After a while, feeling the car gradually come to a stop, Mu Miaomiao pulled the handbrake and calmly asked, "Do you know?"
I lifted my head from my arms, turned around, and could clearly see the entrance of the vegetable market behind Mu Miaomiao. It was bustling with people of all kinds. Just two days ago, I was like them, haggling with vendors over the prices of vegetables.
My voice was even calmer than Mu Miaomiao's. "Yeah, I know."
"How did you find out?"
Only then did I take out the package containing Deng Xiaomei's items from my bag and handed it to Mu Miaomiao. After she received it, a sneer appeared on her lips as she tore open the package without a second thought.
I felt both angry and anxious at that moment; I had just put the package in my bag without thinking of opening it. I didn't know what was inside, nor did I want to find out.
But as Mu Miaomiao cleared the contents of the package, she tossed aside the outer wrapping and her eyes flickered for a moment before she handed me what was inside.
It was a piece of sexy lingerie.
What does a three-month-pregnant Deng Xiaomei need sexy lingerie for? The black lingerie had only a few intricate lines holding it together, with large areas of lace creating a revealing effect, even leaving intentional gaps in key places.
Looking at it now made me feel nauseous. Would Wang Xu rather be with a pregnant woman than try again with me?
"The house was bought three months ago. That woman actually moved in a few days ago; she just hasn't finished unpacking yet, so she occasionally appears in our neighborhood. The apartment downstairs is handled by a friend of Wang Nan's, paid in full, under Deng Xiaomei's name."
I nodded numbly, feeling as if my body were just an empty shell. "Heh."
It's ridiculous that three months ago I mentioned this to Wang Xu. I mysteriously told him that a wealthy person had moved in downstairs; given today's market prices for houses, even second-hand ones cost at least 1.2 million.
Wang Xu jokingly teased me about being obsessed with money, saying my eyes lit up whenever money was mentioned. Looking back now, I really did light up at the thought of 1.2 million.
When we bought this house, we only made a down payment and have been paying off 3,000 each month until now without finishing. But Deng Xiaomei's house was bought outright. Wang Xu and I scrimped and saved just to manage that 3,000 loan each month while hoping to save more to invest in the stock market. I had asked Wang Xu how the market was doing; he simply said it was so-so.
I wondered how "so-so" could allow Deng Xiaomei to buy a house worth 1.2 million.
"I don't know how that woman met your husband, but her reputation isn't good; her previous job wasn't clean either—she's one of those women who make money working night shifts," Mu Miaomiao said disdainfully. Seeing my face turn pale, she sighed lightly and softened her tone. "It's up to you how to choose; no matter what you decide, I'll support you."
I forced a smile and said, "Miao Miao, do I still have a choice?"
"You do," Mu Miaomiao replied firmly. "First, tell me, do you plan to continue living with Wang Xu?"
At that moment, I felt utterly desperate, yet after Mu Miaomiao's words, I hesitated and said, "I don't know."
"Zhuang Jun!" Mu Miaomiao exclaimed excitedly. "You need to understand that this is about your future. Think it through carefully!"
"I want to see her."
One thing leads to another; I wanted to know why it was her and how long she would be around, from moving into the apartment below mine to taking over my home.
How much longer until I have to pack my things for her? First, she took my husband and moved into 402; next, she would be in 502, right? And then where would it end—my room, my bed?
Just the thought of Wang Xu rolling in bed with Deng Xiaomei when I wasn't aware made me feel nauseous.
"Alright, let's get out."
Without voicing any objections to my thoughts, Mu Miaomiao turned off the engine and got out of the car. I had no choice but to follow her. She led me into a market and stopped at a farm shop, asking the boss for a dead duck. The dead duck was hanging from Mu Miaomiao's hand, its round eyes staring blankly; it looked extremely bizarre. I had never stared at a dead bird's eyes for so long before, and the longer I looked, the more terrified I felt.
Mu Miaomiao took me to her boyfriend Wang Nan's house. Wang Nan claimed to be in real estate but was actually a high-ranking official with an apartment in the city center and even hired a maid. Mu Miaomiao used Wang Nan's key to open the door and called out "Auntie." A plain-looking middle-aged woman came out from inside. Mu Miaomiao handed her the dead duck.
"Auntie, could you please stew this for me? Just make sure it's cooked through. Oh, and add plenty of oil—heavy oil. Thank you!" Mu Miaomiao smiled sweetly as the aunt nodded and took the duck into the kitchen.
I still didn't know what I was supposed to do. Mu Miaomiao reassured me, "Zhuang Jun, come on, let's sit on the balcony and soak up some sun while we wait for the duck to cook."
Although I didn't understand what was going on, I felt completely at ease with Mu Miaomiao and followed her to sit on the balcony. The warm sunlight poured down on us, and instinctively, I squinted my eyes. My eyes were already swollen from crying and now they wouldn't open at all.
Mu Miaomiao came out of the room carrying a makeup bag without saying a word and began applying makeup on my face. I wanted to refuse but she insisted, "Zhuang Jun, don't move around! You're going into battle now; you can't afford to mess up at a critical moment."
I understood what Mu Miaomiao meant but didn't grasp her reasoning: "What does this have to do with makeup?"
Mu Miaomiao sighed and said, "Aren't we going to meet that woman? We're going to confront her soon."
"Now?"
"After the soup is ready."
"Why are we making soup?"
"To send it to her, to help her with the pregnancy."
I excitedly grabbed Mu Miaomiao's arm. "Miao Miao, don't do anything reckless."
Mu Miaomiao casually brushed my hand away and focused on shaping my eyebrows again. "Don't worry, how could I do anything reckless? No poison, no drugs; I can't afford a double tragedy. She's not that kind of person. Just help her replenish her health, and you can stay spirited."
I sighed in relief. With Mu Miaomiao's promise, I didn't have to worry. She knows her limits. I was anxious because I feared Mu Miaomiao would take extreme measures. It's ridiculous that I'm the one who was cheated on, yet I'm making my best friend worry more.
Mu Miaomiao seemed to sense my feelings too; she joked, "Hey, Zhuang Jun, isn't this like the emperor being anxious while the eunuch is calm? You're just emotionally dull, sitting there like a statue. When you go back, who knows how you'll cry? Just don't cry; I'll handle everything. Don't worry too much."
I know; I've always known. That's why I rely on Miao Miao so much in these awkward moments.
