Chapter 108: Embracing and Crying
Jiang Xue suddenly pushed Zhang Qiu away, darting forward, her soft lips pressing against his. Zhang Qiu felt pain as Jiang Xue bit down hard on his lip.
"I have no regrets. I am willing to give everything for you, even my life."
"Silly girl, I won't let you die for me." Zhang Qiu held Jiang Xue tightly in his arms once more. At that moment, he made a decision and said, "Xue'er, tomorrow, I will take you to turn ourselves in."
Jiang Xue was slightly taken aback, tears streaming down her cheeks. She nodded and said, "Okay."
Zhang Qiu gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and comforted her, "Don't cry. I will always wait for you. When you come out, we will get married; we have a bright future ahead of us."
Jiang Xue's tears flowed freely, and Zhang Qiu couldn't help but shed tears as well. The two held each other tightly. Zhang Qiu wasn't sure if his decision was the right one, but he recognized a reality. His uncle was right; this was the best choice to minimize harm to Jiang Xue. Becoming a fugitive and living in hiding would mean there would be no hope for them.
Most importantly, with He Jun's connections, Zhang Qiu believed Jiang Xue wouldn't suffer inside. Nevertheless, his heart felt like it was being chopped by an axe. He hated himself for not being capable enough to protect the woman he loved so dearly.
"I must become strong enough to protect my family!" Zhang Qiu vowed silently in his heart while holding Jiang Xue tightly.
...
He Mei returned home from work as usual, hanging her raincoat on the rack by the door. Zhang Zhi Hua sat on the sofa in the living room, watching a news program on TV without really paying attention. Seeing his wife come home, he called out, "Come here, I need to talk to you about something."
He Mei plugged her phone into charge and sat down beside Zhang Zhi Hua, asking, "What's wrong? You look like something's bothering you. Is your wound hurting again?"
Zhang Zhi Hua shook his head and replied, "My leg is almost healed; it's nothing serious. I wanted to talk about our son coming home."
He Mei suddenly slapped her forehead and sighed repeatedly, "Oh dear, how could I forget? Today is the day he comes home." She lamented, "I've been so busy that I completely forgot about it. I need to go out soon and buy some groceries to improve your meals."
Zhang Zhi Hua nodded and looked at He Mei seriously, saying, "We really need to improve our meals; we have guests coming over today."
"Who?" He Mei glanced into the inner room but didn't see anyone there.
"Don't look, she's not here." Zhang Zhi Hua pointed to the second floor. "She's upstairs, a friend of our son, a girl."
He Mei had a knowing look and smiled, "Is it that girl we met at the hospital? I think she's quite nice. Very well-behaved, polite, and does a good job taking care of people. Our son will have someone to look after him."
As He Mei was daydreaming about her future daughter-in-law, Zhang Zhi Hua pulled her back to reality with a single sentence: "It's not her; it's another girl."
He Mei widened her eyes and murmured, "Who is it?"
"I don't know." Zhang Zhi Hua shook his head. "Anyway, when the two kids came back, they were covered in blood, so they must have gotten into a fight outside."
Upon hearing about the blood, He Mei felt faint and nearly collapsed. Just as she was about to fall, Zhang Zhi Hua caught her and said, "Don't panic; our child is fine. I've checked him." He helped He Mei sit up straight.
He Mei was anxious and tightly grasped Zhang Zhi Hua's arm, asking, "What exactly happened to our son?"
"I'm not sure; I haven't had the chance to ask him yet. As soon as he got back, he took the girl upstairs to shower and hasn't come down since. I didn't want to go up and ask."
"That's true." He Mei nodded with a frown but suddenly remembered something and asked, "What does this girl look like?"
Zhang Zhi Hua suddenly smiled, poking He Mei's forehead. "You’re thinking about something again. This girl looks quite delicate and seems very gentle; she's nice."
"That's good then; our son has good taste," He Mei said with a smile. "In that case, I'll go buy some groceries now and make something delicious."
Zhang Zhi Hua stopped He Mei from getting up. "Wait until later; it's still raining."
"No way! Who knows when this rain will stop? I'm going now. Later at the dinner table, we can work together to see if we can find out anything," He Mei said, waiting for Zhang Zhi Hua to decide.
Zhang Zhi Hua thought for a moment and found it feasible, so he nodded. "Alright then, let's do that. Be careful out there. Buy some good food to treat the kids."
He Mei felt relieved knowing their son was fine but was still worried about what had happened. After discussing with her husband, she hurriedly got up, put on her raincoat, and headed straight for the market. Coincidentally, by the time He Mei and Zhang Zhi Hua were talking, the rain outside had already stopped.
Every evening at this time is the golden hour for vendors to make money. As soon as it arrives, many vendors flood the streets, coming from nearby villages to sell various vegetables and fruits. Their prices are much cheaper than those in supermarkets, and their presence on the street makes it more convenient for people. Many office workers buy groceries from the stalls near their homes after work to cook dinner. The only inconvenience is that they often block the roads.
Today's heavy rain left those preparing to set up their stalls extremely disappointed. Fortunately, just as people were getting off work, the skies cleared up. The nearby vendors quickly set up their stalls, placing a few bricks in areas where water had pooled, which mitigated the issue.
At this moment, He Mei arrived at the nearest street. Looking around, she saw that both sides of the street were filled with vibrant green vegetables, with a couple of tofu vendors mixed in. On the west side, several meat stalls were busy sharpening their knives. The vendors were all lively and energetically calling out prices, with discount shouts rising above one another.
The street was even more crowded than usual, and He Mei could only inch along with the crowd. If a car passed by at this moment, it would be like a giant beast stuck in a swamp, unable to escape.
He Mei approached a familiar meat stall and smiled, "Boss, cut me five pounds of pork belly."
"Sure thing! It's all good pork belly; we just slaughtered the pigs this morning." The boss picked up a piece of meat and placed it on the cutting board, skillfully slicing off a portion. He asked, "Having guests over?"
"Yes, my son brought his girlfriend home."
"Then you need to treat them well." The boss smiled broadly as he weighed the cut pork belly on the electronic scale and said, "A little over five pounds; I'll charge you for five."
"Thank you!" He Mei paid and happily took the bag of pork before heading towards other stalls...
