"Don't struggle, I'll pull you up!"
The deep voice of the man, which had been faintly heard before, rang out again, this time clear and close at hand.
Bu Huo opened his eyes and saw the high sky above, with a fierce giant beast below him and the figure of a man. This unfamiliar man had conjured an energy rope that wrapped around Bu Huo's waist. As he looked up, the man suddenly yanked upward.
A pulling force descended upon him. Bu Huo's gaze flickered; he did not resist and allowed his body to rise with the force. Just as he was nearing the fierce lizard, he thrust out his right hand and grabbed one of the thick claws of the Two-Headed Lizard. He then used the momentum to perform a flip, landing steadily on the sturdy back of the Two-Headed Lizard, facing the unfamiliar man.
"Thank you, sir!" Bu Huo said respectfully, placing his hand over his chest in salute. Although he did not know why the man had saved him, he remembered this act of kindness.
"No need to be so polite. I have my reasons for saving you. My name is Rondo. Now hurry and save your companion; I hope it's not too late."
Rondo waved his hand and took out a massive Broad Sword from his Storage Bracelet, directing the Two-Headed Lizard toward the countless grass shadows surrounding Hong Lian.
"I will launch an attack to temporarily draw the attention of these crimson Sharp Grass. You take this opportunity to rescue your companion. I trust you know what to do," Rondo said as his Broad Sword emitted a humming sound, waves of powerful energy radiating from it. The sword, over two meters long, shone with lightning-like colors.
Bu Shuang narrowed his eyes slightly, having formed a rough estimate of Rondo's strength. As for Rondo's reason for saving him, Bu Shuang was not surprised; after all, truly benevolent people are rare. More often than not, people like Rondo seek to repay favors.
"This person's strength seems to be around Intermediate Level 5; he has not reached the peak of Intermediate Level 5. He is not much different from Gnar, who was defeated by Hong Lian at the Gravity Training Ground. However, Gnar was not wearing any Amplification Equipment at that time, unlike Rondo."
Boom!
As Bu Shuang pondered these thoughts, Rondo had already driven the Two-Headed Lizard closer to where Hong Lian was located. He raised his Broad Sword high and swung it downwards, unleashing a massive Sword Aura made of condensed energy that crackled with purple lightning as it sliced through the encroaching Sharp Grass.
"Thunder Slash!"
A thunderous explosion erupted from within the dark mass of Sharp Grass. After a deafening sound, the giant sword shattered; purple lightning danced around as blinding light erupted forth. The Sharp Grass surrounding Hong Lian began to collapse in droves, revealing gaps through which chaotic energy surged.
Bu Shuang's gaze sharpened; seizing the moment when these Tall Grass were momentarily slowed by the widespread attack, he wasted no time in launching an energy rope that shot out and wrapped around Hong Lian's wrist as she fell after losing her cover from the Tall Grass.
"Good! Pull her up; we need to retreat!" Rondo exhaled deeply as he retracted his Broad Sword and urged the Two-Headed Lizard to ascend further. However, at that moment, a distant Flute Sound floated through the air. Upon hearing it, Rondo's expression changed drastically; there was an unmistakable hint of panic in his eyes.
Noticing Rondo's unusual reaction, Bu Shuang felt surprised but focused on pulling Hong Lian up. Just then, the ethereal melody of the Flute Sound shifted abruptly. With Rondo's furious shout, what had once been a distant tune transformed into sounds of clashing weapons that pierced their ears with a subtle pain, seemingly containing some form of mental attack.
"Eve!" Rondo's furious roar echoed far and wide, and the Two-Headed Lizard beneath him suddenly changed from its usual docile demeanor, going wild and emitting a piercing howl as it shook its head. Its wings flapped uncontrollably, threatening to lose balance and crash to the ground.
"Damn it, quickly, release your Mental Power to form a mental barrier and weaken the invasion of this Flute Sound. Otherwise, my Contract Beast will surely be bewitched by the Flute Sound, and when it falls into the Crimson Prairie, we will all die." Rondo's expression was frantic as he shouted anxiously at Bu. After speaking, he released his own Mental Power, enveloping the two heads of the Two-Headed Lizard to create a barrier while trying to soothe it.
"A mental barrier?" Bu was somewhat puzzled but still followed suit, releasing his own Mental Power that spread towards the two heads of the Two-Headed Lizard. At the same time, Hong Lian, who had already climbed onto the back of the Two-Headed Lizard, also sent out a wave of Mental Power to cover it.
As the Mental Power overflowed, Bu immediately sensed something was wrong. Normally, when Mental Power overflowed from his body, although it would consume some energy, the rate of consumption was not fast. However, now his Mental Power was depleting at a rate ten times greater than usual just after overflowing. At this rate of consumption, in less than a minute, his already meager Mental Power would soon run dry.
Bu Mei frowned deeply, feeling quite troubled. Compared to him, Hong Lian's abundant Mental Power could withstand this rate of consumption for about ten minutes. But this strange situation was something Bu had never encountered before, leaving him feeling uncertain.
"It must be this Flute Sound that's causing the problem. This Flute Sound is a sophisticated mental attack method that can bewitch Contract Beasts and drive them mad. Such a method might not be significant under normal circumstances, but right now it is deadly. Perhaps this Flute Sound does not cause much harm to humans or is not specifically targeting us."
With Hong Lian's strong Mental Power, even without having learned similar mental attack techniques like this Flute Sound, he could still hold out for a long time against its interference and was not afraid of its targeted assault; it was just a troublesome situation at present.
While pondering this, Bu had yet to come up with a solution when suddenly the Flute Sound grew even more intense. The sound of clashing weapons felt like an army pressing in on them; the thick mist began to thin under the spread of this Flute Sound. Bu felt a buzzing in his mind and dizziness in his vision as his faint thread of Mental Power flickered out like a candle in the wind.
"Roar!" The Two-Headed Lizard let out a mournful wail as both of its heads bled from all seven orifices. Its massive body spun wildly and plummeted downward.
"Damn it! Eve! I won't let you get away with this!" Rondo's face showed unwillingness and resentment. At the moment the Two-Headed Lizard began to fall, he leaped up fiercely, trying to glide away from the range of the Crimson Prairie.
"Run!"
Bu and Hong Lian jumped high off the Two-Headed Lizard's back. Step Nine activated as they dodged attacks from Sharp Grass rising from the ground. However, compared to their luck, the now uncontrollable Two-Headed Lizard could not escape its fate; its massive body gradually fell and became entangled and pierced by countless protruding Sharp Grass, blood splattering everywhere.
The chilling howls echoed across the vast prairie as the Two-Headed Lizard's enormous body was pierced by numerous Sharp Grass blades like a brush. Bu and Hong Lian took another step forward into the air and watched helplessly at the horrific scene below them, their hearts filled with lingering fear.
"Blood... blood... blood..."
Strange murmurs faintly emanated from deep within the prairie. At that moment, Rondo's face turned pale. He had not learned any skills for aerial movement; now that his gliding momentum was fading away, his body uncontrollably began to fall. A long wail filled with endless sorrow escaped his lips as despair filled Rondo's eyes—a despair born from fear of death and longing for life; an extreme unwillingness surged within him.
"What’s happening?" Bu clearly heard the murmurs coming from deep within the prairie. His heart skipped a beat as he felt a tingling sensation on his scalp and an ominous premonition washed over him.
Rustle... rustle... rustle...
The sound of waves rose and fell, a strange noise as the leaves were blown by the wind spread out. This sound initially came from deep within the prairie, gradually extending outward, permeating the entire Crimson Prairie. Like a gust of wind passing through, countless Tall Grass swayed and undulated, their dark green surfaces shifting.
In what felt like an instant, yet also seemed to stretch for a long time, when he once again looked down at the scene below, his heart trembled, his mind buzzed, and his eyes were filled with shock.
At that moment, the prairie appeared as if the earth had seeped blood; countless crimson lines writhed and intertwined. From a distance, it looked like a sea of blood. This red did not present vibrant colors to the eye but instead exuded an endless chill that made one gasp in fear while simultaneously giving rise to profound dread within.
“Crimson Prairie,” he thought as his pupils contracted. The shock within him spread along with the scarlet hue in his vision, transforming the entire prairie into a bloody expanse. The thick scent of blood surged forth, leaving his mind in turmoil.
“Eve! You wretched woman!” A mournful roar jolted him awake. He quickly took a step forward, ascending slightly higher. This step was also the third step in Step Nine, the last step he could take in mid-air at this stage. As he landed this step, he turned to look down.
He saw Rondo's body engulfed by the crimson Tall Grass. This scene struck him like an endless sea of blood rolling waves over a drowning soul. No matter how desperately this drowning person struggled or how loudly they cried out for life and resisted fate, they could not withstand the overwhelming force of the ocean. After one wave crashed, there were deeper and more terrifying currents waiting.
“Red Lotus, come back!”
Terror! An unprecedented terror!
Even the appearance of Star God Ethan had not brought him such profound shock as he felt now. The endless scarlet that filled his vision easily killed Rondo as if crushing an ant underfoot. The lingering scent of blood made his scalp tingle; he could no longer afford to hide his abilities. He needed to unleash Bloodline Transformation and escape this forbidden zone of life!
