Chapter 81: Strange Uncle: Extraordinary Features
Zhang Qiu and Wang Jinghan were sitting across from each other, chatting while the cold wind howled outside, and the inside was warm as spring. Before long, a pot of rich and spicy shrimp was served at the table, with golden chicken wings and large shrimp filling the pot, adorned with cucumbers and bean sprouts, while the ingredients for hot pot were neatly arranged. The bottle of Sour Plum Drink still had water droplets hanging from it. Zhang Qiu said to the waiter, "Could you please replace the Sour Plum Drink with one at room temperature?"
"Sure," the waiter replied pleasantly, taking away the Sour Plum Drink that still had water droplets on it.
Wang Jinghan looked at Zhang Qiu with admiration and said, "How did you know I don't drink it cold?"
Zhang Qiu pointed at Wang Jinghan's bag and laughed, "Just look at what that is." Wang Jinghan glanced down at her bag and blushed instantly, hurriedly stuffing a pink-wrapped bag deeper inside, thinking that she must have accidentally taken it out when she got her phone.
Seeing Wang Jinghan like this, Zhang Qiu couldn't help but laugh out loud. Wang Jinghan shot him a glare and said, "No laughing!"
Zhang Qiu quickly stifled his laughter and said seriously, "Not laughing, not laughing."
"Just eat," Wang Jinghan said again, giving him another glare.
Zhang Qiu felt uncomfortable holding back his laughter; he really wanted to burst out laughing, but seeing Wang Jinghan like that made him reluctant to do so. He took a couple of sips of Sour Plum Drink to feel better.
Zhang Qiu picked up a chicken wing for Wang Jinghan and praised, "This place really makes delicious food."
Wang Jinghan giggled and said, "Right? I love eating here. Hey, didn't you dream about me? Tell me about it."
Zhang Qiu set his chopsticks aside, sat up straight, and passionately recounted his dream: "As the sunset painted the horizon red, birds returned home with food in their beaks; as the river reflected the red of the swaying water plants, I walked by the water's edge with you admiring the mugwort..."
"Stop!" Wang Jinghan made a stopping gesture and shot him a look. "Speak normally; I can't understand that."
Zhang Qiu chuckled and began to narrate his dream in simpler terms. When he reached the part where he kissed Wang Jinghan, he laughed foolishly while she looked at him with both anger and amusement, stabbing at the chicken wings in her plate until they were shredded.
At the neighboring table, two older uncles were drinking and chatting. One of them suddenly leaned over to Zhang Qiu and said, "Kid, I see you have good features; you're a person of fortune."
Zhang Qiu didn't expect a Strange Uncle to suddenly compliment his looks. Was he some kind of fortune teller? As Zhang Qiu sized up the Strange Uncle while politely nodding his head, he glanced at Wang Jinghan, who was secretly laughing.
While Zhang Qiu was smiling politely, the Strange Uncle spoke to his companion across from him and then turned back to Zhang Qiu saying, "Chubby, I think you look good too."
Zhang Qiu's face darkened; chubby? What kind of nickname was that? Although he felt displeased inside, he couldn't show it. Moreover, the following words were still compliments directed at him; he could only force a smile. At this moment, Wang Jinghan could no longer hold back her laughter and covered her mouth with her arm while giggling.
Without waiting for Zhang Qiu to speak, Strange Uncle rebutted the man across from him, pointing at Zhang Qiu's arm and asking, "Is he still fat?" Then he shook his head, saying, "Not fat at all, not fat one bit. He's strong. Just look at his arms; they're so thin, how could he possibly be fat? And his legs aren't fat either. If he had a big butt, that would be a different story; it wouldn't look good."
Zhang Qiu felt like an animal in a zoo being judged, unable to do anything about it, and looked helplessly at Wang Jinghan, who was laughing quietly beside him. When Wang Jinghan noticed Zhang Qiu looking at her, she laughed even harder. Suddenly, Strange Uncle shifted the conversation to Wang Jinghan and asked, "Is this young lady still in school?"
Wang Jinghan paused for a moment before replying, "No, I'm working now."
Another uncle chimed in, "Good, good! The guy is handsome and the girl is beautiful; being young is great!"
Now it was Wang Jinghan's turn to look helplessly at Zhang Qiu. Zhang Qiu burst out laughing, clearly thinking that since she had just laughed at him, it was now her turn. Wang Jinghan shot Zhang Qiu a glare.
Strange Uncle spoke with the wisdom of experience, saying earnestly, "It's nice for couples to go out for a meal together, but of course, academics and careers should come first."
The other uncle laughed and said, "At this age, dating is just right."
Zhang Qiu watched the two uncles enjoying themselves and truly didn't know what was so good about it. A couple? He was still a lifelong single dog. Zhang Qiu thought Wang Jinghan would clarify their relationship but was surprised when she simply smiled in response, tacitly agreeing with the uncles.
Not knowing what else to do, Zhang Qiu picked up a golden shrimp and placed it on Wang Jinghan's plate. He then took one for himself and slowly chewed it without looking at the two uncles at the next table.
Who would have thought that Strange Uncle would see Zhang Qiu serving shrimp to Wang Jinghan and get excited again? He praised loudly, "That's right! You should have been serving her food long ago. Don't be shy; just serve her!"
As Strange Uncle spoke, Wang Jinghan also placed a piece of meat on Zhang Qiu's plate. Strange Uncle leaned closer to Zhang Qiu and whispered in his ear, "This girl is great; you have good taste."
Zhang Qiu listened to Strange Uncle while glancing at the bewildered expression on Wang Jinghan's face and replied with a smirk, "Yes, yes, yes; she's really nice."
Strange Uncle returned to his seat as the other uncle said, "Alright then, let's not disturb them any longer. Let's eat well and drink well; it's time for us to go."
"Okay." Strange Uncle stood up from his seat and turned to Zhang Qiu saying, "I'm leaving now; you two eat more! Thank you very much!"
After Strange Uncle left, Zhang Qiu looked confusedly at the other uncle and asked, "What's up with him?"
The uncle laughed and replied, "Thank you! He tends to act like this when he's had too much to drink. He learned four languages and loves to show off. You two carry on."
Zhang Qiu smiled and waved goodbye while secretly marveling that even in Beilan County Town there were hidden talents.
After Strange Uncle left, Wang Jinghan leaned closer to Zhang Qiu and asked, "Just now, was that Strange Uncle talking about you and me?"
"How do you know?"
"I can tell by the look in your eyes, and, hmph, did I say something bad about you?" Wang Jinghan glared at Zhang Qiu in anger.
Zhang Qiu chuckled and said, "Yeah, that uncle really did talk to me."
"What did he say?" Wang Jinghan's eyes sparkled with curiosity.
Just as Zhang Qiu was about to answer, she suddenly seemed to remember something and burst into laughter. Leaning closer to Wang Jinghan's ear, she pretended to be serious and asked, "Do you really want to hear it?"
Wang Jinghan nodded vigorously.
"I'll tell you, that uncle is a good person, but... he has a bit of a chest," Qiu Wan said, quickly pulling back. Sure enough, Wang Jinghan clenched her fists and looked ready to pounce, causing Zhang Qiu to burst into laughter.
Wang Jinghan pouted, "No laughing!"
To outsiders, they might seem like a loving couple. But Zhang Qiu understood that no matter how good it looked on the surface, it was just a facade. Wang Jinghan had her own principles; being good friends was already the best outcome for now.
