Chapter Seventieth: Call Me Sister
"What do you two think?" Zhang Qiu asked Gao Zhi and Yao Yu, who had yet to respond. The two seemed to be in a dilemma.
Gao Zhi appeared hesitant, as if he had made a significant decision. After a deep breath, he said, "Brother Qiu, I'm with you." Once he finished speaking, he let out a long sigh, and his eyes became resolute.
Zhang Qiu nodded. He had always found Gao Zhi's support strange. Ever since the incident where he was posted online and later returned safely, Gao Zhi had been acting this way, even following him to the cafeteria to interrupt his meals with Jiang Xue. However, Zhang Qiu was not the type to question everything; some things did not need clarification. Since Gao Zhi was willing to join him, they would work together. Having a common goal was what mattered most.
The only one left unresponsive was Yao Yu. Zhang Qiu looked at him, and the others did too. Yao Yu was still hesitating, imagining the lives of those who lived on the edge. The camaraderie among brothers, the enviable social status, the beautiful women always around them, and the stacks of cash.
Thinking about all this made Yao Yu yearn for that lifestyle. Yet he feared it might jeopardize his future; with college entrance exams approaching, was this really a clear choice? Nothing was more important than those exams. If he declined now, could he still hold his head high in front of these brothers?
Yang Yu already felt that the students Zhang Qiu gathered were timid and incapable of achieving anything. Seeing Yao Yu's indecisiveness only fueled Yang Yu's frustration. Suddenly, he slammed a bottle on the table and shouted, "We're all men! Let's do this! Brother Qiu, my people and I absolutely support you; anyone who disagrees will be dealt with."
"Good! Those willing to follow me, let's go! With our own efforts, we'll carve out a space that belongs to us!" Zhang Qiu declared with fervor. He no longer waited for Yao Yu's response; everyone had their own aspirations, and he wouldn't force anyone.
Everyone excitedly raised their glasses, except for Yao Yu, who awkwardly watched them with one hand raised in mid-air, unsure whether to toast or put it down.
Seeing Yao Yu's awkwardness, Zhang Qiu smiled and encouraged him, "Just lift your glass and join us for a toast! Regardless of whether you join me or not, we are all brothers here. Cheers!"
At Zhang Qiu's words, Yao Yu's eyes reddened. He raised his glass and drank deeply, gasping for breath afterward.
After clinking glasses, everyone eagerly grabbed skewers from the table and began eating heartily. Zhang Qiu particularly enjoyed this barbecue place; the boss grilled skewers exceptionally well—each skewer perfectly cut and grilled until crispy on the outside while remaining tender inside. The oil sizzling on the surface came directly from the meat itself rather than being brushed on like in most barbecue places.
Zhang Qiu handed a skewer to Yao Yu with a smile and said, "Don't make it so awkward; eat and drink up! It wouldn't be fun if we were so formal."
Yao Yu forced a smile as he took the skewer from Zhang Qiu and took a big bite. After swallowing it down, he looked at Zhang Qiu and said, "Brother Qiu, I've made my decision. I want to be with all of you; I'm joining."
Zhang Qiu was somewhat surprised but smiled knowingly and happily patted Yao Yu's hand. "Great! Welcome aboard!"
Song Weidong also chimed in with a smile: "Brother Qiu, we've all come to an agreement; let's commemorate this conversation."
"How should we commemorate it?" Zhang Qiu asked with a grin.
"Let's come up with a catchy name."
Zhang Qiu habitually glanced at the flower board, then looked at the dining table in front of him, smiled slightly, and said, "I think we should call it the Round Table Conference."
"Sounds good!" Everyone unanimously agreed with the name proposed by Zhang Qiu.
Amidst the laughter and joy, Zhang Qiu took his first step in life. A person's life is destined to be full of ups and downs; on the path of growth, there are countless crossroads. No matter which way one turns, they will face a brand new life. From this moment on, Zhang Qiu's fate was destined to no longer be as ordinary as it had been.
Just as they were laughing, Zhang Qiu's phone rang at an inopportune moment. He frowned slightly. He initially wanted to hang up on the call that disturbed him, but for some reason, he instinctively glanced at the caller ID. Upon seeing that name, Zhang Qiu instantly changed his mind and swiped to answer.
"Liu Journalist, how's your vacation going?" Zhang Qiu asked with a smile.
"Not bad, taking this opportunity to rest well."
"Liu Journalist, are you okay? Your voice sounds a bit down..." Previously, Liu Fangfei was full of energy, but her voice over the phone gave a sense of weakness.
"Zhang Qiu, I have something to tell you." Liu Fangfei's tone was slightly agitated; telling Zhang Qiu about this matter made her feel a bit better.
"You." Zhang Qiu felt uneasy inside.
"Liu Fangfei said: "The report about Wang Guodong has come out."
"Ah?" Zhang Qiu was taken aback for a moment and then said, "Thank you, Liu Journalist."
"It wasn't me; it was the Editor-in-Chief who reported it." Liu Fangfei replied.
Upon hearing this from Liu Fangfei, Zhang Qiu suddenly remembered that he had called the editor-in-chief before. On that call, the Editor-in-Chief had indeed promised to report on this matter. Zhang Qiu had been concerned about Liu Fangfei's safety but had forgotten about this issue. It seemed that the Editor-in-Chief kept his word.
"You have a good Editor-in-Chief," Zhang Qiu praised.
"Yes, it's just a pity that the Editor-in-Chief was dismissed because of this matter." Liu Fangfei's voice became even weaker.
"What a shame; he is a good person," Zhang Qiu said slowly. The dismissal of the Editor-in-Chief was unexpected for him. Hearing this from Liu Fangfei, he felt a subtle sadness inside. After all, he had made that call to the Editor-in-Chief, and he felt some responsibility for the dismissal.
But soon, Zhang Qiu caught another piece of information. After experiencing the storm surrounding Liu Fangfei, it was surprising that Wang Guodong could still cause the dismissal of an Editor-in-Chief from a news agency. This meant that Wang Guodong must have strong backing. It was not unusual to imagine; which subordinate official does not have a well-connected superior? This has always been the case throughout history.
"Liu Fangfei" said, "Alright, I need to go accompany my mom to buy groceries. She'll be cooking lunch herself, so I won't chat with you for now."
"Zhang Qiu" replied, "Okay, then, Liu Journalist, take care of yourself and don't put too much pressure on your mind."
"Zhang Qiu!" "Liu Fangfei" suddenly called out his name over the phone.
"Yes?"
"You are quite nice," "Liu Fangfei" said with a smile.
"Zhang Qiu" responded with a confused "uh-huh," and "Liu Fangfei" continued, "From now on, you can call me sister."
"Zhang Qiu" was caught off guard; he never expected "Liu Fangfei" would make such a request. Thinking that "Zhang Qiu" might not be willing, "Liu Fangfei" shook her head in disappointment and said softly, "Never mind, I don’t know what got into me."
"Sister." After hesitating for a moment, "Zhang Qiu" finally called her sister.
"Ah, good little brother," "Liu Fangfei" responded happily before she hung up the phone with satisfaction.
