Nangong Nuo withdrew her gaze, glancing at Mei Shuang with a cold snort. "The Founding Ancestor is right before you; you can ask him!"
Mei Shuang was momentarily taken aback, unsure how to respond. However, recalling how Nangong Nuo had entered without bowing or kneeling before the statue of the Founding Ancestor, boldly meeting its gaze, she suddenly understood.
Nangong Nuo let out a long breath, her eyes shining with a chilling light as she spoke coldly. "The Nangong Family has been loyal to the Founding Ancestor for generations, yet to cover up the Former Emperor's mistakes and maintain the family's reputation, the Founding Ancestor ultimately tilted the scales in favor of the Former Emperor. My Nangong Family has had to swallow our pride and endure such humiliation! It is one thing to bear it, but this is beyond what can be tolerated!"
The attendants accompanying Nangong Nuo, all from the Nangong Family, were stirred by her words and passionately declared, "Prince Zhao, our Nangong Family has earned the emperor's favor through our military achievements over the past century. We never expected that this Other Clan Prince would have such a sordid background. Though the Xiao Clan has received heavenly grace, they are unworthy of their position and do not deserve to be emperor. We implore you, Prince Zhao, to raise an army after your mission is accomplished and proclaim it to the world to avenge our past disgrace!"
As soon as these words were spoken, they sparked a strong response!
Seeing this fervor, Cong Fei's anger flared up instantly. Drawing his sword, he pointed it at Nangong Nuo and shouted, "Bold traitor! You dare commit treason!"
In response to this situation, Nangong Nuo's attendants quickly surrounded Cong Fei, waiting for her command to turn him into minced meat!
The atmosphere shifted dramatically from a cooperative treasure hunt to a fierce struggle between protectors of their respective masters, tension hanging thick in the air.
Nangong Nuo was unfazed by Cong Fei's words. She instructed her people to lower their weapons and said calmly, "I have endured humiliation for many years just for the day when the Nangong Family can clear our name! There is no need to rush; let us first focus on our task!"
After hearing Nangong Nuo's words, Mei Shuang felt a complex mix of emotions. This statement was tantamount to admitting that she had harbored treasonous intentions for many years.
Recalling the earlier incident involving the Left Chancellor being turned into a puppet and its connection to matters concerning the Eastern Kingdom revealed a web of complexity. In that moment, she suddenly thought of the false Left Chancellor Li Tang's regicide treason. She wondered if Nangong Nuo was involved in that matter as well. Li Tang had once claimed that Nangong Nuo had betrayed Mei Ru; if that were true, there must be some connection between Nangong Nuo and Mei Ru. Moreover, since Mei Ru had received true teachings from Yamataikoku, it raised questions about any ties between Nangong Nuo and Anriyan... Was it merely coincidence that Nangong Nuo showed no wariness towards Anriyan upon meeting him?
Lost in these thoughts, Mei Shuang froze up and dared not ponder further. Her gaze flicked over to Anriyan, who appeared calm and aloof as if what was happening had nothing to do with him.
Mei Shuang's heart sank. Did the emperor of the Great Qin Empire not foresee any connection between Anriyan and Nangong Nuo before sending them together? If so, she found herself caught in a dangerous predicament!
In an instant, countless thoughts swirled in Mei Shuang's mind, leaving her utterly bewildered.
When Nangong Nuo finally lowered her weapons, Mei Shuang sighed in relief.
However, at that moment, it seemed as if something had changed with the statue; it appeared to have shifted from its original position.
Nangong Nuo, facing the statue directly, noticed it too; it seemed to be rotating away from where it originally stood.
Focusing intently on it, she confirmed that indeed the statue of the Founding Ancestor was turning.
Everyone held their breath, and after a while, the statue had shifted positions, revealing a large hole about a foot wide in the ground.
"Is the treasure right below us?..." someone said, and in an instant, everyone was eager to move, yet no one dared to step forward first.
Nangong Nuo's gaze shifted to Mei Shuang.
Mei Shuang was speechless; at the most dangerous moment, this person always thought of himself first.
Although she had felt a surge of sympathy for Nangong Nuo due to his background earlier, that sympathy quickly faded as he was the first to push her forward now. What he needed was not sympathy but treasure.
Mei Shuang said, "Since the Founding Ancestor has automatically activated the mechanism, it means we are welcomed to enter. So, there is no need for everyone to be afraid."
Her words left everyone half-convinced. "What do you mean by that?"
"If it were outsiders or those with ulterior motives, they likely wouldn't respectfully kneel before this statue. Now that everyone has knelt before it, the Founding Ancestor must have sensed it and thus activated the mechanism. Look at the ground where you knelt; isn't that where this mechanism is triggered?"
The crowd rejoiced, and having witnessed Mei Shuang's strength before, they naturally had no doubts. One brave soul jumped in first, and soon after, they heard his voice reporting that he was safe.
Only then did everyone feel reassured and followed him down, though for safety's sake, a few stayed above to keep watch.
Below was a naturally formed massive cavern, illuminated by torches. Each person who descended was left speechless by the sight before them.
The air underground was stagnant and carried an indescribable strange odor. Fortunately, everyone had their gear on, preventing them from fainting on the spot.
To be honest, the scene before them was so shocking that it was hard to describe with just one word.
In the vast cavern where one could ride horses, piles of gold and silver, emeralds and corals, along with various rare treasures were scattered everywhere. Looking around, everything sparkled brilliantly and dazzled the eyes; there were even some incredibly rare treasures that were hard to find in the world.
In addition to these treasures, there were about a hundred empty copper riveted red lacquer cabinets scattered in a corner, likely used to store those jewels originally.
Perhaps due to the passage of time, thick dust covered the nearby red lacquer cabinets.
Everyone was momentarily lost in thought; each felt a rush of excitement surging to their heads. Without steady resolve, it would indeed be difficult to maintain control.
Mei Shuang was stunned by everything in front of her; it turned out that these treasures truly existed!
However, after this revelation, Mei Shuang was left with a question in her heart: why were these rare and precious items not placed in cabinets but scattered on the ground? The scene before her looked as if someone had opened a cabinet and dragged the jewels out, leaving them strewn everywhere.
Nangong Nuo and Anriyan also felt a surge of vigilance at the chaotic sight.
Initially, it was said that the treasures had mysteriously disappeared during transport, but now it seemed far from simple.
If they had truly vanished, how could there be so many traps outside along with the Founding Ancestor Statue? Therefore, Founding Ancestor must have known that this batch of treasures was hidden here. However, if they were deliberately concealed, why was it claimed to be a sudden loss? The treasures before them appeared disordered and did not seem to be carefully stored; rather, it looked like someone had hastily opened them without time to tidy up.
Mei Shuang pointed out these oddities without reservation, and the others nodded in agreement.
Yet, this place was a naturally formed enclosed space without any clear structure. With the light from the torches illuminating the walls, which were rough and jagged from chiseling, there was no exit except for a hole about two yards above the ground.
Countless rare treasures lay before them; nearby, large beads resembling goose eggs emitted a shimmering glow from dark corners, dazzling to behold. A little further away, among piles of jewels, there was a pure gold scepter and a crown adorned with various gemstones; they sparkled with an unusual luster under the torchlight.
Being of royal descent, Nangong Nuo did not express admiration for the shocking scene before her nor did she feel any pride in finding the treasure; instead, she frowned.
With so much gold and silver wealth, why would Founding Ancestor allow it to remain in such disarray? Was the disappearance of the treasure protection team real or just a fabrication?
As Nangong Nuo urged everyone to remain calm and not act rashly, Mei Shuang's gaze was suddenly drawn to a scepter in the distance.
The scepter stood out among the piles of jewels. Mei Shuang approached it and noticed its peculiar design; it was made entirely of pure gold. The top featured the head of a strange beast intricately carved into it. Upon closer inspection, Mei Shuang could vaguely recognize it as a creature from ancient legends—green-faced with tusks and an unfriendly expression. Particularly striking were two large blue gemstones set into its eyes. When Mei Shuang met the gaze of those gemstones on the scepter, she suddenly felt an indescribable sensation.
She slowly crouched down to examine the scepter closely...
“Lin Yuxiang, where have you been hiding? Haven't you heard that 'when one person is alone too long they become addicted, when two people are together too long they end up in bed'? Where's your boyfriend? While you've been away, he's already been with someone else! Hahaha...” A beautiful yet twisted face laughed triumphantly at her.
“Lin Yuxiang, where are you? Answer me!” In the pouring rain, several familiar faces flickered by.
“Yuxiang, good child, where have you gone? Mommy misses you... Wuwuwu...” The heartbreaking face was streaked with tears that made one's heart ache.
Then suddenly before her flashed images of iron horses and golden spears amidst raging war; countless soldiers clashed violently against each other. The sounds of fire and bloodshed mixed with the cries of old and young women and children created a horrifying cacophony that sent chills down Mei Shuang's spine and made her heart ache...
As Nangong Nuo and Anriyan surveyed their surroundings, they suddenly noticed something unusual about Mei Shuang ahead of them.
They hurried over and saw Mei Shuang kneeling before a staff, her eyes wide and unblinking, her shoulders trembling violently, tears streaming down her face as if she were witnessing something horrifying.
"Miss Lin, what's wrong?" Anriyan asked anxiously, squatting down to shake Mei Shuang's shoulders.
Mei Shuang seemed oblivious, staring at the staff with tears flowing freely, her eyes filled with worry and fear, tangled in an indescribable confusion, as if she were in a world of her own...
Nangong Nuo also sensed that something was off about the staff. After glancing at it, he felt a chill run down his spine and swiftly used his sword to push the staff aside.
As the staff was flung away, Mei Shuang's body shook violently for a moment before she collapsed limply into Anriyan's arms, as if awakening from a deep dream.
Mei Shuang's eyes were tightly shut, her face pale as paper, her breathing shallow. Anriyan quickly asked Cong Fei to support Mei Shuang. He swiftly took out a small Porcelain Bottle from his belongings, removed the stopper, and poured a few drops onto Mei Shuang's nose and temples while pinching her philtrum.
After quite some time, Mei Shuang slowly opened her eyes.
She stared blankly for a while before realizing she was lying in Cong Fei's arms. Confused and weak, she asked, "What just happened to me?"
