Chapter Sixteen: Seeking Refuge
Zhang Qiu dialed Yang Yu's number to inform him of his decision to cancel the evening's plans. At first, Yang Yu didn't understand, but after Zhang Qiu explained the reasons, Yang Yu fell silent for a moment before saying, "Brother Qiu, I trust your judgment. You're someone who handles big matters. Just let me know when you want to go, and I'll be there for you anytime!"
"Thank you, brother." Zhang Qiu felt a wave of gratitude; it's hard to express how much it means to have a friend like that.
After hanging up, Zhang Qiu sat up, feeling a sense of loss. He had been excited about avenging his father, but now the situation was such that he couldn't take action. Zhang Qiu resolved in his heart that he needed to become stronger and improve his abilities; that was the most important thing.
With a goal in mind, Zhang Qiu felt a bit better. He thought that since he wasn't going to fight, perhaps he should return to class in the afternoon. After thinking for a while, he decided to go back anyway. First, since he had already missed today, if he suddenly showed up later, Director Zhao might think something was off and it could affect him. Second, when Zhang Qiu visited the hospital yesterday, he hadn't seen Wang Jinghan, and he missed her. She hadn't replied to his QQ message, so he planned to visit the hospital again. After all, Zhang Qiu couldn't stay at home waiting until evening to return; otherwise, his family would find out about his punishment.
Having made up his mind, Zhang Qiu grabbed a book and his phone charger before heading out. On the way, he passed by a supermarket and bought juice and chips; he vaguely remembered that Wang Jinghan often had a bag of tomato-flavored chips on her desk in middle school.
Zhang Qiu locked his electric vehicle in the hospital parking lot and headed straight for the lobby with his shopping bag. As he pushed open the door and entered, he looked toward the front desk. In just one glance, he spotted Wang Jinghan sitting there seriously. She noticed him too and smiled lightly as she saw him approach. When Zhang Qiu reached her, Wang Jinghan asked, "Here to see your uncle?"
"No! I'm here to see you," Zhang Qiu replied as he handed her the juice. "My dad was discharged yesterday; I guess you didn't check QQ?"
Wang Jinghan gave a wry smile and said, "I turned my phone off." She took the juice with a sweet "thank you" and added, "It's good that he's out; resting at home is actually better than in the hospital. The atmosphere here is only suitable for treating illnesses but not for recovery. By the way, what's going on with you?"
"I ran into some trouble and can't go home until tonight. But I really have nowhere else to go; I hope you don't mind me coming here," Zhang Qiu said sheepishly as he scratched his head. Indeed, all his friends were students, so he really had nowhere else to turn.
"I don't mind at all! Just know that I won't have time to hang out with you," Wang Jinghan replied as she glanced at the time. "I finish work at five; that's still three hours away. I need to work, so you can entertain yourself for a while, okay?"
"Of course! I'm prepared," Zhang Qiu said as he waved the book titled Silent Confession in his hand.
Zhang Qiu found a spot at the edge of a row of chairs outside the corridor and began reading "Silent Confession." He had already read two-thirds of it. At first, he was just curious about why Lydia died. Later, he discovered something deeper that captivated him—searching for his true thoughts.
Marilyn had always imposed her dreams on her daughter Lydia in the name of allowing her to do what she liked. Concerned about losing her mother again, Lydia forced a smile and accepted all the arrangements she disliked. Jack's love for Hans gave Lydia the courage to refuse, but this courage also came with the cost of death. Lydia's death made everyone around her realize their true selves.
As Zhang Qiu immersed himself in the story, he heard Wang Jinghan's loud voice, sounding angry. He looked up to see a boy about his age standing at the counter, grinning and saying something to Wang Jinghan. In contrast, Wang Jinghan looked annoyed, with anger in her eyes. Zhang Qiu closed the book, stood up, and walked over.
