Jiang Xue smiled happily, and Zhang Qiu also smiled, saying to He Jun, "Uncle, don't worry; that really won't happen."
After picking up the Electric Vehicle at the police station entrance, Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue bid farewell to He Jun. He Jun smiled and reminded them, "Ride slowly on the way back; don't get too excited just because you met."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu replied with a smile. "By the way, Uncle, next time we go to Grandma's house for dinner, I'll bring Jiang Xue along."
"Great! I'll talk to your grandma and make sure we gather soon," He Jun said cheerfully.
Jiang Xue's face turned red as she tightly grasped Zhang Qiu's shirt.
On the way back, Zhang Qiu asked Jiang Xue, "You must have felt stifled staying inside; where do you want to go? I'll take you."
"As long as you're with me, I can go anywhere. I never want to leave you again." Jiang Xue hugged Zhang Qiu from behind and gently leaned her head against his back comfortably.
Zhang Qiu held onto the handlebars with one hand while reaching for Jiang Xue's hand with the other.
"Let's go home first. Mom and Dad don't know about this news yet. They will be so happy to see you."
"Okay."
Zhang Qiu's new home is in the South District of Beilan County Town, further south than the Old County Hospital, just a street away from Beilan County Third Middle School. This area consists of large villages, and due to its proximity to the urban area, it has complete infrastructure. Aside from the houses being a bit run-down, it has running water, heating, and everything else one might need. There's also an Agricultural Trade Market nearby. It's close to the Public Security Bureau, just a ten-minute walk, and Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue arrived quickly.
Jiang Xue curiously looked around this unfamiliar place that Zhang Qiu brought her to and asked, "Aren't we going to your house? Where is this?"
"This is our home," Zhang Qiu said with a wry smile. "The two-story building over there has already signed the demolition agreement and moved out. This is a new rental. Come on, let me show you our new home."
Jiang Xue felt a pang of loss; just before entering, she and Zhang Qiu had been sleeping together in that two-story building. In such a short time, the house that witnessed their love no longer existed. Sighing at the unpredictability of life, Jiang Xue quickly followed Zhang Qiu into the yard.
As soon as they entered, Zhang Qiu's Big Yellow Dog enthusiastically wagged its tail and came over. Zhang Qiu reached out to gently pat the dog's head, and the Big Yellow Dog happily rolled over on the ground. Jiang Xue laughed and said, "Big Yellow is still so enthusiastic."
Zhang Qiu smiled back, "How could it not be enthusiastic when the lady of the house is here?" He took Jiang Xue's hand and walked into the house.
It was a three-room layout with a central hall and bedrooms on either side; Zhang Qiu lived in the left room. The furniture was all moved from the two-story building, making the space feel a bit cramped. There was also an annex in the yard that Zhang Zhi Hua had converted into a bathroom and toilet, installing a water heater and solar panels.
Upon entering the house, Zhang Qiu saw Zhang Zhi Hua leaning on the sofa with the TV on, already asleep. On the floor was a square table with dishes of braised eggplant and stir-fried cauliflower; steam was rising from a pot of spinach soup.
Zhang Qiu gently shook Zhang Zhi Hua awake and called out, "Dad, I'm back."
"Uh..." Zhang Zhi Hua rubbed his eyes, suddenly sitting up straight and vigorously rubbing his eyes again. He looked incredulously at Jiang Xue standing in front of him and asked, "Is it really you, Jiang Xue?"
Jiang Xue felt no hesitation upon seeing Zhang Zhi Hua; she walked up to him, waved her arm, and smiled, "Uncle, you’re not mistaken. It’s me; I’m back."
"Good, good! It’s great that you’re back! Come with me; what’s going on?" Zhang Zhi Hua was overjoyed to see Jiang Xue.
"Dad, actually we don’t really know what’s going on either," Zhang Qiu replied honestly. Even Uncle didn’t know what was happening; how could Zhang Qiu possibly know?
Zhang Zhi Hua still couldn't believe it and asked, "Are you sure everything is fine?"
"Yes, I personally brought Jiang Xue out with my uncle," Zhang Qiu reassured Zhang Zhi Hua.
"That's great! As long as everything is fine. We should really thank your uncle."
"Of course, my uncle helped a lot. Jiang Xue was in there, and it was all thanks to him."
Zhang Zhi Hua stood up from the sofa to serve rice, smiling broadly, "Come on, we have plenty of time to talk. We're all hungry, let's eat."
Jiang Xue snatched the serving spoon and said, "Uncle, don't move. Your leg isn't fully healed yet; I'll do it."
Zhang Zhi Hua looked at the two ordinary stir-fried dishes on the table, which didn't even have any meat. He took out a bill and handed it to Zhang Qiu, saying, "Go to the market nearby and buy a duck. I saw one when we were moving; it smelled really good. The shop is right by the road; it's easy to find."
Zhang Qiu took the money and headed out. Jiang Xue ran a couple of steps and called out, "Don't go! It's not necessary to go through all that trouble."
"It's no trouble at all. You've lost weight staying in there; you need to eat well..." Zhang Qiu ran off quickly and disappeared around the corner, his last words carried away by the wind before they reached Jiang Xue's ears.
