Chapter Sixty-Five: The Outburst of the Homeroom Teacher
Director Zhao adjusted his emotions slightly and said slowly, "Stop wasting my time. The decision has been made by the school. If you truly want to study, you can do so at home as well. Go back and pack your textbooks; hurry home. The outcome will be sent to your parents' phones via the School Notification System. Don't stay out too late."
Director Zhao looked at Zhang Qiu and the others, his face filled with helplessness. This year's students were far worse than last year's, especially Zhang Qiu, who was truly a headache. Not only was he involved with some idle individuals from outside—Director Zhao imagined the ruthless Yang Yu and others as social delinquents, not realizing they were merely vocational school students—but he even had connections within the police department. The district chief's secretary had personally called to help Zhang Qiu request leave. Among the other four students, aside from Zhao Pingchuan and Wang Zhengxiang, who were average learners, Yao Yu and Gao Zhi had excellent grades, consistently ranking in the top hundred of their grade. How could such good students be mixed up with Zhang Qiu?
Unaware that Director Zhao was filtering through information about them, Zhang Qiu stopped at the door of the Director's Office and quietly told Gao Zhi and the others, "You guys go back first; I need to talk to the director alone for a bit."
Wang Zhengxiang tugged at Zhang Qiu's arm and said, "Brother Qiu, don't argue anymore; it's useless."
Zhang Qiu smiled and replied, "It's fine; just go ahead."
"Take care, Brother Qiu," Zhao Pingchuan reminded him.
"Don't worry."
After watching them leave, Zhang Qiu closed the door and walked back in. Director Zhao noticed that Zhang Qiu had returned after almost leaving and couldn't help but furrow his brows again, asking, "Why are you back?"
With an innocent expression, Zhang Qiu smiled slightly at the director and said, "Director, I want to know if Zeng Fan's family has put pressure on the school regarding this incident and our handling of it."
Zhang Qiu never expected this matter would escalate so severely. Not only did he receive a major demerit himself, but others would also be implicated because of him. He felt that besides those parents making phone calls, Zeng Fan might also be stirring things up; didn't his family have connections in the Education Bureau? Since he was injured by Zhang Qiu, how could he let it go easily?
Director Zhao's serious gaze fixed on Zhang Qiu; this student gave him an inscrutable feeling. Sometimes Director Zhao thought Zhang Qiu was as naive as a child, but at other times he felt that Zhang Qiu was like a cunning general full of schemes. Indeed, Zeng Fan's family had made some calls; as the grade director, he was well aware of that. But how could he speak the truth about such matters? Director Zhao shook his head.
"Director, I'm heading back now," Zhang Qiu said as he turned to leave.
Director Zhao watched Zhang Qiu walk out of the Director's Office, feeling frustrated once again. The Senior Year had always been the most stable grade due to its unique status. However, this time, with Zhang Qiu, who had connections in both the underworld and legitimate circles; the academically excellent Gao Zhi and Yao Yu; and Zeng Fan, the son of a leader from the Education Bureau, all mixed together, it had led to such a big incident. This left him feeling quite helpless as the director.
Zhao let out a sigh and muttered, "Why do I have to deal with all this?" He hoped that nothing else would happen before the college entrance examination. Otherwise, whether he could continue to lead the Senior Year next year would be a problem.
After returning to the classroom, Zhang Qiu noticed that Gao Zhi and the others were not packing their bags. Xu Qing Chu looked at Zhang Qiu and said, "Go back to your seat and finish this self-study period."
Zhang Qiu nodded at Xu Qing Chu and returned to his seat.
Just as he sat down, still warming his chair, the homeroom teacher Zhao Guohong burst into the room and shouted, "Gao Zhi, Yao Yu, Zhang Qiu... come out here!"
Zhang Qiu and the others exchanged glances and walked toward their homeroom teacher with wry smiles. Last night, Zhao Guohong's phone had died, so she was unaware of the significant incident that had occurred in class. This morning, when she habitually reached for her phone upon waking up, she discovered it had been turned off.
Zhao Guohong grabbed a data cable nearby and plugged it into her phone. Once it powered on, a flood of missed calls appeared on the screen, startling her with how many there were. When she saw that there were over ten missed calls from Director Zhao, she suddenly realized something serious had happened. She hurriedly called Director Zhao back. As soon as the call connected, Director Zhao launched into a barrage of criticism. Zhao Guohong rushed to school without even retrieving her electric vehicle parked downstairs.
In the hallway, Zhao Guohong pointed at Zhang Qiu and the others and said, "Don't you know you're already in Senior Year? Huh? Do you still have time to fight? Is it because there's too little homework or you think you can still do well... Answer me! Don't just stand there like statues."
After Zhao Guohong's scolding, Zhang Qiu and the others admitted their mistakes one after another and promised not to repeat them in the future. Xu Qing Chu also came into the hallway and pulled Zhao Guohong aside, saying, "Don't be so angry; these kids didn't start this trouble on purpose. The school has already given them punishment. Just let it go."
Zhao Guohong remained furious; an incident like this in her class would be discussed throughout Senior Year, not to mention among other homeroom teachers. Although they weren't targeting her specifically, it was still embarrassing to hear their discussions. She felt ashamed to face her colleagues whom she had worked with for years.
Pointing at the instigator of the fight, Zhang Qiu, she yelled, "Zhang Qiu! I don't care if you study or not; you can't affect others! If you delay their review sessions, can you take responsibility for that? Maybe during these few days of reflection, a teacher explained an important exam point that they couldn't grasp because of you! A single point can mean thousands of students' differences in our province; do you understand?"
Zhang Qiu lowered his head and remained silent. It was the first time he had seen Zhao Guohong so angry, and the words spoken were so right that it made Zhang Qiu feel utterly ashamed. If there were a crack in the ground, he would definitely want to hide in it.
"Alright, alright." Xu Qing Chu stepped in to mediate. She pointed at Zhang Qiu and the others and asked, "Do you all recognize your mistakes now?"
"We do." Seeing an opportunity to back down, several of them responded in unison.
"Why aren't you going back? Why are you still here making your class teacher angry?" Xu Qing Chu pretended to be angry again, loudly urging them.
Zhang Qiu and the others felt a sense of relief and began to sneak back to the classroom along the wall. As Zhang Qiu passed by Xu Qing Chu, he cast her a grateful glance.
