Chapter Sixty-Six: A Path to Darkness?
In the hallway of the Senior Year Teaching Building, Xu Qing Chu was comforting Zhao Guohong. "Teacher Zhao, don't be so angry. They're just kids. This incident isn't entirely their fault."
Zhao Guohong sighed and said, "I know it's not entirely their fault, but fighting has no right or wrong; if you fight, it's wrong! Right now is a critical time for reviewing for the college entrance exam, and this happened... sigh... never mind, Teacher Xu, you go ahead and teach."
"Alright, I'll go teach. Teacher Zhao, try not to get too worked up," Xu Qing Chu continued to offer comfort.
Upon returning to the classroom, Xu Qing Chu found it quiet inside. Zhang Qiu stole a glance at Xu Qing Chu before quickly lowering her head to memorize classical texts.
After class, Zhang Qiu packed her textbooks into her bag along with a large stack of unfinished test papers. When she looked up, Jiang Xue was standing beside her without her noticing.
"Aren't you going to eat?" Zhang Qiu forced a smile.
"I'm not eating today. You... um..." Jiang Xue seemed hesitant and stumbled over her words.
"The director wants me to go home and reflect for a week. Last night's incident escalated."
Jiang Xue looked at Zhang Qiu with a complex expression. When Director Zhao called Zhang Qiu out, the clever Jiang Xue had already guessed this would be the outcome. But she still held onto hope; last time when the police came, Zhang Qiu returned safely, right? However, this time, hearing the result directly from Zhang Qiu made Jiang Xue's heart sink.
Zhang Qiu noticed Jiang Xue's demeanor and reassured her, "Don't worry, it'll be fine. I'll be back in a few days to attend classes again, and then we can go eat together."
Jiang Xue kept her head down in silence but suddenly looked up earnestly and said, "You must study well at home. When you come back, I'll help you catch up on what you missed."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu readily agreed.
"Brother Qiu, we should go now." As soon as Yao Yu finished speaking, Zhao Pingchuan gave him a playful knock on the head and then smiled at Zhang Qiu, saying, "Brother Qiu, no rush, no rush. We'll leave in a bit."
Yao Yu's remark was just a spontaneous comment, and he didn't notice that the class beauty was currently talking to Zhang Qiu. After being playfully hit by Zhao Pingchuan, Yao Yu chuckled and said, "Yeah, no rush."
Zhang Qiu looked at them and thought it was fine to let them joke around a bit; it would help deepen their friendship. However, Jiang Xue couldn't help but giggle softly, covering her mouth with her hand and gently saying, "Alright, you all go back. Actually, it's not bad to have a long break and rest well."
Zhang Qiu turned to look at Jiang Xue and once again patted her head in front of everyone, saying, "Then I'm off. Otherwise, if the homeroom teacher comes in later, we'll get scolded again. Take care of yourself."
"Okay, I'll take good care of myself," Jiang Xue nodded.
Zhang Qiu waved to Gao Zhi and the others, saying, "Let's go!"
"Let's go."
The five boys walked out of the classroom with their large bags swaying. Jiang Xue watched Zhang Qiu's figure disappear around the corner of the stairs before returning to the classroom, feeling a wave of disappointment in her heart.
Once outside the school gate, Zhang Qiu felt a mix of emotions. This was the first time since starting high school that he had truly broken school rules and was going home to reflect on it. He felt an indescribable sensation inside. Looking at his friends beside him, he said, "Let's have lunch together at noon and then head back home in the afternoon."
Zhang Qiu's suggestion received unanimous approval.
As they passed by a newsstand on the street, an elderly man sat inside leisurely wearing reading glasses and engrossed in a magazine. Zhang Qiu suddenly felt a pang of melancholy; today's Youth Daily was supposed to feature negative news about Wang Guodong. Unfortunately, Liu Journalist had decided against reporting it. However, Zhang Qiu understood Liu Fangfei; after all, she was a girl who had been through so much—it was understandable that she would feel this way.
In the office of the Beilan County Public Security Bureau, Wang Guodong sat at his desk browsing the day's newspapers, with steam rising from the Ceramic Teapot beside him. He had long maintained a habit of reading the Youth Daily, Urban Report, and Youth Daily. Whenever a new issue came out, Secretary Zhou Guanghai would promptly bring the latest newspapers to Wang Guodong's desk.
Since the incident involving Liu Fangfei, Wang Guodong had changed his reading order. Previously, he would read the Youth Daily first, followed by Urban Report, and finally the Youth Daily again. Now, the first thing he wanted to read was the city's Youth Daily.
As Wang Guodong looked at the Youth Daily, his expression darkened, and his lips twitched. The front-page headline boldly stated, "Shock! Reporter Reports Truth, Only to Be Arrested by Local Authorities!"
Wang Guodong put down the newspaper; Liu Fangfei truly was asking for trouble. Just thinking about their dinner together last night made him angry. If it weren't for Liu Fangfei's connections, he wouldn't have gone easy on a newcomer like her. To keep the peace, he had held back, but now it seemed that Liu Fangfei was determined to push him into a corner.
Wang Guodong picked up the phone on his desk and dialed a number. After a brief conversation, his expression suddenly softened. The tight wrinkles on his forehead relaxed as if smoothed out by a passing vehicle on a muddy road. After hanging up, he called Zhou Guanghai over and pointed at the Youth Daily on the desk. "Take a look at this!"
After reading it, Zhou Guanghai's face also changed dramatically. "How could this happen?"
"You handle this matter," Wang Guodong said coldly.
"Yes, Director. But..." Zhou Guanghai hesitated. The previous incident had already caused negative repercussions. This report directly targeted the Public Security Bureau; how could Director Wang continue down this path? Despite knowing Wang Guodong well, he couldn't understand why Wang was acting this way. Was Director Wang really going to let everything fall apart?
Zhou Guanghai broke out in a cold sweat; if Director Wang fell from grace, he would be finished too.
