I was holding a B-Scan Report in my hand, and there was a dark mass in the middle. If it weren't for the text description below, I wouldn't have known what the image depicted at all.
"Enlarged uterine cavity with a formed fetus... fetus?!"
I was startled. Looking again at the name on the report, "Deng Xiaomei"? I couldn't recall anyone by that name, even after going through it several times in my mind. My mother-in-law hasn't been out much since coming to S City, and I hadn't heard of her socializing with anyone. I know most of my husband's colleagues, and none of them are named Deng Xiaomei.
So how did this Deng Xiaomei's B-Scan Report end up in my mother-in-law's wallet? I felt around the wallet but found nothing else. Looking back at Deng Xiaomei's information, she was only twenty years old, making it even less likely that she was someone my mother-in-law knew. Who on earth was she?
After putting the B-Scan Report into a small box in the nightstand where I keep miscellaneous items, I finally washed my mother-in-law's clothes. I planned to wait until Wang Xu came home that evening to ask him about it. If she was indeed someone my mother-in-law knew, I could return it to her.
The whole day, I spent at home scrolling through Weibo on my computer. Wang Xu came home very late; he must have been exhausted from working overtime. He collapsed onto the bed without moving. After several attempts to push him to take a shower, he reluctantly headed to the bathroom. As soon as he entered, I picked up Wang Xu's phone and began to browse.
Today, I learned a new skill on Weibo: how to check frequently visited places using an iPhone. Jokingly, I started checking locations step by step according to Weibo's instructions, and it actually showed several places my husband often visits.
I was thrilled, feeling like a little detective as I eagerly scrolled through the records. The first entry was undoubtedly our home. The log showed over thirty entries; however, the next one wasn't just a few entries down—it was crucially... not the address of Wang Xu's company.
At this point, I felt something was off. The second entry was for a neighborhood not far from our home; I recognized it because I've been there a few times—it's my best friend's neighborhood! My heart raced as I clicked on it; the visit time was just an hour ago!
Now I was completely bewildered. I thought I shouldn't scare myself, but ignoring it wasn't an option either. I put the phone back where it belonged, my mind swirling like mush. It wasn't that I didn't trust Wang Xu; he simply didn't have many friends—just a few colleagues from work with whom he occasionally went out for drinks or dinner, but they were definitely not close.
At least not close enough to visit someone's home as if it were his own.
The more I analyzed it, the more confused I became. At that moment, Wang Xu emerged from the bathroom with his hair towel-dried. Perhaps seeing me lost in thought made him tease me: "What's wrong? Did you read some ridiculous horror stories online that scared you so much? Your face is pale! Come here and tell your husband about it."
Wang Xu took my hand and sat back down on the bed, pulling me into his embrace. He had just showered and seemed more awake, starting to tease me, but I couldn't focus on anything. My mind was swirling with the number of times the address had been accessed.
"Wang Xu," I called him softly.
"What's wrong? Are you still scared? Don't worry, I'm right here. Look at you, all tense. Stop being paranoid," he reassured me.
Yes, stop being paranoid, I murmured to myself. How could I doubt my husband over a silly test? I knew how much Wang Xu loved me; after all, I was the one who had been married to him for three years. I should trust him.
Yet, an involuntary panic gripped me—was it fear of Wang Xu cheating or a deep-seated insecurity about something? I loved Wang Xu but was also afraid of losing him, afraid that he might abandon me and no longer want to try together.
"Wang Xu, I just watched a horror movie for over an hour, and it was really scary. I kept wondering where you were during that hour."
I looked at Wang Xu hopefully, pleading silently for him not to lie. If only he would tell me the address from the phone call, then I would trust him completely from that moment on, as long as he admitted it.
"Hey, didn't I tell you? I was working overtime at the office. I just got back. Don't be scared; your husband cares about you. A hug will make it better. Just promise me you won't watch those movies again, okay?" Wang Xu said in a soft voice to comfort me.
I pushed away his outstretched hand and shifted to my side of the bed, pulling the blanket over myself and turning my back to him. "I'm tired; let's sleep."
Wang Xu must have been tired too because he didn't say anything else. I felt the bed sink slightly behind me; he must have laid down.
I slowly closed my eyes, letting my world slip into endless darkness.
