Yun Kong quietly pulled the tense Mei Shuang back until they reached the small grove behind the village.
"Let her go!"
A low, cold voice came from behind them.
Mei Shuang stiffened. Damn it! She had been ambushed from behind in front of someone as skilled as Yun Kong!
But soon, she realized it was more than just an ambush. Before the person behind them finished speaking, several figures in black appeared in front of them, each wielding a gleaming curved blade, quickly surrounding them.
This is bad!
Mei Shuang trembled in fear, silently lamenting that she had just escaped a wolf's den only to fall into a tiger's lair.
Now she was caught between wolves and tigers, facing enemies on all sides; this time, she was truly doomed.
She glanced at Yun Kong beside her, surprised to find him completely unfazed.
What a guy! Even at a time like this, he remained so calm. Could he be stunned into silence?
Mei Shuang inwardly groaned. She had no connection with this monk and had foolishly trusted him in a moment of impulse. Little did she know that following Yun Kong would lead her into a more dangerous situation.
She heard faint footsteps approaching, and a clear voice laced with mockery rang out, "You really choose not to walk the path to heaven when it's available, yet you come here to seek your doom!"
Mei Shuang wasn't sure if the words were directed at her or Yun Kong. Unable to hold back her curiosity, she asked, "Who are you?"
"Let her go! Then surrender peacefully; perhaps there will still be a way out for you! Yun Kong, you'd better be sensible!"
As the person spoke, several figures in black quickly formed ranks, ready for action.
Mei Shuang suddenly understood, and her heart filled with joy. It turned out these people were after Yun Kong. She wondered if they were enemies of Yun Kong or if they were working together with the so-called Government people from before. Had they been waiting here for him to walk into their trap?
In any case, trusting that monk's words had led her to this predicament, which was a great lesson. The only thing that comforted her was that from what she heard earlier, they did not seem to want to harm her.
Lost in thought, Mei Shuang glanced at the unarmed Yun Kong beside her and then at the approaching figures in black. She thought to herself that this time he was in trouble.
The sky was beginning to show hints of dawn, and everything around them gradually became clearer. In the distance, the chaotic sounds of firefighting could still be heard.
The gleaming curved blades in the hands of the black-clad men made Mei Shuang's heart race. If a fight broke out, it would be dangerous; they wanted Yun Kong, and if she got hurt in the process, it wouldn't be worth it. She needed to warn them in advance.
In a panic, Mei Shuang waved her hands. "Wait! Wait! I declare that I have nothing to do with him! We just happened to meet by chance! Can you let me go first before you—"
Her plea caused the black-clad men to pause momentarily. It was clear that this damned monk had taken her hostage, yet she was saying they merely met by chance?!
Seeing that they did not respond, Mei Shuang took it as a sign of agreement and prepared to make her escape.
Just as she was about to move, she felt Yun Kong's sharp gaze on her. He grabbed her waist and whispered urgently, "Don't move!"
Sure enough, this damned monk wanted to use her as a hostage!
Mei Shuang shouted in frustration, "Damn it! Let go! Hey, are you all clear? I have nothing to do with him; I'm innocent! Please don't—"
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh..."
With a series of sharp whistles, Mei Shuang's words were abruptly cut off as she felt something rush past her ear. In an instant, two of the black-clad men fell to the ground.
Looking closely, she saw that each of the fallen men had a white feather arrow embedded in their chests. Mei Shuang was immediately stunned into silence.
"Be careful!"
In the moment she was stunned, Yun Kong had already rolled with her to avoid the incoming arrows. At the same time, the black-clad figures in front reacted quickly, agilely rolling on the ground to evade the arrows while swinging their blades toward the direction of the attack.
The black-clad person who had been behind Mei Shuang instantly rushed to Yun Kong and Mei Shuang's side.
Mei Shuang's first reaction was that Yun Kong's reinforcements had arrived. It seemed this was truly a case of "the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind."
Without saying a word, the black-clad figure swung his blade at Yun Kong, who nimbly sidestepped. In the next moment, Yun Kong swiftly maneuvered, using Mei Shuang as a human shield against the black-clad figure's sharp knife.
"Ah!" Mei Shuang cried out in terror, "Help! You bastard!"
The black-clad figure probably did not intend to harm Mei Shuang; he quickly redirected his knife, narrowly missing her nose. Mei Shuang could almost feel the cold breath of death from that gleaming curved blade.
As she brushed past death, Mei Shuang felt all her body hair stand on end but was utterly powerless to escape Yun Kong's grip.
Just as the black-clad figure was about to strike again, Yun Kong had already pulled Mei Shuang back quickly. The previous group of black-clad figures became entangled in a chaotic fight with another group.
Mei Shuang watched in horror, cursing Yun Kong for holding onto her tightly while being forced to retreat with him.
As the two groups of black-clad figures clashed, dust filled the small grove, leaves scattered everywhere, and the sound of clashing swords rang out. The occasional screams sent shivers down Mei Shuang's spine.
Clearly, amidst the chaos of battle, neither side paid any attention to them. Yun Kong assessed the situation carefully and decisively told Mei Shuang, "Run!"
Mei Shuang clung to a small tree for dear life and shouted angrily, "Why should I?"
"If you don't want to die here, hurry up!" Yun Kong growled in a low voice filled with impatience.
Watching the two groups of people fiercely engaged in battle ahead, Mei Shuang quickly assessed her situation. Indeed, no one was there to manage her, and Yun Kong could easily strike her down with a single blow. Thus, she had no choice but to heed Yun Kong's threat.
As they sprinted out of the small grove at full speed, Yun Kong stepped forward and knocked out the person watching the horses. He then jumped onto a horse and pulled Mei Shuang up behind him, urging the horse to gallop away from the grove.
In the distance, the sound of soldiers rushing in overwhelmed the small grove like a flood...
Inside the grove, the remaining black-clad individuals saw a large number of troops approaching and decided to retreat without further ado.
By the time the troops led by the Government arrived, the black-clad individuals had already retreated completely.
Riding on horseback in official attire, Prefect Lord Xu looked at the several corpses lying on the ground. Upon focusing on the leading black-clad figure, he was taken aback and his expression darkened as he coldly laughed, "I wondered who it was—Lord Lu, what are you doing? Are you afraid I might steal your credit for this, so you quietly took action here? I ask you, where are the people?"
Lord Lu pressed his lips tightly together, looking dejected and saying nothing. In this situation, he truly had no words to offer.
Xu Wentian sneered repeatedly, "This is a matter personally entrusted by Superior Seal. I finally tracked it down here and had set up an elaborate trap, only to find that Lord Lu startled the snake in its grass. Now look at this; we haven't found anyone and have instead lost men. I wonder how Lord Lu will explain this to Superior Seal!"
After saying this, he turned to the soldiers beside him and scolded, "What are you all standing around for? You useless fools! Hurry up and pursue them!"
For Mei Shuang, who was riding a horse for the first time in a true sense, every leap and rapid descent of the galloping steed made her feel as if her heart might be jolted out of her chest from the rushing wind.
If it weren't for Yun Kong in front of her, she would have clung tightly to his clothes, feeling that she might be flung off like a bungee jumper at any moment.
At that moment, even if she hated that damned Yun Kong to her core, she had to prioritize her safety above all else.
After crossing another forest, they arrived at a flat road, and the horse began to run faster.
Ahead was a narrow stream, and Mei Shuang noticed that there was no bridge. Yet the horse did not slow down. As they approached, Yun Kong said, "Hold on tight!"
Mei Shuang had no idea what Yun Kong did to the horse, but suddenly it leaped into the air, propelling them across the stream.
Mei Shuang had to hold onto Yun Kong tightly, feeling as if she were taking off in an airplane, and she quickly closed her eyes in fear.
When she opened her eyes again, a heavy jolt informed her that they had safely landed.
They continued along the riverbank until they were close to a small hill when Yun Kong finally stopped the horse, which was already sweating profusely, and let it graze freely.
The sky was brightening.
In the distance, the shimmering stream wound its way like a blue ribbon, and from afar, one could see dazzling reflections dancing on its surface.
The wide meadow before them was adorned with colorful wildflowers blooming freely, dotting the green expanse like a carpet. Occasionally, small birds flew overhead, leaving behind cheerful chirping sounds.
As soon as Mei Shuang dismounted, she sat down on the soft grass, gasping for breath.
After half a day of galloping, her backside felt as if it might split in two, and it took her a while to calm her racing heart. She was also parched and hungry from the frightful experience.
Seeing Yun Kong sitting across from her on the ground, seemingly lost in thought, Mei Shuang felt a surge of anger.
That damn monk! She had trusted him, yet at a critical moment he treated her like a human shield. It was her own fault for being blind; she should have realized that since he was one of Mei Ru's people, he would never let her go.
However, at this moment, she cursed him inwardly but dared not show it on her face. After all, in this desolate place, even a hundred of her would likely not be a match for this monk.
But upon further thought, if he wanted to kill himself, why would he have waited until now? Observing the situation calmly was the best strategy.
Yun Kong did not care what Mei Shuang was thinking. He looked at the sky, suddenly stood up, and said to Mei Shuang, "Wait for me a moment."
Mei Shuang watched Yun Kong walk toward the nearby riverbank and hurriedly called out to him, "Wait, I want to wash my face too."
In this desolate place, she was even more afraid that this man would leave her behind and go off on his own.
The river flowed down from the mountains, its water so clear that it was almost unbelievable. The fish swimming at the bottom seemed as if they were swimming on the surface of the river, easily catchable.
Mei Shuang scooped up a handful of water and splashed it on her face; it felt warm and very comfortable. After washing thoroughly, she immediately felt refreshed and couldn't help but take a few sips; the water was quite sweet.
Just as she finished washing, she saw Yun Kong approaching with several fish skewered on a bamboo stick.
It turned out he had gone to catch something to eat.
In front of the delicious food, Mei Shuang weakly asked, "Could you catch a couple more?"
