Chapter 138: Another Fruit Knife
He Jun was still immersed in his thoughts about the video when Zhang Qiu interrupted him with a question. He slowly replied, "It can be helpful. With this video, everything at the scene of the incident is clear; it's more intuitive than any evidence. In my years of handling cases, I've never encountered a situation like this."
Zhang Qiu felt relieved, but He Jun continued, "The video is useful, but Jiang Xue still has to face sentencing."
This cold water doused Zhang Qiu's hopes completely, and he hurriedly asked He Jun, "Uncle, is there really no way out?"
He Jun frowned deeply. "There is a way, but it's impossible."
"Uncle, what is it? Please tell me."
He Jun appeared troubled. Seeing a glimmer of hope, Zhang Qiu couldn't care less about anything else; he was determined to try any method. He pleaded desperately, "Uncle, just tell me. I’m willing to do anything as long as Jiang Xue is safe."
He Jun looked at Zhang Qiu's expression and couldn't bear to refuse him. However, he knew that telling him would likely lead to disappointment, which would be even more tormenting. In the end, He Jun gritted his teeth and revealed the information to Zhang Qiu.
"Unless Liu Xiaofei decides not to pursue it further. The law states that fights arising from civil disputes are governed by the Public Security Administration Punishment Law. If the situation is relatively minor, the Public Security Bureau can mediate; as long as both parties reach an agreement, there will be no punishment. However, in Liu Xiaofei's case, it has already resulted in minor injuries, which means criminal responsibility must be pursued."
"What should we do then?"
"The same method applies; we still need Liu Xiaofei not to pursue it. As long as both parties negotiate well, they can receive a lighter punishment. I can manage that; even if we can't secure her release, we could arrange for some form of supervision so that Jiang Xue won't have to spend time in prison."
Zhang Qiu quickly agreed, "Okay, I'll go talk to him. I'll find Liu Xiaofei."
"It’s useless; how could he possibly agree? Given the animosity between you two, the worse off you are, the happier he becomes. There's no way he would help you." He Jun didn't want to discourage Zhang Qiu from the bottom of his heart, but as an uncle, he felt it necessary to share these harsh truths with his nephew. It was better for him to face reality than to set himself up for humiliation.
"I don't care! I'm going to talk to him. If he doesn't agree, I'll kill him." Zhang Qiu's eyes turned red with anger; even He Jun found it terrifying.
He Jun quickly intervened, "What are you talking about? Kill someone? How could you even think of that? Killing someone won't save Jiang Xue; it will only add years to her sentence and get you executed as well. What will happen then? What about your parents? What will happen when Jiang Xue gets out?"
Zhang Qiu shook his head repeatedly, "I just wanted to scare Liu Xiaofei; he must be terrified."
"Liu Xiaofei might be scared, but don't forget, behind Liu Xiaofei is Liu Xiaolong, and behind Liu Xiaolong is Wang Guodong. Do you think Wang Guodong would be so kind?"
"Regardless, I have to give it a try." Zhang Qiu's tone was firm. He understood what his uncle meant, but for Jiang Xue, he was willing to do anything.
"You can go, but you need to be mentally prepared; they will definitely make it difficult for you. You must promise me one thing: no matter what happens, stay calm and never do anything you'll regret," He Jun said. Seeing Zhang Qiu's determination, he no longer tried to stop him. Sometimes it's better for young people to learn from their own experiences.
Zhang Qiu nodded slightly and promised, "Don't worry; I know what to do." He then asked, "When will Jiang Xue's case be judged? I really want to see her."
Zhang Qiu noticed that whenever he mentioned Jiang Xue, He Jun's expression became noticeably unnatural. Was there some change? A sense of unease filled Zhang Qiu's heart as he hurriedly questioned He Jun, "Uncle, what's going on with this matter?"
He Jun's face was clouded with worry as he recalled the numerous phone calls he had received. After a long pause, he finally said, "The fight you guys got into involved too many people. Especially those from Zeng Fan's side; it involves the children of officials from various departments in our county. Each call was directed to my phone—whether they were pleading or complaining, their only goal was to absolve their children of responsibility. As for the charges? They certainly didn't dare ask me to handle you, so they all agreed to place the blame entirely on Jiang Xue."
"That's despicable. Uncle, you didn't agree to them, did you?" Zhang Qiu stared into He Jun's eyes.
He Jun shot Zhang Qiu a glare and replied discontentedly, "Of course not! Do you think so little of your uncle? Let me make this clear: no matter how much they stir things up, I won't take a stand. Let them make a fuss; the bigger the fuss, the better."
Zhang Qiu interrupted He Jun, "Isn't making a fuss more dangerous?"
"You're mistaken; the bigger the fuss, the safer it is. Think about it—none of those in power are ordinary people. Let them create chaos; in the end, it might just blow over."
"What about Jiang Xue?" Zhang Qiu wasn't concerned about those people's issues; he only cared about Jiang Xue and his Hall Society.
"Ultimately, Jiang Xue's fate depends on Liu Xiaofei's attitude; after all, it's a matter of criminal responsibility."
"Then I'll go find him right away." Without delay, Qiu Wan left. He Jun watched Zhang Qiu's retreating figure and couldn't help but shake his head. This kid was still too young and not steady enough.
Zhang Qiu took his identification from Old Li. Seeing Zhang Qiu's anxious demeanor, Old Li asked, "What's the rush? What happened?"
"Big deal." Zhang Qiu ran quickly, and by the time Old Li understood those two words, Zhang Qiu had already crossed to the other side of the road.
The Electric Vehicle was indeed safe parked in front of the police station. Zhang Qiu hopped on and sped through the streets of Beilan County, the wind rushing past his ears as his hair flew in the breeze. This trip to find his uncle was proving worthwhile; there was indeed a solution to the problem. Although it seemed unlikely to succeed, at least it was a plan. Sometimes, listening to the advice of elders is not a bad idea, and Zhang Qiu regretted not consulting his uncle sooner.
Some people become obsessed when they miss someone or something. At this moment, Zhang Qiu found himself in such a state. He skillfully maneuvered the Electric Vehicle around obstacles, but in his mind, he could only see Jiang Xue's figure. He didn't even realize how he had ridden all the way until he found himself parking the Electric Vehicle in the county hospital's parking lot.
Recently, Zhang Qiu had been frequently visiting the hospital and was quite familiar with it. Entering through the main door, he headed straight through the lobby toward the elevator. As usual, a large crowd surrounded the elevator. Anxious, Zhang Qiu turned into the stairwell and climbed up to the fifteenth floor in one breath.
By the time he reached the hallway, Zhang Qiu was panting heavily. Despite his regular exercise, running up fifteen flights of stairs was still quite taxing. He had already inquired with a nurse last time; Liu Xiaofei was in Room Five Patient. Zhang Qiu walked directly over.
At the door, he leaned to look through the glass panel. Liu Xiaofei could sit up now, leaning against the headboard while smiling at her two younger brothers who were taking care of her. Zhang Qiu pushed open the door and walked in.
When the ward door opened, Liu Xiaofei initially thought it was a nurse coming to change her dressing. She instinctively glanced at the entrance and widened her eyes in surprise, pulling back and shouting at her brothers beside her, "It's him! Stop him! Don't let him come over!"
The two younger brothers sitting nearby immediately stood up and approached Zhang Qiu. They had no idea who he was; to them, he seemed like just an ordinary and honest student. They couldn't understand why their brother Fei looked so flustered.
"Stop! What do you want?" The two brothers blocked Zhang Qiu's path.
Zhang Qiu ignored them and directly addressed Liu Xiaofei, saying, "I'm not here to cause you trouble; don't worry. I need to talk to you about something."
Upon hearing this, Liu Xiaolong's brothers shifted their attention to Liu Xiaofei. Seeing that Zhang Qiu was alone without anyone else following him eased Liu Xiaofei's worries slightly. She pointed at Zhang Qiu and said, "You stay right there; you two watch him and don't let him come closer." Liu Xiaofei then set her phone aside; if Zhang Qiu had been any later, her call would have gone through to Liu Xiaolong.
Watching Liu Xiaofei's reaction made Zhang Qiu want to laugh out loud but he held it back. He was here to ask for a favor and couldn't afford to offend her.
Liu Xiaolong remained vigilant as he stared at Zhang Qiu. "What do you want from me?"
"I want to ask you not to hold Jiang Xue responsible." Zhang Qiu's tone was flat, and there was no hint of emotion on his face.
Liu Xiaofei wanted to laugh upon hearing this but managed to hold it back, saying, "Why should I? The way I am now is all thanks to her. I can't do anything I want; I can only stay in this empty hospital room. You have no idea how hard this is for me. I’ll ask you one thing: Jiang Xue injured me; shouldn't she go to jail?"
Zhang Qiu stared at Liu Xiaofei, remaining silent.
Liu Xiaofei, feeling emotional, disregarded Zhang Qiu's threats and pressed on, "So, should she or shouldn't she?"
"She should," Zhang Qiu gritted his teeth and spat out the word.
"Isn't that enough? Then why are you here?" Liu Xiaofei tilted her head back, looking defiant, but Zhang Qiu felt helpless.
Zhang Qiu focused on Liu Xiaofei's glasses and said slowly, "As long as you promise not to pursue this matter, I will agree to any request you make, even my life."
Liu Xiaofei burst into laughter but accidentally moved and pulled at her wound, causing her to grimace in pain. A nurse hurried over to support her. Once she calmed down, she said, "Your life? Do you think I'm an idiot? If I took your life, wouldn't it be me who ends up in jail?"
"What I mean is, as long as you agree, you can make any request." Zhang Qiu looked at Liu Xiaofei with a mix of anger and hatred. However, he had Jiang Xue's fate in his hands; he had no choice but to bow his head.
Suddenly, Liu Xiaofei grabbed a fruit knife from the bedside table and threw it at Zhang Qiu with force. Zhang Qiu focused on the spinning knife flying toward him and caught it with one hand, quietly observing Liu Xiaofei to see what she intended.
