Suddenly, a crisp sound came from the bushes in the distance, particularly noticeable in the silent forest. The Bear-like Creature turned its head abruptly and dashed toward the source without hesitation.
In the blink of an eye, its hefty body disappeared into the thicket.
Cong Fei put away his arrow and called for a few people to hurry down from the trees. Not daring to delay, he helped the weak-legged Mei Shuang and ran up the mountain.
Before leaving, he grabbed a handful of powder from a small pouch and vigorously waved it into the air to conceal their scent.
Mei Shuang stumbled along with the group, only hearing Cong Fei say, "Just hold on a little longer; there's a waterfall ahead, and we'll be safe there."
However, despite how close it sounded, running felt like an eternity. Mei Shuang wished she could attach wheels to her feet. After running for about twenty minutes with everyone, she still only heard the sound of water. Moreover, they were winding around, making her doubt whether they had taken a wrong turn. But everyone else looked serious, their feet never stopping. If it weren't for her, they would have probably arrived already.
Seeing Mei Shuang drenched in sweat and gasping for breath, Shijieyu asked, "Do you want to take a break?"
Mei Shuang gritted her teeth and replied, "I'm fine."
The ferocious Bear-like Creature was not something that could be easily killed even with modern firearms; ten strong hunting dogs wouldn't be enough to withstand its attack, let alone their fragile bodies.
Eventually, when they could run no more, they found an ancient tree to climb. This time, Mei Shuang learned her lesson and climbed almost to the top before collapsing there to catch her breath.
Through the branches of the tree, she saw that the sun was already faintly hidden behind the mountains. Thankfully, summer days are long; otherwise, they would have been even more lost by this time.
In the distance, Cliff revealed a wide waterfall cascading down like a white ribbon. The drop was estimated to be around a thousand meters. Below, rocks were scattered in the valley where the waterfall crashed down, creating massive splashes of water.
What they did not expect was that although Cong Fei had temporarily diverted the Bear-like Creature's attention with his arrows and had been running while scattering powder to cover their scent, they still exposed their whereabouts.
Anriyan and the others had not originally planned to climb trees, but when Cong Yue suddenly exclaimed that something was wrong, those on the ground had no time to hide and quickly leaped up into the trees.
With the sound coming from the bushes, the Bear-like Creature rushed out, letting out a roar like thunder that shook the leaves.
Several men were deeply afraid that Mei Shuang on another tree would not be able to handle the scare at a critical moment. In a panic, they feared something terrible would happen. Even with Shijieyu by her side, they were all on edge, and they could see Mei Shuang trembling on the tree.
The roar of the Bear-like Creature was enough to make one’s heart race. Mei Shuang covered her ears in terror, feeling as if her heart would leap out of her throat. She looked at Shijieyu, silently asking what to do. This creature was determined to wear them down!
Bear-like Creatures are most afraid of being provoked; the angrier they get, the stronger they become, and they won’t stop until they’ve killed whatever living thing they see.
This was also Shijieyu's first encounter with such a fierce monster. Fortunately, he had been hunting several times before entering the palace. Although his face was pale, he managed to remain calmer than Mei Shuang. Now that there was no escape, he could only force a smile and tightly grip Mei Shuang's arm.
The roar of the Bear-like Creature echoed through the forest. Cong Fei and Cong Yue knew that brute force wouldn’t work against this beast; they had to rely on their wits. Normally, they would have set a trap for it in advance, but now there was no time.
With just a few miles to go before reaching the waterfall, even if they wanted to lure it away, their speed was no match for its strength. Moreover, as soon as the Bear-like Creature figured out that they were in the trees, it could climb up at any moment. At that point, there would be no escape for them.
Before Coach Brothers could come up with a plan, the Bear-like Creature had already begun to act.
It approached the tree where Mei Shuang and Shijieyu were hiding, wrapping its massive arms around the thick ancient tree and starting to shake it.
After all, an ancient tree is not easily shaken. Soon enough, the Bear-like Creature realized this and gave up on its futile attempts to uproot it. Instead, it began to climb up the tree with its heavy body.
Mei Shuang was still praying desperately with her eyes closed for it to leave when she unexpectedly opened her eyes to see that the Bear-like Creature's bulky body had already climbed more than a meter up.
At this moment, both people in the tree were truly horrified.
Shijieyu's face turned ashen as well; Mei Shuang didn’t need to be mentioned. A scene flashed through her mind of herself being torn apart by the Bear-like Creature.
Seeing the situation from the tree, the few people knew they could no longer hide.
Kato was about to come down when Cong Fei stopped him, saying, "This beast can climb trees, but it is not as agile as a human. Once you go down, there will be no coming back." As he spoke, he had already drawn his bow and aimed.
Kato was unconvinced and replied in broken Chinese, "I can use a knife to cut it. I have killed tigers and leopards before."
Cong Fei said, "Look at how thick the layer of grease is all over its body, similar to a wild boar; knives and guns won't penetrate it."
"And you?" Kato thought to himself, if knives and guns won't work, what good is your little arrow?
"There is only one weak spot on this Bear-like Creature, but it's difficult for an average person to reach."
While speaking, three arrows were quickly fired in succession. A scream was heard; the Bear-like Creature had been hit in its left hand, left foot, and left shoulder.
The arrow in its left hand pinned its palm firmly to the tree, demonstrating the tremendous force behind it.
Mei Shuang, who had been trembling on the tree and waiting for fate, felt a slight relief upon seeing this scene; it seemed they were finally fighting back.
The attacked Bear-like Creature was furious. Despite the pain, it prepared to pull out the arrows with its right hand. Just then, three more arrows whizzed through the air, hitting their target accurately and pinning its right palm to the tree.
With its body more than a meter off the ground, the Bear-like Creature cried out in agony. After all, it was flesh and blood; with its fingers connected to its heart, it could only lie on the tree and was unable to move for a moment.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Cong Yue had already grabbed several sturdy vines. Using them for leverage, he gently swung over to the tree where Mei Shuang was lying. He quickly pulled up the incapacitated Mei Shuang and swiftly tied her to his back with vines, signaling Shijieyu to grab another vine and come over.
Suspended about ten meters in the air with a distance of several dozen meters between the two trees, Mei Shuang had never experienced such danger before. Being in mid-air made her so frightened that she closed her eyes tightly and kicked her legs wildly.
Just as the legs extended out, they collided perfectly with Shijieyu, causing the vine she was holding to suddenly loosen.
Shijieyu's body fell like a kite with a broken string.
Mei Shuang was so frightened that she closed her eyes; if she fell, Shijieyu would either die or be severely injured. Seeing the critical situation, Shijieyu desperately tried to maintain her balance.
Fortunately, the coachman Cong Yue was quick and, together with Kato, pulled the vine tightly around a tree branch.
As Shijieyu neared the ground, the vine suddenly straightened. She lightly breathed out, "That was close," and then swung toward the tree. With agile feet, she managed to land safely.
At the same time, the Bear-like Creature had already seen someone falling from the tree. Unable to contain itself, it let out a roar and actually bit through an arrow, pulling out the arrowhead and leaping down from the tree, bloodied and charging at the newly landed Shijieyu.
Mei Shuang had already been safely brought up into the tree. Seeing this horrifying scene, she exclaimed, "Danger!"
Shijieyu also sensed a foul wind rushing from behind her. Quickly shifting her body, she moved behind the tree just as the Bear-like Creature lunged forward and missed.
Enraged by its failure, the Bear-like Creature prepared to pounce again when Kato could no longer hold back. He grabbed a vine from below and swung into the air, shouting to attract the Bear-like Creature's attention.
Kato's heavy body swung in midair as he looked at the taut vine. Mei Shuang was very worried that it wouldn't hold under pressure, so she grabbed another vine at her side and threw it over.
Sure enough, it caught the Bear-like Creature's attention as it turned and charged at Kato.
Kato appeared clumsy but was surprisingly agile. As he saw the Bear-like Creature coming at him, he swung his long knife towards it.
In that fleeting moment of passing each other, his knife did not miss; it sliced a long gash on the Bear-like Creature's shoulder. The blood drawn from this wound caused immense pain to the creature, making it shudder. However, it seemed that the pain was only momentary; when it turned back around, there was no sign of injury visible at all.
Several people were taken aback.
Shijieyu had already climbed up the tree, while Kato was still hanging on the vine. Suddenly, a Bear-like Creature lunged at him, its sharp claws reaching for Kato's leg.
In a moment of urgency, several iron nails shot out, hitting the Bear-like Creature in its left eye and cheek, causing it to let out a terrible scream and stagger back.
Taking advantage of the creature's slowed speed, Kato quickly descended and hid behind the tree before climbing back up.
The Bear-like Creature became truly enraged, swinging its long arms and pounding its chest, emitting a terrifying roar that echoed through the air as it began to climb the tree again.
This time, it moved much faster.
The people in the tree suddenly changed color.
Although Kato climbed quickly, he got his pant leg caught on a branch as he ascended. In that brief moment of pause, the Bear-like Creature extended its long arm towards his calf. He hurriedly bent down to swing his machete, but the creature nimbly dodged and roared, releasing a breath that nearly knocked Kato unconscious. Dazed, he found his machete caught and could no longer muster any strength. He could only leap upward, letting the machete be snatched away and thrown aside.
The stench grew closer, suffocating him.
The tree was not flat ground; close combat was far less effective.
Cong Fei and Cong Yue instructed Shijieyu to keep an eye on Mei Shuang before leaping to another side of the trunk. A few arrows flew past, slowing down the Bear-like Creature. However, it showed no fear and was just a meter away from Anriyan's feet. The two women couldn't help but scream, "Quickly go up!"
Unexpectedly, Anriyan leaped down from the tree.
Mei Shuang thought Anriyan was scared and dropped the Vine in a panic, shouting, "Catch it quickly!"
The Bear-like Creature, seeing it couldn't catch anyone, also jumped down from the tree, as there was more space to maneuver on the ground than in the branches.
The Bear-like Creature charged at Anriyan with a foul wind, but Anriyan remained calm. With a swift flip, he leaped over the Bear-like Creature's head. The creature was caught off guard and crashed its hefty body against the ancient tree.
Those in the tree felt as if an earthquake had struck, as the trunk shook violently.
The Bear-like Creature, now humiliated, focused solely on Anriyan. In the midst of their agile movements, Anriyan toyed with the Bear-like Creature, causing it to crash into the tree multiple times.
The people in the tree were wide-eyed; it was like watching a monkey show!
Although the Bear-like Creature possessed brute strength, it wasn't lacking in wits. Realizing it couldn't handle Anriyan, it turned back and continued climbing the tree, ignoring any further actions from Anriyan.
The people in the tree grew tense again. When the Bear-like Creature reached the middle of the tree, it suddenly paused and swung its long arm to smash a nearby branch. With a loud crack, a branch as thick as a thigh was severed. As it fell, it pulled down other branches above, and Cong Fei couldn't dodge in time, falling along with them.
Wow! This creature actually knew everyone was hiding in the branches and intended to take them out from below!
