Chapter Thirty-Three: I Am Willing to Bet Once 0

After Zhang Qiu and Wang Jinghan left, Liu Fangfei also picked up her bag and returned to the hotel. It was a dimly lit double room, and from the window, she could see Beiluan No. 1 Middle School. The lights in several teaching buildings were already off, with only a few offices occasionally showing white light from their windows. The streetlights on both sides emitted a soft yellow glow, partially obscured by the newly sprouted willow trees. The shadows of the trees danced gently, creating a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. 0

Liu Fangfei ordered a cup of coffee from the waiter, opened her laptop, and sat down at the desk to start brainstorming. Gradually, a rough idea began to form in her mind. Liu Fangfei's fingers flew across the keyboard, and with a series of clicking sounds, lines of text appeared in the document. After finishing her draft, she planned to send it back to the News Agency immediately, hoping it would be published by tomorrow morning. 0

Zhang Qiu returned home to find his parents still awake, sitting in the living room watching TV while waiting for him. On the dining table, there was a bowl of egg fried rice. He Mei stood up when she heard the door open and said as Zhang Qiu entered, "You're back! You must be hungry; I made you a bowl of fried rice. Eat before you rest." 0

Zhang Qiu smiled slightly and replied, "Sure." He first went to his room to charge his phone before returning to the dining table. After sitting down, he ate heartily; he had important things to do afterward. In just a few minutes, Zhang Qiu finished the rice in his bowl, took it to the kitchen to wash it, and after greeting his parents, he returned to his room. 0

His phone had charged for a while when Zhang Qiu pressed the power button to turn it on. To his surprise, there were ten missed calls: two from He Jun, one from Wang Jinghan, two from Chen Kun, and five from Yang Yu. Zhang Qiu couldn't help but shake his head, lamenting how busy things had become. 0

He first called He Jun's number. After a few rings, a serious voice came through: "How's everything going?" 0

"Everything is going smoothly," Zhang Qiu replied calmly. 0

"That's good. Get some rest early," He Jun said without saying much more. As things progressed to this point, he felt increasingly confident; success seemed just around the corner. He Jun stood up and walked toward the interrogation room; tonight he planned to work an extra shift... 0

After ending the call with He Jun, Zhang Qiu immediately called Yang Yu. As soon as Yang Yu answered, he asked anxiously, "Brother Qiu, are you okay?" His voice sounded urgent, clearly worried about him. 0

"I'm fine; thank my brothers for me," Zhang Qiu instructed. "Also, you all need to keep a low profile for now until this period passes." 0

"Okay." Yang Yu paused for a moment and then said, "By the way, Brother Qiu, there's something I need to discuss with you." 0

"What is it?" Zhang Qiu's heart skipped a beat. Today's events seemed well-planned, but there were significant flaws beneath the surface. The complexities of human nature meant that things could never run as smoothly as a machine. He was most worried about any potential problems arising. 0

Noticing Zhang Qiu's anxiety, Yang Yu quickly explained, "Brother Qiu, don't worry. What I want to talk about is a good thing. We all unanimously decided to recognize you as our leader." 0

"That won't do. They are all your people; I just need your help when I have something going on," Zhang Qiu quickly declined. He didn't want to take his good friend's position. 0

Yang Yu continued, "This is a unanimous decision. You have the courage, and I believe you can do better than I can. Besides, you were my leader back in middle school." 0

Zhang Qiu fell silent for a moment before slowly saying, "Listen to me; the leadership is still yours. These brothers have always been under your management. First, you are familiar with them, and you have their respect. Second, I have other matters to attend to. Since we are doing this, we should do it well and make it bigger. I believe you are more suitable than I am." 0

"Alright." There was a hint of disappointment in Yang Yu's voice. "Then let's do it this way: we will still call you the leader in name, but I will handle the operations. How does that sound?" 0

Before Zhang Qiu could respond, Yang Yu added, "Brother Qiu, if you keep refusing, it will just drag on." 0

Zhang Qiu smiled helplessly, understanding that Yang Yu meant well. He sighed and said, "Fine then, let's do it this way for now..." 0

After finishing the call with Yang Yu, Zhang Qiu dialed Wang Jinghan's number. Upon learning that Wang Jinghan had already arrived home, Zhang Qiu felt relieved. The two chatted casually for a while before saying goodnight to each other. 0

Zhang Qiu glanced at the time; he had spent a full hour on these three calls. It was already ten forty, and he still hadn't contacted Chen Kun. Zhang Qiu dialed again. At this hour, most people would likely be asleep. However, Chen Kun, being in college, probably wasn't. 0

Sure enough, not long after the call connected, Chen Kun answered. There was a noisy background on the other end; people were arguing. But the noise gradually faded until it was no longer audible—likely because Chen Kun had moved to a quieter spot. 0

"Your phone was off, you scared me! I thought something happened to you," Chen Kun said, his tense nerves finally relaxing. If something happened to his good brother, he would have no one to confide in. 0

"I'm fine," Zhang Qiu replied lightly, then detailed everything that had happened to Chen Kun. Although Zhang Qiu remained calm, Chen Kun on the other end of the line was already feeling anxious. This was too outrageous; it was not easy to take down Police Chief Wang Guodong. If this plan failed, a lot of people would suffer the consequences. 0

"What you’re doing is much more serious than just dealing with that person." 0

Zhang Qiu understood this principle well, but he didn't want to live a life of submission. "I have no choice. To avoid living in humiliation in the future, I must become strong." After a pause, Zhang Qiu added, "This situation might not be a bad opportunity; I'm willing to take the gamble." 0

After a long moment, Chen Kun finally said, "I support you." 0

Zhang Qiu smiled; those four words were enough to cover everything. This was the bond of brotherhood. 0
