Killer has always been very cautious, carefully destroying any potential evidence after each crime. Now, they are taking the risk of installing a camera here. Are they really so confident that no one will find any clues?
At that moment, Xiao Liu suddenly exclaimed, "The elevator is moving, it's coming down!"
Everyone looked at the elevator in surprise as the numbers on the electronic screen slowly descended. When it reached the first floor, it did not stop but went straight down to the basement.
"It's here, it's really here! We can go out now."
When the elevator doors opened, they saw Zuo Yi standing inside, his right hand clutching his abdomen, bright red blood slowly seeping through his fingers. His face was pale and contorted in pain.
"You guys are really here?"
"How did you come down?" Chu Feifan hurriedly supported him.
"You all haven't gone up for so long, I was a bit worried, so I came out to check. I found that someone had left a mop at the elevator door, which blocked the elevator."
Captain Xing looked at Zuo Yi with confusion, but no one noticed this scene.
When they came up, they also brought the headless corpse with them. To confirm the identity of the deceased, they placed the body in the hospital for thawing and planned to send it back to the forensic department for Dissection the next morning.
They stayed in the Morgue for nearly three hours, and everyone was freezing. Although it was already late, Su Jin'er decided to go home to sleep; what happened last time made her too scared to stay here.
Since Zuo Yi's wound had reopened, the nurse scolded him angrily and then stitched up his wound again, warning him to be careful next time. If it tore again, she wouldn't stitch it up anymore.
Zuo Yi smiled helplessly and said after the nurse left the room, "It seems this nurse thinks of me as a disobedient child."
Su Jin'er stood up and said, "No matter how she sees you, just don't move around. But still, thank you."
At this moment, Captain Xing and the others had already placed the body and entered the room, saying, "Aren't you all going home? Come on, I'll take you back. I still have to rush back to handle some matters."
The group left the hospital together. Inside the empty hospital, there were two nurses on duty on each floor, and at this late hour, the hospital felt even quieter. The sound of their footsteps echoed hollowly in the corridor, as if each step was pressing on their hearts.
Su Jin'er increasingly disliked the smell of the hospital. The scent of disinfectant that often lingered in the air reminded her of decaying, mangled corpses, and waves of nausea surged within her. She quickened her pace to exit the hospital.
The air outside was much better.
She took a deep breath, allowing her heavy heart to slowly relax.
Chu Feifan, who had come out behind her, ran up and asked, "Why are you walking so fast?"
"I don't know; I really hate the smell of disinfectant in hospitals right now. It seems I'm better suited to being a doctor!" Su Jin'er replied with a bitter smile.
"You'll get used to it," Chu Feifan said.
Will getting used to it really help? What about death? Every day, people are dying everywhere, and hospitals are where death occurs most frequently. If one becomes accustomed to death, will they no longer feel sadness or grief over it? Is that still being human?
Humans experience joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness; but if one loses even those feelings, what is the meaning of living? It might be better to just die.
"What are you thinking about? Why so serious?" Captain Xing suddenly approached them and asked.
"I'm wondering who that Killer really is," Su Jin'er replied. By this time, they had already exited the hospital doors and were walking in the open space of the activity center.
"Don't you have any unintentional sins against someone? Or something that has been bothering you for a long time?"
There were indeed things that bothered her, but they were from her middle school days and didn't have much to do with her. Could it really be related to that incident?
Although it had been three or four years, she could never forget the angry look in that child's eyes, nor the bloodstains on his face.
That year, she was in her third year of middle school, a time when studying was particularly intense. Since the school was not far from home, she chose not to board and instead commuted with Linyuan. They would walk home after evening study sessions, which took about ten minutes.
One day, the sky was overcast, but it hadn't rained all day until the evening when it started drizzling lightly. After their evening study session, the rain still hadn't stopped; it continued to fall softly. Because of the rain, the air felt much fresher, so she and Linyuan decided to take a walk before heading back. At that time, Linyuan said that walking in the rain was a kind of romance.
However, when they reached a street corner, they heard sounds of fighting coming from an alley, along with intermittent curses mixed with muffled cries and sounds of blood.
Then they saw a face covered in blood. Although there were still footprints on it, she could tell that the face was very young—probably no older than ten. But why would such a small child be beaten like this?
She stood there in shock, watching as the little boy was being attacked. He stared back at her with eyes that should have been filled with innocence but were now filled with hatred. The attackers continued to punch and kick him while he just stared at her, biting his lip tightly in determination.
At that moment, Su Jin'er wanted to save him. But just as she stepped forward, Linyuan pulled her back. Linyuan's meaning was clear: don't get involved.
It was too dark for them to see who was attacking him, but it seemed they got tired and stopped when they noticed the two girls standing aside. Slowly, they emerged from the shadows.
Only then did they see that it was a group of Social Youths who often loitered around the school looking for smaller students to rob of their money—usually just a few bucks. The police couldn't do much; they could only lock them up for a few days before they returned to their old ways. The school had no choice but to have parents pick up their children.
"What? Do you two little girls want to meddle?" one boy with a scar on his face stepped forward and said.
"No, no! We were just passing by; we'll leave right away," Linyuan said as she tried to pull Su Jin'er away.
However, Su Jin'er did not move; the child's gaze made it impossible for her to take a step.
"Jin'er, let's go!" Linyuan urged, pulling her forcefully.
"What? You don't want to leave yet?" the boy with the scar on his face asked with a malicious grin.
"No, we're leaving right now," Linyuan insisted as she pulled Su Jin'er away.
However, they had only taken two steps when the boy spoke again: "Stop."
The two were startled and immediately halted, turning stiffly around.
"Come on! You really seem like you don't want to leave. How about we all go teach him a lesson together?"
Su Jin'er looked up at the Scarred Boy and said, "Don't go too far; this is school."
"Oh! So you think you're pretty tough, huh? Or do you want to join him in getting beaten up?"
"I'm sorry, big brother, but we're leaving right away. If you really want us to hit him, I can do that," Linyuan said as she stepped forward and kicked the boy twice quite hard. The boy didn't make a sound; he just glared fiercely at Su Jin'er.
"Could it really be him?"
"What are you talking about?" Chu Feifan asked in confusion as he took out his keys and unlocked the door.
"Ah! It's nothing, I just thought of something from my childhood. Maybe I know who the Killer is."
Hearing her words, Chu Feifan asked in surprise, "Who?"
She thought for a moment and said, "Tomorrow, let's talk about it when Captain Xing arrives. I'm still not very sure right now."
At this time, it was already two in the morning.
The two of them, feeling very tired, said nothing more and returned to their rooms to sleep.
That night, she slept heavily, dreaming throughout the night. The dreams were fragmented; at times there was just a hazy blur with nothing in it, at other times there were the hateful eyes of that child, and then there was the pitch-black night where she couldn't see her hand in front of her face, yet there was a visible headless corpse swaying somewhere.
She frowned tightly, keeping her eyes shut as she tossed and turned but couldn't wake up. Her pale forehead was covered in fine beads of sweat.
Eyes, corpses, eyes, corpses.
They tormented her nerves continuously.
Finally, she sat up suddenly.
Outside, the sky was already dimly lit. She wiped the sweat from her forehead, threw off the covers, got out of bed, and walked out of her room. The living room was quiet; Chu Feifan should still be asleep. She walked into the bathroom, turned on the faucet, and splashed water on her face to clear her mind a bit.
Looking at her bloodless face in the mirror, the angry and hateful gaze of that child resurfaced in her mind. Could it really be him?
No way, it definitely isn't.
She splashed a large amount of water on her face again, breathing heavily.
If it really was that child, she was willing to accept any punishment, no matter what it was. For these years, she had never been able to let go of this matter and had quietly inquired about the child's whereabouts. However, there had been no news at all, and eventually, she gave up. She never expected that it would resurface now.
Leaning against the sink, she slowly slid down to the floor. The cold tiles made her feel alive, still a person, and still capable of feeling.
Just as her heart had quieted down, it was suddenly startled by a ringing sound. What was originally a small noise felt particularly jarring in the stillness of the morning.
Su Jin'er was so startled that she immediately stood up, but accidentally bumped her head against the sink. Dizziness washed over her as she rubbed her head in pain and quickly ran into the bedroom.
It was Captain Xing calling; she answered immediately.
"Hello, Jin'er, we found an important clue." Captain Xing's voice on the other end sounded tired yet excited.
"Really? That's great! Can we confirm the Killer?"
"We're still testing. I need your help with something; I want you to try to collect hair from people around you."
Although Su Jin'er felt confused, she agreed.
