From a distance, it was indeed a Crowded Street, with throngs of people lining both sides of the road. In the center, the Official Road was first graced by a grand procession, with the Imperial Guard clearing the way. Following them was a Bright Yellow carriage, and upon seeing it, the citizens lining the path all knelt and shouted long live the emperor.
This scene was incredibly spectacular, leaving Mei Shuang's heart in shock.
In a daze, it seemed that the curtain of the carriage was lifted by someone inside, revealing a familiar face...
After the carriage departed, Lian Sister was still clapping her hands, excitedly exclaiming, "I saw it! Just now, the emperor actually looked this way..."
Mei Shuang came back to her senses. Could it be that what she saw earlier was not an illusion? She skeptically replied, "From this far away, are you sure you can see clearly?"
Lian Sister gazed longingly at the departing Royal Guard, her face filled with happiness. "Really! The emperor is so handsome! Truly a son of heaven!"
"Handsome?!" Mei Shuang was speechless.
After descending from the flat-roofed house, Mei Shuang entered her two sons' room. The little ones were not disturbed by the commotion outside; instead, they slept soundly. Occasionally, in their dreams, they would pout their soft pink lips, which made Mei Shuang's heart soften.
At just over three months old, they had grown from four or five pounds at birth to over ten pounds now. They looked round and plump—indeed good eaters.
She sat beside the cradle, carefully observing her two children. They looked exactly alike, except for a small birthmark behind the elder's ear that resembled a pinprick. Their features were strikingly similar to their father's.
Mei Shuang gazed at her children for quite some time before standing up. As she turned around, she heard Lian Sister's alarmed voice saying, "Hey! Who are you? What do you want?!"
Mei Shuang suddenly stood up and saw through the long window that two people dressed as ordinary citizens had barged in. Lian Sister was trying to block them with her arms while urgently calling for Mei Shuang.
Suddenly, one of the intruders struck Lian Sister's neck with a swift motion like a knife, causing her to collapse unconscious.
Mei Shuang was taken aback.
She quickly pressed a button on the wall nearby; instantly, two walls parted. She bent down and carefully placed the cradle inside before pressing another switch.
Then she stepped out of the room.
Just as she reached the door, she collided head-on with one of the intruders who had come in.
Two people, dressed plainly and with fierce expressions, looked anything but kind.
Mei Shuang assessed them briefly, then raised her hand to smooth her hair and coldly said, "In broad daylight, how dare you trespass into a private residence? What crime do you think you are committing?"
The two men, upon seeing Mei Shuang, were first stunned by her beauty. Then, one on each side, they blocked her path and grinned sinisterly, "Where are the two children?"
Seeing their stance, Mei Shuang realized they were well-prepared. She struggled to calm her inner turmoil while observing the situation outside. As long as she could escape, she could call for help. Thus, she replied, "What children?"
"Haha," one of them crossed his arms and smirked, "Don't think we don't know you have two children. Our young lady can't have children of her own, so we want yours. If we need to negotiate, just name your price. If you refuse to cooperate, we'll take you along too!"
Mei Shuang trembled with anger but also understood that they had already figured out the situation. It seemed that word had leaked out at some point.
She shouted angrily, "The emperor just passed by outside, and you dare to cause trouble? Do you have no respect for the law?!"
"Hahaha! You really are amusing. You think just because you're watching the commotion outside that we wouldn't dare act? Hey, why don't you look around? Everyone on the main road is waiting to see the emperor; who has time to care about you!"
One of them grew impatient and moved to grab Mei Shuang while the other rushed inside.
"Stop!" Mei Shuang raised her sleeve with a flourish. Before they could comprehend what was happening, they collapsed to the ground.
Seeing the two men unconscious on the floor, Mei Shuang quickly ran to Lian Sister's side and pinched her acupoint. Lian Sister slowly regained consciousness and immediately asked about the children in a panic!
Mei Shuang's eyes flickered slightly as she slowly released Lian Sister's hand and asked nonchalantly, "How did you know those men came for the children?"
Lian Sister was startled and ultimately lowered her head under Mei Shuang's sharp gaze, not daring to look at her face. After a moment of hesitation, she stammered, "I... I accidentally mentioned the children’s matter and someone overheard..."
Looking up at Mei Shuang's increasingly dark expression, she panicked and knelt down, shaking her hands vigorously. "Miss, it's really not my fault! I truly didn't mean it! But... ah..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the front door was pushed open.
Five or six people burst in through the door. Seeing the two earlier intruders lying unconscious on the ground, one of them sneered coldly, "This woman is indeed not to be underestimated! Tie her up! You lot, go inside and find the children!"
Mei Shuang was in a state of panic as she demanded, "Who are you?!"
There were many people around, and Mei Shuang was quickly lifted by two hunched and muscular men. Watching them brazenly snatch children in broad daylight, Mei Shuang screamed for help, but after one shout, someone covered her mouth.
Then, after a heavy blow to the back of her neck, her vision went dark, and she fainted.
"You lot, hurry up! With the chaos outside, be quick about it and don’t keep the master waiting."
"Boss, how come there are no children inside?"
"What? Look harder! They can't have flown away!"
The group rummaged through the room for a while when suddenly one person listened closely and said, "It seems there’s a child crying behind this wall."
The leader glanced back at the unconscious Mei Shuang and immediately became furious. "This dead woman still has some fight in her. You all better find that child today, even if you have to tear this house apart. But remember, do not harm the child."
...
"Child, my child!"
Mei Shuang groggily opened her eyes to complete darkness. Just moments ago in her dream, she had watched helplessly as strangers took her two children away; she couldn't catch up to them. Startled awake, she let out a cry.
Terrified by the dream, Mei Shuang was drenched in sweat with her heart pounding.
She frantically tried to open her eyes wider, but it was still pitch black. What on earth? In broad daylight, could she really be blind?
Recalling the chaos before she lost consciousness made her heart sink. In a panic, she tried to get up but nearly fell over.
"Are you awake?"
With a clear and light voice calling out, Mei Shuang's surroundings suddenly brightened.
A young girl entered holding a candle. Upon seeing Mei Shuang awake, she turned and called out to someone outside, "Young Master, Miss is awake."
The voice sounded so familiar that Mei Shuang couldn't help but exclaim, "Xiang Cao?!"
Indeed, the newcomer was the little girl serving Yun Kong.
After placing the candles, Xiang Cao smiled at Mei Shuang and said, "You finally woke up."
Mei Shuang was taken aback, too anxious to ask why Xiang Cao was there or whether Yun Kong was also present. She hurriedly got out of bed and rushed outside, shouting, "Where is my child? I need to save my child!"
Xiang Cao stopped her, saying, "Wait, wait! Listen, the child is safe. The young master is watching over them."
In the living room, Yun Kong was standing by two cradles, where two chubby babies were eagerly trying to reach for the rattle in his hand.
Under the candlelight, Yun Kong was immersed in the joy of playing with the children, his smile warm.
Mei Shuang quietly approached and squatted down in front of the cradles. As soon as the two identical little ones saw their familiar mother, they immediately turned their attention to her and began fussing for food.
Yun Kong glanced at Mei Shuang and said, "Feed them first... they are hungry..."
Half an hour later, Mei Shuang came out.
Xiang Cao had already set the table with fragrant dishes. Yun Kong called out to Mei Shuang, "You must be hungry. Come and eat."
"Where is this? How did you all get here?" Mei Shuang asked as she sat down at the table and picked up her chopsticks.
Seeing that Yun Kong remained silent, Xiang Cao served Mei Shuang a bowl of rice and interjected, "It’s quite a coincidence today. The young master was walking on Official Road when he saw someone ahead carrying a suspicious sack. There were two people following behind with baskets, and we could vaguely hear the cries of babies. Just as they were heading towards a carriage, the skirt of a woman peeked out from the sack. The young master became alert and rescued her only to find out it was Miss. Come on, eat up..."
Yun Kong listened to Xiang Cao's explanation without saying a word, focused on his meal. Mei Shuang was skeptical about Xiang Cao's explanation; if it wasn't intentional, it truly was a coincidence. If it wasn't such a coincidence, then the consequences could be dire.
After finishing two full bowls of rice, Mei Shuang finally felt some strength returning.
She walked into the courtyard where Yun Kong was staring off into the distance.
After hesitating for a moment, she approached him and said, "I really owe you today..."
Yun Kong did not turn around but calmly said, "This is Dazhao Temple..."
"......"
Mei Shuang was startled and suddenly came to her senses. The chaotic scene from earlier in the day flashed before her eyes. Yun Kong clearly had something to imply, and she lowered her gaze, remaining silent.
After a moment of silence, Yun Kong turned to look at Mei Shuang under the moonlight. She had gained quite a bit of weight, but it did not make her lose her charm. Although she wore loose robes, she still looked enchanting.
"Do you know who kidnapped you and your child today?"
"I don't know," Mei Shuang shook her head. "It’s probably someone involved in human trafficking."
"You’re clever; I won’t deny that," Yun Kong said. "You thought your plan was flawless, but how could you trust others so easily?"
Mei Shuang understood that Yun Kong was referring to Lian Sister. She murmured, "She seemed very honest..."
Yun Kong looked at the distressed Mei Shuang, her expression turning serious as she couldn't help but scold, "Do you have any idea how dangerous today’s events were? If I had been even a moment late, both you and your child would have fallen into an irretrievable situation. They had already planned everything, just waiting for the chaos today to strike, selling the child to a wealthy family and sending you far away..."
