Early the next morning, Wang Xu went to work. I didn't get up until nine o'clock, quickly washed up, had breakfast, and then headed out. 0

To prepare for pregnancy, I resigned from my job as a secretary at a foreign company. After years of endless banquets and socializing, it was something I couldn't avoid. When I left, my boss even advised me that if I stayed for another year or two, I would surely get promoted. 0

I shook my head and left anyway; compared to my husband and family, a job really wasn't much. Family comes first. Wang Xu was happy about my resignation; he patted his chest and said his greatest pride was being able to support his wife. 0

So for the past six months, I haven't been working. I usually do housework and cook nutritious meals following online recipes. Unfortunately, my stomach hasn't cooperated; there has been no progress. 0

After wandering around the market for a while, I bought some vegetables and brought them home to cook. As soon as I entered the door, I noticed a red plastic bag by the entrance. I set down my things and opened it to find a bag full of longan. 0

It wasn't so bad before seeing it, but once I did, I felt hungry. After putting my groceries in the kitchen, I sat in the living room and started peeling the longan to eat. Just as I hadn't eaten many, my mother-in-law suddenly came out of my room wearing my bathrobe and pointed her finger at me, yelling. 0

"Who told you to eat that!" 0

I was startled and momentarily speechless. The longan had been on the shoe rack; I had taken it without thinking much about it. I considered that it might have been placed there by my mother-in-law, but since it was in our house, wasn’t it okay to eat? 0

"Who told you to eat that!" 0

My mother-in-law's expression twisted in anger; she let out a deep breath through her flared nostrils, her frosty gaze fixed on me. She had wrapped my yellow bath towel around her head and kept repeating her question. I felt somewhat wronged. 0

But thinking about it, she was Wang Xu's mother—my mother-in-law—and I should give way in such matters. I quickly put the unpeeled longan back into the bag and felt wronged; my first reaction was to apologize: "Mom, I didn’t think much when I took it; it's my fault. Please don’t be angry." 0

My mother-in-law quickly walked over, grabbed the plastic bag from the table, viciously pulled out a longan from inside, and smashed it on the floor with a cold snort before turning away without looking at me and heading back to my room. 0

I stood in place, watching the longan roll and hit the TV cabinet before coming to a stop. When I looked up again, my mother-in-law had already come out of my room, dressed neatly, and gave me a brief glance before walking away. 0

Another hour passed, and I still couldn't figure out what the problem was. What was wrong with eating a longan? Normally, my mother-in-law wouldn't be so displeased with me. Her actions only made me feel more confused. 0

After thinking for a moment, I decided to go back to my room. As soon as I opened the door, I was relieved to find everything fine; however, the bathroom looked like it had been flooded, damp and filled with the heavy scent of shower gel. 0

I turned on the exhaust fan and stood at the bathroom door, noticing my mother-in-law's clothes left on the sink. It seemed she had forgotten them in her rush. Was it really because I had just eaten a longan? 0

As much as it saddened me, I understood that part of her frustration stemmed from my inability to conceive. Today, it seemed to have reached a breaking point. Although the root cause lay with Wang Xu or myself, as an outsider in this family, I could see that her anger was directed partly at Wang Xu and partly at me. It wasn't something I couldn't untangle. 0

But I loved Wang Xu, and I didn't want him to be caught in the middle between me and his mother. I suppressed my feelings of frustration, sniffed a bit, and adjusted my emotions. 0

Once I felt slightly composed again, I picked up my mother-in-law's clothes to wash them. Before marriage, I firmly believed that holding grudges against my mother-in-law was foolish; there was no need to put my husband in an awkward position. 0

Coincidentally, I also had two pieces of clothing to wash, so I planned to check if there were any items left in her clothes. As my hand brushed against a pocket, I felt something hard. Pulling it out revealed a folded square piece of paper. 0

The paper felt smooth to the touch. As I casually unfolded it to take a look, little did I know that its contents would nearly ruin my life. 0
