Chapter 154: Reunion After Many Days
In the Detention Room, Jiang Xue sat with her head tilted, motionless and facing away from the door, tightly hugging the large light brown Teddy Bear that Zhang Qiu had given her.
Zhang Qiu, seeing Jiang Xue locked in the solitary room, excitedly pressed against the iron door and shouted, "Xue'er!"
Jiang Xue jolted, quickly turning her head and rubbing her eyes. Once she clearly saw Zhang Qiu, she rushed to the door, tears streaming down her face as she cried, "Zhang Qiu... Wuwuwu, you finally came to see me. I missed you so much... Wuwuwu..."
Zhang Qiu also shed tears, gazing affectionately at Jiang Xue. "Xue'er, I'm here to take you out. We will be together forever and never part again."
Jiang Xue cried even louder. Lan Ningshan quietly nudged Ma Zhen and whispered, "Ma Zhen, hurry and open the door."
"Open the door," Ma Zhen called out.
As the prison door swung open, Jiang Xue dashed into Zhang Qiu's arms, crying loudly as all her pent-up emotions finally found release. Zhang Qiu held Jiang Xue tightly, continuously stroking her hair and repeating over and over, "We will never be apart again, never again."
This scene moved everyone present. Lan Ningshan quietly turned away to gently wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes.
He Jun patted Zhang Qiu on the shoulder and said, "Alright, alright. No one will separate you two again. Let's go outside and see the sunlight, breathe in the fresh air."
"Shall we go, Xue'er?" Zhang Qiu asked softly.
Jiang Xue pulled away from Zhang Qiu's embrace and nodded. "Let's go; I don't want to stay here a moment longer."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu tightly held Jiang Xue's cold left hand as they walked ahead.
Ma Zhen looked at Zhang Qiu and Jiang Xue's backs and said to He Jun, "Director He, shall we go out as well? Do you want me to call the Director over?"
He Jun waved his hand, "No need for that. I'm here for personal matters, not official business."
Ma Zhen nodded and followed He Jun outside.
Lan Ningshan remained standing in place, as if a certain string in her heart had been touched, leaving her unable to calm down for a long time. After taking a few deep breaths, she felt slightly better and put a smile back on her face before striding out of the Detention Room.
The moment she stepped outside, the strong sunlight hit her, causing Jiang Xue to instinctively raise her hand to shield her eyes. Zhang Qiu hurriedly took off his black hoodie and held it over Jiang Xue's head. Jiang Xue lowered her hand, smiled at Zhang Qiu, and said, "I really like how you take care of me."
Zhang Qiu smiled back, "Then I will always take care of you."
He Jun looked around and said to Ma Zhen, "Captain Ma, where are those officers who were just here? Call them over."
"Oh, okay." Ma Zhen was slightly taken aback, unsure why Police Chief Wang Guodong wanted a few officers. But since Director He had spoken, he naturally had to comply. He walked towards the duty room across the way; they must be inside.
Seeing that He Jun was looking for Liu Hua and others, Lan Ningshan had already guessed about what was about to happen. Although Liu Hua and his team often slacked off, they were not inherently bad people. If something were to happen, it would be good to have them around. The department lacked manpower and could only hire some unstaffed contract workers who earned less than regular officers while doing more exhausting work.
Just as Lan Ningshan was about to say something, Ma Zhen had already brought Liu Hua and the others out. Liu Hua and the other officers hung their heads low, looking dispirited.
He Jun stood in front of everyone, exuding authority without anger. Seeing their slouched postures, he frowned and shouted, "Stand up straight! Keep your backs straight!"
Liu Hua and the others instinctively straightened up.
He Jun said, "The buttons should be fastened, and the hats should be worn properly."
The officers adjusted themselves once again. He Jun looked at their appearance after the adjustments, nodded in satisfaction, and said, "Now that looks like a police officer. Remember, from the moment you put on this uniform, you no longer represent yourselves. You represent the laws of this country and the image of justice." He Jun raised his voice, "Remember, no matter what, keep your backs straight. If your backs are straight, the people can stand tall in their lives."
He Jun's words resonated deeply, impacting everyone present. Long after this moment, it was fondly recounted by those in the precinct. Liu Hua, as a witness and participant, took great pride in it.
In the narrow space of less than five meters between the three-story police building and the one-story duty room stood a middle-aged man in a suit with a serious expression. Opposite him stood eight Public Security Officers in uniform, standing straight and motionless, staring ahead. He Jun's lips twitched slightly as he said in a deep voice, "Alright, you’re dismissed."
Liu Hua exchanged glances with the officers beside him, wondering if this was really over.
"What are you still doing? Go back to your duties; are you not going to work?" He Jun looked at Liu Hua and the others who were still standing there.
"Yes," Liu Hua replied, feeling secretly pleased. He had thought he was going to lose his job but was relieved that everything was fine. He silently vowed never to cross the barrier again.
"Hey, wait a moment," He Jun called out to the bald man.
The bald man stood there in shock, his heart racing and beads of sweat forming on his forehead.
He Jun said, "Take off your hat."
The bald man slowly removed his hat and held it in his hands while looking at He Jun. Being a fan of Qing Dynasty dramas, he wondered if Police Chief Wang Guodong would make him follow some ancient custom and leave without his hat.
He Jun scrutinized the shiny bald head and asked, "Why did you shave your head?"
The bald man wiped his sweat as if explaining himself and said, "Director, it's almost summer, it's hot, and we still have to wear hats when on duty, which is quite uncomfortable."
He Jun raised his hand and said, "Give me the hat."
The bald man cautiously offered the hat with both hands. He Jun took the hat, squeezed it a bit, and handed it back to the bald man, saying, "We have a rule that prohibits being bald. You need to grow your hair back. Yes, it's indeed hot, but you're not the only one feeling it. We chose this job; we have to overcome difficulties. Can you do that?"
"I can," the bald man replied, standing at attention and putting the police hat back on his head.
He Jun nodded in satisfaction and then said to Ma Zhen, "Tell the Director to have a new batch of thin hats made for these officers who are frequently on duty. If there's no budget for it, I'll cover the cost."
Ma Zhen quickly replied, "We can't let you pay for that." The bald man also stood up to object, feeling that it was his own issue.
He Jun smiled briefly before becoming serious again. "Alright, follow orders. Making a batch of hats won't cost much."
"Yes!" Ma Zhen saluted, and Liu Hua along with the bald man and others also saluted, their eyes filled with respect for He Jun.
