Chapter 153: Surprised or Not, Excited or Not?
In an instant, the police surrounding Zhang Qiu and He Jun were all astonished. They watched as their long-desired goddess walked towards Zhang Qiu. Even He Jun curiously examined Zhang Qiu, wondering when he had gained an older sister at the police station.
"Brother, what are you doing?" Lan Ningshan greeted warmly, but soon noticed something was off. Looking at the group of police officers beside her, she raised an eyebrow and asked the one with an unbuttoned shirt, "Liu Hua, what's going on? Why are you surrounding someone?"
Seeing the goddess talking to him, Liu Hua smiled charmingly and leaned closer, "Sister Shan, these people are causing trouble; we’re just handling it."
Lan Ningshan took a couple of steps back to avoid Liu Hua and said, "Causing trouble?" Not believing Liu Hua, she turned to Zhang Qiu and asked, "Brother, come here to your sister. What’s going on?"
"Sister Lan." Zhang Qiu smiled as he ran over to Lan Ningshan.
Lan Ningshan looked at Zhang Qiu, who was taller than her, and suppressed the urge to reach out and pat his head. She smiled and asked, "So, what’s this all about?"
Zhang Qiu pointed behind him. "I came here on business and saw these people climbing over the guardrail on the way. My uncle called out to them a few times, and now they think we’re looking for trouble."
"Oh?" Lan Ningshan turned around to look at Liu Hua and said loudly, "Liu Hua, why did you bring them over to climb the guardrail again?"
"Isn't it because I was in a hurry to get back to handle official business?" Liu Hua chuckled, having already rebuttoned his shirt. He needed to maintain his image in front of the goddess.
Lan Ningshan rolled her eyes and ignored him. She turned back to Zhang Qiu and asked, "What are you here for?"
"I'm here to pick up my girlfriend."
"Your girlfriend!" Lan Ningshan paused for a moment and blurted out, "Is your girlfriend named Jiang Xue?"
"Do you know her?" Zhang Qiu asked excitedly, almost grabbing Lan Ningshan's slender shoulders.
"Of course I know her; she's quite the celebrity around here," Lan Ningshan replied, suddenly realizing that this might not be appropriate. She quickly corrected herself, "This girl is very special. She doesn't talk much and just hugs a Teddy Bear while staring into space. We've all heard about her—she stabbed a thug to save her boyfriend. So it seems she was saving you?"
"That's right." Zhang Qiu felt a sharp pain in his heart upon hearing that Jiang Xue was hugging the Teddy Bear he had given her.
"She's truly a good girl; you mustn't let her down," Lan Ningshan said meaningfully as she stared at Zhang Qiu.
"Don't worry, Sister Lan." Zhang Qiu patted his chest in assurance. "Where is Jiang Xue? Please take me to see her."
Lan Ningshan hesitated. "I'm afraid that's not possible."
"Why not?" Zhang Qiu looked at Lan Ningshan and then turned to He Jun.
He Jun stepped forward and said, "The injured party is no longer pursuing the matter, and there hasn't been a formal case or arrest. She should be able to be released now, right?"
"Ah, is that possible?" Lan Ningshan was taken aback. Just then, Ma Zhen came out of the police building and, seeing Zhang Qiu there, approached him. "Are you here to pick someone up?"
"Yes, I'm here for Jiang Xue," Zhang Qiu replied.
"Ma Zhen, what's going on?" Lan Ningshan asked.
"Oh, it's like this: Jiang Xue can be released. I just received the notification today."
"Is that so?" Lan Ningshan nodded thoughtfully, suddenly turning around to make a funny face at Zhang Qiu, and said with a smile, "Congratulations, little brother."
Zhang Qiu also grinned foolishly; nothing could be more exciting than Jiang Xue being able to come out.
"Then let's hurry and take us there," He Jun said to Ma Zhen.
Ma Zhen looked at He Jun, then cast an inquiring glance at Zhang Qiu. Zhang Qiu understood and stepped forward to introduce, "Uncle, this is Officer Ma, who brought me from school to the police station that time. He's a really good person—upright and kind."
Ma Zhen stood at attention and saluted, stepping forward first, "Director He, I've long admired your reputation. I remember all the major cases you've solved; you are my idol. Now that you are our county's Police Chief Wang Guodong, I believe the public safety in Beilan County will only get better."
He Jun extended his hands for a friendly handshake with Ma Zhen, offering some encouraging words. This scene left Lan Ningshan and the other officers, including Liu Hua, wide-eyed and open-mouthed in shock. Liu Hua's face turned pale as beads of sweat began to trickle down from his forehead, soaking his clothes. Oh no, he thought, I actually contradicted Police Chief Wang Guodong—this is it; my job is finished.
Zhang Qiu watched as He Jun and Ma Zhen chatted about the case like old friends and quickly stepped in, saying, "Alright, alright, let's get down to business first and bring Jiang Xue out. You can chat however you like afterward."
Qiu Wan laughed along with everyone except Liu Hua. He Jun waved his hand decisively, "Yes, yes, let's get the person first. Ma, lead the way."
"Okay, this way please," Ma Zhen gestured invitingly.
He Jun strode ahead while Ma Zhen closely followed beside him. Just as Zhang Qiu was about to step forward, he was pulled back by Lan Ningshan who whispered, "So you're actually the nephew of the new Police Chief Wang Guodong?"
"Yes! Surprised? Excited?"
"Very surprised and very excited," Lan Ningshan exclaimed repeatedly. It was hard to believe he was a chief; he didn't have as much presence as their Director did.
"Let's go, follow me to pick up Jiang Xue." Zhang Qiu pulled Lan Ningshan's hand and headed towards the police building. Lan Ningshan's face turned red as she hurried after him.
Liu Hua watched helplessly as Zhang Qiu took his beloved goddess towards the building, feeling not a shred of anger in his heart. He was completely stunned, realizing he had offended Police Chief Wang Guodong. What was he going to do now?
"Brother Hua, this... what should we do..." the bald man stammered, feeling extremely anxious.
Liu Hua sighed and said dejectedly, "It's just our bad luck. Who would have thought that Police Chief Wang Guodong would act like this? He doesn't even have the presence of our Director."
"Yeah, Brother Hua, how could we tell he was a Police Chief Wang Guodong?"
"Brother Hua, what should we do next?"
"Sigh, just wait. Didn't you hear them say they were going to pick someone up? Once they're done, they'll come looking for us. I think our meal ticket is gone." Liu Hua regretted not listening to Lan Ningshan earlier; if he hadn't climbed over the railing, he wouldn't be in this predicament. Although this job didn't pay much, at least it was with the police. People in the county recognized that; what job sounded better than working for the government?
The bald man looked miserable. "Brother Hua, is there really nothing we can do?"
"What can we do? It's already like this; we can only accept our fate." Liu Hua unbuttoned his uniform again, holding onto the collar as the wind blew through it. The shirt underneath was completely soaked with sweat.
