Chapter 48: The Phone Call in Math Class
Zhang Qiu was in class when his phone suddenly vibrated in his pocket. He focused intently on the math teacher at the front of the room, who spoke fluently as if reciting poetry, explaining complex steps.
Noticing that the teacher was completely absorbed in teaching, Zhang Qiu cautiously took out his phone. It was an unknown number. Who could be calling him?
He felt embarrassed to interrupt the math teacher's lecture, but the call couldn't be ignored. Zhang Qiu stood up and walked to the front row, slightly bowing to the teacher at the board, saying, "Teacher, I need to go to the restroom."
"Go ahead," the math teacher replied quickly without turning around, fully immersed in his work.
Once outside the classroom, Zhang Qiu hurried downstairs before answering the call. He was worried about being spotted by the teacher or a supervising principal in the hallway; that would be disastrous.
"Hello, may I ask who this is?"
"Is this Zhang Qiu?"
Hearing Liu Fangfei's voice on the other end filled Zhang Qiu with excitement. He quickly responded, "Yes, it's me, Liu Journalist. Where are you now? How are you?"
Liu Fangfei replied, "I'm fine. They're going to release me now. When I get to Beilan County, can you come pick me up?" Although her family would come to get her, she still wanted to reach out to Zhang Qiu for updates on what had happened; it was her responsibility as a journalist. Besides, being with Zhou Guanghai and his group made her feel uneasy.
"They're releasing you?" Zhang Qiu was taken aback; he hadn't expected it to happen so soon. He quickly said, "That's great news! I'll come pick you up; don't worry."
This outcome surprised Zhang Qiu. He had thought his uncle could only lessen Liu Journalist's suffering but never imagined she would be released outright. It seemed his uncle wasn't as powerless as he had thought.
"After a while, come to Beilan Grand Hotel to find me. I'll be waiting for you; you must come," Liu Fangfei said, her voice trembling slightly as all her grievances surged forth.
Zhang Qiu could tell Liu Journalist was on the verge of tears and hurriedly reassured her, "Don't worry; I will definitely come pick you up."
After hanging up, Zhang Qiu let out a sigh of relief and called He Jun. Once connected, he said, "Uncle, thank you! Liu Journalist just called me; she has been released."
He Jun paused for a moment, surprised by this unexpected outcome. He knew he didn't have that kind of influence, and Wang Guodong wouldn't just let someone go like that. It seemed this journalist was not simple at all. After some contemplation, he calmly replied, "I see. By the way, aren't you supposed to be in school today?"
"I brought my phone; it's a special time," Zhang Qiu explained.
He Jun then reminded him, "Since Liu Journalist is safe now, there's nothing else to worry about. You shouldn't carry your phone around; focus on your studies."
"Alright," Zhang Qiu replied.
Originally, Zhang Qiu wanted to tell his uncle Liu Fangfei that he would go pick her up, but after He Jun's comment, Zhang Qiu dismissed the idea. Adults think differently from children; perhaps his uncle believed he could handle the upcoming situation on his own. However, Zhang Qiu felt otherwise.
Life is a long journey filled with various challenges. To remain safe and sound, there is only one way—make oneself strong.
Zhang Qiu went to the Director's Office to request leave to pick up Liu Fangfei. Fortunately, having discovered Director Zhao's secret earlier made this task less complicated, though requesting leave was still quite troublesome. Zhang Qiu knocked on the door and entered after receiving permission.
Seeing Zhang Qiu, Director Zhao's expression was noticeably awkward. Zhang Qiu remained calm and cheerfully said to Director Zhao, "Director, I would like to request leave."
Director Zhao asked, "Do you have a leave note signed by your homeroom teacher?"
"I'll only be out for a short while and can return before evening study. So, I didn't go to my homeroom teacher and wanted to ask you directly," Zhang Qiu explained.
Director Zhao looked up at Zhang Qiu and asked, "What are you going to do?"
"I'm going to pick up a reporter," Zhang Qiu replied honestly.
"What do you mean!" Director Zhao suddenly sat up straight, every hair on his body standing on end. He had a vague feeling that Zhang Qiu was about to get himself into trouble again. Dealing with such a student was truly unfortunate for him.
"It's just a friend of mine; she's arriving soon, and I'm just going to pick her up," Zhang Qiu clarified.
Director Zhao looked skeptical; the leave note was right in front of him, yet he showed no intention of taking it.
Zhang Qiu felt anxious but helpless; he couldn't directly threaten the director. At that moment, Director Zhao's phone rang. After answering it with a couple of "hmms," his expression turned tense as he stood up to leave.
Zhang Qiu quickly grabbed the leave note from the desk and handed it to the director, saying, "Director Zhao, my leave..."
Director Zhao took it, quickly signed his name with a few strokes, and hurriedly said, "Come back early," before rushing out.
Watching Director Zhao's departing figure, Zhang Qiu quietly murmured, "Thank you, Director." Given how flustered he seemed, something significant must be happening. Zhang Qiu recalled various news from school recently but couldn't remember anything major occurring.
Having obtained the leave note, Zhang Qiu decided to return to the classroom since he had claimed he was going to the restroom; leaving without explanation would not be appropriate. More importantly, there was still an hour until Liu Fangfei arrived, so he could easily make it after class.
When Zhang Qiu returned to the classroom, the math teacher was still lecturing. He quietly walked back to his seat without interrupting. Taking advantage of a pause in the teacher's lecture, Zhang Qiu leaned over and whispered to Wang Zhengxiang, "Classmate, if the next teacher asks about me, just say I took leave."
"You are skipping class!" Wang Zhengxiang stared wide-eyed at Zhang Qiu.
Zhang Qiu waved the signed leave slip in front of Wang Zhengxiang and smiled, "Don't talk nonsense, Brother Qiu has proper procedures."
Wang Zhengxiang took the leave slip and examined it closely; it was indeed in Grade Director Zhao's handwriting. Wang Zhengxiang asked, "What are you going to do?"
Zhang Qiu chuckled, "I'm going to pick up a big sister."
"Nice, a May-December romance," Wang Zhengxiang gave Zhang Qiu a thumbs up.
Zhang Qiu rolled his eyes at Wang Zhengxiang and said, "What are you thinking? I'm going to do something important. When the time is right, I'll tell you." Zhang Qiu didn't want his deskmate to know too much; some things shouldn't be brought to light. Others only need to see the results; as for the process, there was no need for them to know.
Wang Zhengxiang stared at Zhang Qiu with a strange expression and said, "Deskmate, you've become more mysterious lately. If you become awesome, don't forget about me, your deskmate."
"Of course not, you're my good deskmate," Zhang Qiu replied sincerely.
During their last semester of senior year, they had helped and encouraged each other a lot. Of course, more often than not, it was while the other was sleeping that they helped guard against the teachers.
