Upon seeing her daughter, the previously dazed Second Lady suddenly snapped back to reality. She hurriedly asked, "Ruer, how did you get out? There are rules in the palace..."
Mei Ru was taken aback, wiping away the tears from her cheeks and forcing a smile. "Mother, I just missed you..."
The Second Lady paused for a moment, her earlier surprise fading as her expression grew serious. "Ruer, tell me, are you hiding something from me? The palace is strict; how could you come out dressed like this? What if someone finds out?"
As she spoke urgently, she couldn't help but cough.
Mei Ru quickly patted her back, trying to suppress the sadness within her. Wiping away the tear stains, she spoke softly, "Mother, I really just wanted to see you. I've been worried about you outside. That's why I took the risk to come back and check on you. As long as you're fine, I'll go back soon."
"Don't worry, I'm fine..." The Second Lady waved her hand repeatedly, finally managing to stop coughing. She raised her head and asked, "Ruer, how have you been in the palace?"
Mei Ru nodded. "Everything is fine..."
The Second Lady looked at Mei Ru for a long while, reassured that her daughter was telling the truth. "Then I can rest easy..."
"Mother, how does Father treat you now?"
"He..." The Second Lady's gaze faltered as she forced a smile. "It's still the same. I've been recuperating these days and haven't seen him for a while..."
Mei Ru's eyelids twitched. "Father hasn't gotten into any trouble, has he?"
The Second Lady smiled bitterly. "Ever since Shuang'er and you entered the palace one after another, Snowy End Maiden has been calling the shots at home. I haven't seen them for a long time..."
Mei Ru's eyes caught sight of a maid on the ground. She walked over and kicked her gently. "Tell me, what has my father been busy with lately? Why hasn't he come to see my mother?"
The maid trembled and shook her head until Mei Ru released her from her paralysis. Then she panicked and said, "Left Chancellor hasn't returned since he entered the palace days ago; they say he's discussing important matters with the Emperor..."
A heavy feeling settled in Mei Ru's heart; Left Chancellor had indeed run into trouble.
But was the Left Chancellor implicated because of her or due to something else? The palace was currently tight-lipped, and there seemed to be no other unusual occurrences at the Left Minister's Residence.
Mei Ru felt a tangle of emotions within her. Her assassination attempt on Mei Shuang had already come to the Emperor's attention. After all, it was merely a matter of sibling rivalry. Even if she had dealings with the Eastern Kingdom, it was only to use them as a means to an end, without any deeper significance.
However, if the Left Chancellor's identity were to be exposed, it would spell disaster for her and those behind her...
Mei Ru dared not think further. Her expression shifted, and she ultimately could not escape the notice of the Second Lady.
The Second Lady urged Mei Ru to put down the dagger in her hand. "Ruer, quickly put down the knife. What kind of behavior is this for a young lady? Especially as the Empress!"
The maidservant nodded repeatedly, looking pleadingly at the Second Lady. Mei Ru pondered for a moment before stepping forward to support the Second Lady. "Mother, let’s leave."
The Second Lady was taken aback. "Where to?"
"Far away from here..." Mei Ru said decisively. "I cannot bear to see you suffer here."
"What? You’re giving up being the Empress?"
"As long as I am with you, I don’t care about being the Empress."
The Second Lady paused and suddenly slapped Mei Ru across the face. "You reckless child, what nonsense are you saying!"
Mei Ru was stunned by the blow, touching her cheek in shock. "Mother..."
The Second Lady trembled with anger. "I warned you before not to enter the palace. Shuang'er entering the palace was her fortune; you must not compete for favor with her. Now that you are in the palace, you should uphold your duties; how can you speak so recklessly?"
Mei Ru looked at the Second Lady, whose face was flushed with anger, and stubbornly replied, "Mother, if I enter the palace but cannot protect you, what use is that title of Empress to me?"
"Hmph, what a touching scene!"
As the mocking words echoed, the Second Lady's expression changed dramatically as she pushed Mei Ru aside. "Quick, hide! It's Snow Edge coming..."
Mei Ru turned her gaze toward the source of the voice, and indeed, Snow Edge, the new favorite of the Left Chancellor, had entered.
Recalling what the maid had said about Snow Edge's various offenses against her mother, a cold glint appeared in Mei Ru's bright eyes, and she boldly stepped forward.
The Second Lady hurriedly approached with a forced smile. "Snowy End Maiden, Ruer is just being thoughtless..."
Snow Edge crossed her arms and leaned against the doorframe, a mocking smile playing on her lips. "I was wondering who it could be; turns out it's the Empress! How rare! I never expected the Empress to dress like this. What are you planning to do?"
Mei Ru let out a cold laugh. "Yun Kong, you have quite the audacity. Taking charge of everything while the Left Chancellor is away, acting as if you are the head of the household. You haven't forgotten your place, have you? You're not even a concubine of the Left Chancellor and yet you dare to dream of being the mistress of the Left Minister's Residence."
Mei Ru's words were sharp and biting, yet Yun Kong showed no signs of embarrassment and continued to smile. "Is this really how Miss Ru speaks now? This tone and demeanor certainly fit the role of an Empress. But may I ask, how does it feel to be cast out of the palace by His Majesty?"
The Second Lady was left speechless, staring incredulously at Mei Ru. "Ruer, what... what is going on?"
Mei Ru coldly smiled. "Snow Edge, your sources are quite well-informed..."
Snow Edge refused to back down. "If you hadn't harmed Miss Mei Shuang, how would it have implicated the Left Chancellor?"
The Second Lady was utterly shocked and trembled as she asked, "Ruer, you actually harmed Shuang'er?"
Seeing that she could no longer hide the truth, Mei Ru spoke candidly. "Mother, haven't you had enough of Mei Shuang's antics? She committed acts that disgraced our family and was sent to the Cold Palace. Her very existence is a disaster; it's an insult to the Minister's Residence. I merely helped her fulfill her fate..."
"And what about her now?" The Second Lady asked anxiously.
"Don't worry, Mother; she's still alive and well..." Mei Ru smirked slightly, unable to hide her delight.
Well then, even if she’s lucky enough to still be alive, it probably won’t be for long. Even if Yun Kong wants to find a remedy for her poison, it will only be a temporary reprieve; the poison within her is not so easily dealt with.
Snow Edge chuckled and said to Second Lady, “Madam Qiaolian, I’m not wrong, am I? Just look at the good daughter you raised; her thoughts are as venomous as a snake’s. She dares to harm her own sister. This ‘failure to educate is the mother’s fault’ truly puts you in a position of immorality…”
Second Lady was so furious at Snow Edge’s words that she nearly spat blood, yet she opened her mouth but couldn’t speak.
Mei Ru supported the nearly fainting Second Lady with one hand while her sharp gaze scrutinized the relaxed expression of Snow Edge.
“What exactly are you?”
“What? Have you also lost your memory? Is this our first day meeting?” Snow Edge smiled, “Mei Ru, it’s just right that you returned today; I’ve been waiting for you here for quite some time… You truly are a dutiful child who wouldn’t abandon your mother to fly away, right? Also, don’t you want to know where Left Chancellor has gone?”
At Snow Edge’s words, Mei Ru immediately became alert, the dagger in her sleeve subtly revealing itself, and the killing intent in her beautiful eyes grew stronger.
“What happened to Left Chancellor?” Mei Ru demanded.
Snow Edge no longer beat around the bush; she lowered her arms and said lightly, “He’s in the palace with the emperor; he’s doing just fine. Actually, you don’t need to worry so much; he wasn’t really your father…”
This shocked even Second Lady, who looked at Snow Edge in horror and stammered, “How do you know this?”
Snow Edge smiled and said, “What is there in this house that I don’t know?”
Second Lady’s face turned red, and she pointed at Snow Edge, unable to utter a word.
Seeing her mother so furious that she was losing her senses, Mei Ru became enraged and unceremoniously threw the curved dagger from her sleeve at Snow Edge.
The dagger flew like lightning but was dodged by Snow Edge, who sidestepped. In that instant, the dagger embedded itself into the cabinet behind her, sinking in an inch, demonstrating its power.
Even Snow Edge’s expression changed slightly after witnessing this. She turned back, suppressing her previous smile, and spoke coldly, “Mei Ru, out of respect for your filial piety, I won’t fight you in front of Madam Qiaolian. However, since your heart is so malicious, don’t blame me for being impolite.”
Seeing her dagger skillfully avoided by Snow Edge, Mei Ru was taken aback. Her dagger-throwing skills were as precise as her dart-throwing skills; she never missed. Now having failed, alarms went off in her mind. This woman means trouble!
The Second Lady regained her composure upon seeing the sharp knife and immediately scolded Mei Ru, "Ruer, why are you doing this?"
"Mother, don't worry about it. These people are all bad; they want to bully us..." Mei Ru's stubbornness flared up. "Mother, tonight I will take you away, and we will never come back."
She then turned to Snow Edge and sneered, "Snow Edge, if you like the position of the Minister's Residence lady, rest assured that once we leave, you can continue to act as you please. However, right now, you aren't even considered a concubine of the Left Chancellor; how can you walk around in the Minister's Residence?"
Snow Edge's face also took on a layer of frost. Instead of feeling embarrassed by Mei Ru's words, she retorted, "Miss Ru, or rather, Empress, you are correct; I admit I am not even a concubine. But may I ask what exactly you are to the Left Chancellor? Are you bold enough to tell your mother? Perhaps you're even less than a concubine?"
Mei Ru's face instantly turned pale.
Snow Edge did not stop her sharp tongue; her intention was to psychologically crush this arrogant woman. This was her lethal weapon for today. "Although you hold the title of Empress of the Great Qin Empire, do you know why the Emperor despises you so much? Others may not know the reason, but surely you do? Do you think the rumors of 'discord between the Emperor and Empress' have no basis?"
As Snow Edge expected, Mei Ru's face changed colors between blue and red upon hearing this.
The Second Lady also sensed something was off and asked Mei Ru with uncertainty, "Ruer, what is going on?"
Mei Ru's eyes flickered unpredictably. "Are you someone sent by the Emperor?"
