Chapter Fifty-Five: The Note That Descended
Zhang Qiu felt a bit shy under Liu Fangfei's gaze and smiled lightly, saying, "Why are you looking at me like that? Come on, I'll treat you to something to eat."
"Okay." Liu Fangfei agreed with a smile, allowing Zhang Qiu to take her to the Auspicious Wontons across the street.
"Welcome!" The boss of the wonton shop greeted Zhang Qiu with a smile upon seeing him.
"I'm here." Zhang Qiu nodded with a smile; he was a regular here.
"Same as usual?" the boss asked.
"Yes, but this time make it double."
"Got it." The boss glanced at Liu Fangfei and nodded with a knowing smile, as if he understood Zhang Qiu well.
"You two seem quite familiar?" Liu Fangfei asked.
"When I didn't want to eat in the cafeteria, I often ordered takeout from this place. Over time, the boss got to know me."
"I see. When I was in school, my family always brought me meals." Zhang Qiu reminisced about Liu Fangfei's high school days.
"Liu Journalist, do you plan to continue reporting on this matter?"
"Of course." Liu Fangfei swung her fist in front of her, her bright eyes filled with determination. After this experience, she understood even more what it meant to be an excellent journalist.
"You are very strong," Zhang Qiu thought sincerely. He had initially believed that Liu Fangfei would give up, but she only grew stronger.
"You too, you really have guts. At the dinner, you dared to talk to the director like that. I truly admire you," Liu Fangfei praised.
"Since we've made it clear that we're going to resist, let's just do it. Those who have nothing to lose aren't afraid of those who do. Things are already like this; how much worse can it get?"
Qiu Wan and Liu Fangfei fell into deep thought again. This kid always managed to surprise her, whether in words or actions.
While waiting for the wontons to finish cooking, Zhang Qiu shared some events that happened while Liu Fangfei was in the detention center. When Liu Fangfei heard that Zhang Qiu's uncle had used connections to take care of her, she couldn't help but think of Wu Xue.
"While I was in the detention center, how could that Female Warden treat me so well? Although she was cold, she made me feel warm. She even let me sit next to her," Liu Fangfei said. Seeing Zhang Qiu's thoughtfulness made her fondness for him grow.
When Zhang Qiu recounted the process of Liu Xiaolong's release, Liu Fangfei became angry and exclaimed, "That's just infuriating!"
"Wontons are here, and here's the dish you wanted," the Boss called out as he came out from the kitchen with a tray. Two bowls of steaming wontons floated in broth, garnished with a few strands of green onions and a light layer of sesame oil on top.
Zhang Qiu thanked the Boss, who smiled and said, "I added two extra for each of you. Eat up." The Boss also reminded Zhang Qiu with a glance to take care of the girl he brought along.
Zhang Qiu smiled knowingly and pushed a bowl of wontons in front of Liu Fangfei, handing her chopsticks. "You must be starving; go ahead and eat."
Liu Fangfei took the chopsticks and said, "Then I won't hold back! I'm really starving; the food inside was terrible."
Liu Fangfei devoured her meal with gusto, yet it did not affect her demeanor at all. Her face turned red from eating, and beads of sweat formed on her nose, leaving Zhang Qiu stunned. He had never seen anyone eat so beautifully before.
"Why are you staring at me?" Liu Fangfei noticed Zhang Qiu looking at her.
Zhang Qiu chuckled and replied, "I ate quite a bit earlier and I'm not very hungry. You should eat more." He then scooped some wontons from his bowl into hers.
After finishing their meal, Liu Fangfei gently wiped the sweat from her forehead and nose with a tissue and softly said, "I was so hungry that I forgot my image; don't mind me."
Zhang Qiu suddenly became serious and said, "Can I say that you look good while eating?"
"Haha, don't tease me," Liu Fangfei laughed.
"Where are you staying tonight? Have you found a place?" Zhang Qiu asked Liu Fangfei.
"I plan to stay at The Last Hotel. I'll head over there soon. You should go back to school; doesn't your homeroom teacher want you back for class?"
Zhang Qiu smiled helplessly, "Yeah, I have to go back to class. It would be great if I could just go home."
Liu Fangfei affectionately patted Zhang Qiu's head and said earnestly, "Cherish your student days. You must study hard; only through learning can you change your destiny."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu nodded firmly.
"Let's go," Liu Fangfei suggested.
Zhang Qiu glanced at the clock on the wall and said, "Alright, let's go."
"Take care!" As Zhang Qiu and Liu Fangfei stood up to leave, the Boss's voice squeezed through the door crack and reached their ears.
Zhang Qiu and Liu Fangfei parted ways at the intersection, with Liu Fangfei heading east towards the hotel and Zhang Qiu walking straight back to school.
The old man at the guardhouse asked Zhang Qiu upon her return, "Why are you back so late? Your leave request didn't cover this long of a time."
Zhang Qiu smiled apologetically and said, "Sorry, sir. I got held up by something. I called the principal to extend my time, and our homeroom teacher is aware of it. As a proud One Middle School Student, I assure you that I will pay attention next time and will never be late again."
The Gatekeeper Uncle chuckled at Zhang Qiu's response and waved his hand, saying, "Go on, go on. Just remember to return on time in the future."
After returning from leave, Zhang Qiu quickly walked back to the teaching building and first went to the Director's Office. Director Zhao smiled and greeted him, "You're back?"
Zhang Qiu noticed that Director Zhao's tone and attitude were quite different from before, but he didn't think much of it and responded with a smile, "I'm back. Thank you this time, Director Zhao."
Director Zhao chuckled, "Alright, go back to class and study. I've discussed your leave with your homeroom teacher."
"Okay." Zhang Qiu turned to leave, closing the door of the Director's Office behind him.
Standing at the back door of the classroom, Zhang Qiu looked inside through the window. There was no teacher at the podium, and most of his classmates were focused on their studies. A few students at the back who were fooling around straightened up when they noticed someone at the back door, staring intently at their desks.
Zhang Qiu walked around to the front door, took out his phone from his pocket, set it to silent mode, and then gently pushed the door open. Eyes from all directions discreetly observed the person entering. When they realized it wasn't a teacher, they relaxed. Zhang Qiu nodded in response to Jiang Xue's smile.
Just as Zhang Qiu returned to his seat and took out his things, a piece of paper fell from above and landed right on his head.
He looked up to see Gao Zhi staring at him intently. Confused, Zhang Qiu picked up the paper from the floor and opened it, only to furrow his brow tightly.
The note read: "Someone is out to get you."
