Chapter 152: Jiang Xue is Fine
With the help of his brothers, Hall Society had taken up the banner, and because of this, there were many things Zhang Qiu had to consider. For the club to continue developing, it needed a sound system and detailed regulations. On his way home at noon, Zhang Qiu was still thinking about the club's matters. Halfway through, his phone rang with the familiar tune of "Beyond," which always made him feel a wave of melancholy.
Zhang Qiu stopped his electric vehicle by the roadside and took out his phone to take a look. He couldn't help but frown as he answered, "Uncle, is there something you need?"
"You actually picked up! Did you bring your phone to school again?"
"…"
"Alright, I'm not going to pursue that. I have something to discuss with you regarding Jiang Xue."
Hearing it was about Jiang Xue, all of Zhang Qiu's nerves immediately focused. He pressed on, "Uncle, what happened to Jiang Xue? Is she in trouble? Please tell me what’s going on!"
"Calm down; she's fine. It's just that it's not convenient to talk over the phone. Come to the bureau and see me."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu hung up and turned around, heading straight for the police station. There was an upside to moving; it was closer to the police station.
He rushed to the police station and registered at the entrance. The officer greeted him with a smile, "Looking for Director He?"
"Yes, I have something to discuss." Zhang Qiu replied with a smile, quickly registered and handed over his ID before running into the police building. He was already familiar with this place and quickly found himself at the door of He Jun's office on the fifth floor.
He lightly knocked twice and heard a strong voice from inside call out, "Come in!"
Zhang Qiu pushed the door open and eagerly sat down across from his uncle. Seeing He Jun's joyful expression eased his anxiety as he hurriedly asked, "Uncle, what happened? What about Jiang Xue?"
He Bureau remained silent, prompting Zhang Qiu to urge him, "Come on, stop keeping me in suspense! I'm anxious here; just tell me what happened with Jiang Xue."
"Hahaha." He Jun laughed heartily. "Jiang Xue can go back to class now."
"I, Jiang Xue, can go back to class now!" He Jun repeated again, looking at Zhang Qiu, who showed no reaction.
"I can go back to class now!" Zhang Qiu suddenly stood up, leaning over the desk, pressing himself close to He Jun. "Uncle, hurry up, what's going on?"
He Jun smiled and motioned for Zhang Qiu to sit down. "Liu Xiaofei over there has decided not to pursue responsibility. Your uncle will just go with the flow."
"Not pursuing it?" Zhang Qiu couldn't believe it. Overwhelmed by joy, he still retained a shred of rationality. After all, in Beilan County Hospital, he had stabbed himself with a knife, and Liu Xiaolong hadn't agreed to anything. How could they suddenly change their minds?
"Uncle, why would they do this?" Zhang Qiu asked He Jun.
He Jun shook his head. "Although I am Police Chief Wang Guodong, I really don't know the details. During the county meeting, we talked about this matter. Director Chen and City Committee member Yan Ji both advocated for escalating the issue. So, whether it's you or Zeng Fan or Liu Xiaolong, including the students who came to help you, none of them will be held accountable."
"I know that; Director Zhao from our grade talked to us this morning."
He Jun stared at the cup on the desk and said curiously, "I also find it strange that while the county meeting decided not to pursue you all, Jiang Xue is not included in that scope. Logically speaking, this girl without power or background would probably not fare well. But today, the Political and Legal Affairs Committee Secretary suddenly released her; this is also what the county committee meant during their meeting."
Zhang Qiu nodded thoughtfully but couldn't figure out why. Who was helping him? Zhang Qiu couldn't believe Liu Xiaolong would have a change of heart; moreover, behind Liu Xiaolong was the wicked Wang Guodong. From the current situation, it was clear that his uncle was unaware of anything else. Besides him, he didn't know anyone else who could help. Could it be Jiang Xue? Zhang Qiu shook his head; that seemed even less likely. Just as his uncle said, Jiang Xue had neither power nor background.
While Zhang Qiu was deep in thought, He Jun had already stood up and said seriously to Zhang Qiu, "Zhang Qiu, congratulations! Your girlfriend is fine now."
Zhang Qiu suddenly felt a wave of emotion. His uncle's joyful expression was genuine; in this matter, his uncle had already helped him a lot. Yet he had previously lost his temper and ignored his uncle. Sighing at his own behavior made him feel like a jerk. Zhang Qiu lightly bit his lower lip and said to He Jun, "Uncle, thank you."
"You are my nephew; how could I not take care of you? As long as it's not against the law, your uncle will definitely support you."
Zhang Qiu nodded heavily.
"Alright, alright! Don't look so down; today should be a happy day," He Jun said with a smile. Today he was indeed in a good mood.
Zhang Qiu raised his head and asked, "Uncle, since Jiang Xue is fine now, can we go out?"
"Yes."
"Can we go right now?"
"We can go right now."
"Then I'll go pick her up now." Zhang Qiu was about to leave when He Jun stopped him, saying, "Don't rush; I'll go with you."
Zhang Qiu nodded gratefully and accompanied He Jun downstairs. Zhang Qiu took his ID, and Gatekeeper Uncle lifted the curtain to greet He Jun with a bow. He Jun smiled and nodded back, then said to Zhang Qiu, "Let's go."
Zhang Qiu looked at He Jun and then around, astonished as he asked, "We're going like this?"
"Yes," He Jun replied, looking puzzled at the stunned Zhang Qiu.
"Aren't we taking a car?" Zhang Qiu clearly remembered that last time Liu Fangfei returned from the detention center, it took nearly an hour.
He Jun laughed, "The police station is right across the street; what car are we taking? Besides, my car is at home. It's strictly prohibited to use official vehicles for personal matters; I can't just take a car from the bureau for my own business, right?"
Gatekeeper Uncle chimed in at the right moment, "Director He usually rides a bicycle to work."
However, Zhang Qiu's focus was not on that; he stared at He Jun in surprise. "Uncle, you mean Jiang Xue is at the police station, just across from us?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't you tell me all this time?"
"Given your personality, if I told you Jiang Xue was in the police station, you would have barged in without hesitation!"
"..." Zhang Qiu was at a loss for words. His uncle was right; if he had known Jiang Xue was in the police station, he would have indeed forced his way in.
"I've actually been delaying filing a case regarding Jiang Xue. The prosecutor's office hasn't approved an arrest, and the leaders of various departments have been quite busy because of your little scuffle. Now that everything is fine, I've won my bet," He Jun said with a calm smile, striding forward.
Zhang Qiu hurried to catch up with He Jun, crossing to the opposite sidewalk at the intersection. Just as they were nearing the entrance of the police station, a Police Iveco stopped in the middle of the road. Seven or eight uniformed officers got out and directly climbed over the guardrail towards the police station.
"Hey, why are you climbing over the guardrail? Is it really that hard to walk a few extra steps?" He Jun shouted at them, questioning their actions.
The group of officers hesitated and then stopped. Once they realized it was a father and son who had called out to them, they burst into laughter and pointed at He Jun, saying, "Mind your own business and hurry along."
He Jun chuckled lightly and looked at one officer whose uniform buttons were undone, questioning, "Isn't this something you should be concerned about? Even kids know not to do this. As police officers, every word and action represents the image of public security!"
"Who do you think you are to tell us what to do? We don't have time to waste talking to you; just get lost," one of them said as they started heading into the police station.
He Jun watched helplessly as they entered the station, shaking his head in resignation. He sighed inwardly, thinking, "Reforming grassroots teams is a long and arduous task." He then turned to Zhang Qiu and said, "We'll deal with them later; let's focus on what we need to do first."
"Okay."
Zhang Qiu nodded in agreement and followed He Jun into the police station.
"You still haven't had enough!" The group of officers stood in the courtyard and upon seeing He Jun enter with Zhang Qiu, they raised their eyebrows and surrounded them.
"What do you want?" Zhang Qiu shouted before He Jun could respond.
"What do we want? What are you doing here? This is a police station; it's not a place you can just walk into!"
"I can't go in? The sign at the door says it's for the people. I'm here to do business, isn't that enough?" Zhang Qiu met the gaze of the casually dressed police officer and found it amusing that he couldn't enter.
The officer in casual attire looked Zhang Qiu up and down. His clothes were clearly not high-end, and then he glanced at He Jun, who was dressed in a black suit and pants, wearing leather shoes and sporting a crew cut—an image of an ordinary office worker. The officer smiled reassuringly and said, "You can do business, but not today. You need to come back later."
Zhang Qiu was unsure if it was true and instinctively looked at He Jun.
He Jun gently shook his head at Zhang Qiu and shouted at the officer, "This is the first time I've heard that you can't conduct business today. Is this how you treat the public?"
At that moment, another officer behind the casually dressed one took off his hat and held it in his hand, lightly tugging at the sleeve of the first officer. He reminded him, "Brother Hua, could this be some kind of leader? With all this talk about the public, he doesn't seem like an ordinary person."
The casually dressed officer chuckled softly and replied, "Look at what he's wearing; that suit can't be worth more than two hundred yuan. Besides, which leader has a crew cut? Even our Director doesn't have one. Don't worry; he can't be any kind of leader. I bet he's just a meddlesome boss. Also, have you ever seen a leader come out with their son?"
"That's true," the bald officer relaxed, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and put his hat back on.
Just then, Zhang Qiu spotted a familiar figure walking out of the police building. The tailored uniform accentuated her curves, her hair was styled in a bun secured with a hairpin, topped with a female police cap that made her look impressive. Zhang Qiu waved his hand and shouted, "Sister Lan!"
Lan Ningshan paused for a moment, turned around, and upon seeing Zhang Qiu, smiled in surprise as she walked over to him. "Brother, you're here!"
