Two days later, Mu Miaomiao called me, insisting that we meet in person. It was a Sunday, and my mother-in-law might come over, so I was worried about running into her. I arranged to meet Mu Miaomiao at a café outside. Shortly after I arrived, Mu Miaomiao showed up.
She didn’t order anything and handed me the B-Scan Report with a serious expression. "I found out everything."
Seeing her expression felt like a heavy stone pressing down on my heart, making it hard to breathe. I urged her to speak quickly. Mu Miaomiao opened the B-Scan Report, revealing several characters written in an elaborate style that I couldn’t understand. I turned my gaze back to her.
I felt a mix of tension and panic. My fists slowly clenched, and every second of waiting felt like torture.
"That woman, named Deng Xiaomei, does live in our neighborhood but rarely shows up. My aunt said she looks quite alluring and doesn’t seem pregnant. Whenever she appears, she’s heavily made up and doesn’t interact with anyone or invite people over, so not many have gotten close to her, and her background is still unclear."
I was anxious and pointed at the B-Scan Report. "What do these characters mean?"
"This," Mu Miaomiao's gaze also fell on the B-Scan Report. "This is information I got from a doctor through a nurse friend at this hospital. The doctor refused to disclose anything directly but mentioned some details related to the fetus."
"What details?"
"The fetus is already three months along."
I tried to suppress the turmoil inside me, but Mu Miaomiao's words sent a chill through me.
Three months—how ironic memories can be. Three months ago, Wang Xu was on a business trip for a week. After all, he had never been away from home for such a long time while I had been gone; that's why I remembered it so clearly.
What a coincidence indeed.
"Is there anything else?"
"The fetus and the adult are both fine. Also, since it happened a couple of days ago, an elderly person accompanied her. The elderly person insisted on giving her a bag of food, and when she refused, the elderly person was unhappy about it. So she has a bit of an impression, but she's not sure if she remembers correctly."
I took a deep breath, already having another answer in my mind: "What kind of food?"
"It seems like... longan or something."
I slowly closed my eyes. Before I received Miao Miao's answer, I had a premonition. I was afraid to know the answer and afraid not to know it. It seemed that everything was aligning...
"Is there anything else?"
My heart felt numb with pain, but I was sure there was something more that made Mu Miaomiao feel the evidence was so solid that when she first met me, she didn't excitedly tell me it was all a misunderstanding.
What lay before me was a chess game with an obvious outcome. I stared at it for a long time; it wasn't that I didn't understand, but that I was afraid.
"I told you, Zhuang Jun, don't get too excited. Let's discuss and solve this together, okay?" Mu Miaomiao hesitated.
"It's fine, just tell me." Since it was almost certain, I wanted to know what could make Miao Miao hesitate to speak.
"Deng Xiaomei is renting a place in our neighborhood, but my Aunt found out that she recently bought a house. She seemed very happy about it, but she wouldn't reveal the address no matter what. However, after my Aunt chatted with her for a bit, she accidentally let something slip."
"Where?"
Mu Miaomiao's words became the last straw, either saving me or crushing the camel. I actually held onto a glimmer of hope amidst several solid pieces of evidence and Mu Miaomiao's ugly expression.
I believed in Wang Xu, in our six years of unwavering love, and that marriage was merely a matter between two people.
But what Mu Miaomiao said nearly killed me.
"In your neighborhood."
