Shen Yichen stepped out of his family's perfume factory, which was filled with the scent of cosmetics, moving with a steady gait. His expression was calm, and a hint of contemplation flickered in his eyes as he strode purposefully toward the southern part of the city.
As he walked, a gentle breeze brushed against his clothes, and he kept his gaze straight ahead, his steps firm and rhythmic.
Passing by a brightly decorated rouge shop, he instinctively paused for a moment. The pale face of Yaxin flashed in his mind, and the sickly white hue stirred a twinge of pity within him. Without thinking, he lifted his leg and stepped into the shop.
Inside, he squinted slightly, carefully searching through the array of colorful cosmetics. Finally, his eyes landed on a vibrant peach-red blush that seemed capable of adding some vitality to Yaxin's complexion.
He delicately picked up the blush with his long fingers and then chose an intricately carved light blue case nearby. The case shimmered softly under the light.
The shopkeeper approached him with a broad smile, hurrying over to attend to him. Bowing and scraping, he meticulously wrapped the items while grinning obsequiously. "Miss Ye has been abroad; how could she possibly use these things?"
Shen Yichen's gaze remained gently fixed on the blush case. Hearing the shopkeeper's question, the corners of his mouth lifted slightly in a faint smile as he replied softly, "Every girl wants to look beautiful." His voice was deep and magnetic, carrying an undeniable certainty.
The shopkeeper nodded eagerly, repeatedly agreeing, "Indeed, indeed."
After collecting his items, Shen Yichen turned and strode to the street corner, raising his hand to hail a rickshaw. Once the driver came to a stop, he smoothly climbed aboard and clearly stated his destination. The rickshaw driver called out and began to pull away swiftly down the street.
As he sat in the rickshaw, he lowered his head slightly, focusing intently on the blush case in his hands. He couldn't help but imagine Yaxin's joyful expression upon receiving this gift; a smile spread across his face like warm sunlight on a spring day.
The rickshaw came to a slow stop in front of a quiet courtyard on the outskirts of the city. Shen Yichen calmly paid the fare and adjusted his clothing before walking toward the entrance. Just as he reached the door and had not yet raised his hand to knock, it creaked open as if it sensed his arrival.
In that instant, a lively figure clad in light blue darted toward him like a cheerful bird before he could even see her face clearly, leaping into his embrace.
At the same time, a delicate voice, as melodious as a nightingale, softly lingered by his ear: "Father, Yaxin has been waiting for you for a long time."
Shen Yichen was momentarily taken aback, but then instinctively reached out his strong arms to gently embrace her. However, when his fingers unexpectedly brushed against something soft, he felt as if he had been burned by fire and hurriedly pulled away, a hint of barely noticeable embarrassment flashing across his face.
He steadied himself by holding her shoulders and gently pushed her back a little, his eyes filled with a mix of helplessness and affection as he said, "Yaxin, you're already seventeen; you shouldn't act like a child anymore."
When Yaxin was pushed back slightly, her originally joyful and beautiful face instantly clouded over. A thin mist gathered in her sparkling eyes, and her voice trembled with grievance as she asked, "Father, do you dislike Yaxin now?"
Seeing her on the verge of tears, Shen Yichen quickly explained, "It's not that I dislike you; Father just thinks you've grown up and should have some modesty like a girl. Otherwise, how will you get married?"
His gaze revealed a clumsy awkwardness; he truly didn't know how to explain the concept of "gender differences" to her.
Suddenly, an idea struck him. He hurriedly took out an exquisite rouge box from his pocket and gently waved it in front of her, trying to divert her attention. He forced a smile and asked, "Do you like it?"
However, Yaxin's expression grew even dimmer. Tears streamed down her cheeks like beads from a broken string; she ignored the rouge box entirely and instead grabbed his sleeve tightly with a sobbing voice: "No, I don't want to get married. Father, you promised we would always be together!"
Just as the atmosphere became tense, the old servant Chang Ma's voice came like timely rain: "Miss, it's time for your medicine."
This voice instantly relieved Shen Yichen from his predicament. He patted Yaxin's shoulder with a sigh of relief and said gently, "After taking your medicine, make me a few dishes. I've really missed your braised pig trotters."
Upon hearing this, Yaxin's childlike nature resurfaced. As soon as she heard he wanted to stay, she immediately broke into a smile and nodded vigorously, looking just like a child who had received a candy reward. She exclaimed, "Yaxin has been ready for a long time! Father can't go back on his word!"
Shen Yichen smiled back and asked playfully, "When have I ever gone back on my word?"
Yaxin nodded vigorously, the mist in her eyes dissipating in an instant. Her bright gaze sparkled like stars on a summer night, illuminating her delicately featured face, so beautiful that it was hard to look directly at her.
Shen Yichen's heart jolted, as if something had struck the softest corner of his soul.
He instinctively turned his head, but the tear-streaked face that still wore a smile was imprinted in his mind, refusing to fade away. A wave of emotion surged within him, thoughts flooding back—ten years had passed, time slipping by like a shuttle.
Shen Yichen fell into a deep reverie.
