Captain Xing was now more certain that Zheng Kai was not lying, as a person's eyes tend to flicker when they are being dishonest, and that was not the case here. Instead, Zheng Kai's gaze was filled with fear, and his whole body trembled uncontrollably.
"Regarding whether what you said is true, we currently have no evidence to prove it. Therefore, you need to stay here for investigation over the next few days. If you are innocent, we will naturally let you go. However, if we find out that you are lying, I believe you understand what the consequences will be."
Zheng Kai's pupils dilated in an instant as he looked at Captain Xing in terror and said, "I really didn't kill anyone, so please make sure to find the real culprit and clear my name. I can't go to jail; otherwise, my Dad and Mom will be heartbroken."
As he spoke, tears streamed down Zheng Kai's face.
Captain Xing stood up, walked over to him, and patted his shoulder, saying, "If you are not the Killer, we will not make things difficult for you."
He then called his subordinates to take Zheng Kai away.
It was unexpected for things to develop so dramatically. It was clear that Zheng Kai was being framed, but the Killer's methods were not very sophisticated. From the time the body was discovered until they questioned him that night, the Killer had ample time to dispose of the bloody clothes instead of leaving them in his closet. Moreover, the place where Zheng Kai buried the bloody clothes was exactly where Wang Fan's body was found. If he had known this, he would never have buried the bloody clothes there. Additionally, Zheng Kai seemed to be a very filial child and would not likely commit murder.
He leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples. He had not rested well lately; every time he closed his eyes, he could see the faces of several deceased individuals. The images were brutal and sickening; it was shocking how ruthless the Killer could be.
Meanwhile, back at their rented house, Su Jin'er and her friends were also contemplating the entire case. The four of them sat on the sofa lost in their thoughts, unaware of what had transpired with Captain Xing.
"What do you all think?" Su Jin'er suddenly asked.
Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi shook their heads.
"Alright, stop thinking about it. Investigating cases is the job of the police; you are still students and should focus on your studies."
"No, the Killer is after me. How can I concentrate on studying when I don't even know who the next victim will be?"
"I think you should send someone to protect Hao Hongtao's classmates," Chu Feifan suddenly suggested.
"Yes, Captain Xing has already sent someone to protect us in secret," Jiang Jie said with a smile.
"I'm going to wash my face," Su Jin'er stood up and walked toward the bathroom. Her nerves were already frayed, and every moment she worried whether the Killer would suddenly send something again, like Wang Fan's arm or leg. Just thinking about it made her feel nauseous and terrified. She turned on the faucet and splashed cold water on her face, instantly waking her senses. She looked up at herself in the mirror; her pale complexion was devoid of the rosy hue it once had, looking almost vampire-like. It was said that Western vampires had extremely pale skin, with sharp teeth capable of severing a person's carotid artery in an instant, draining their blood completely. Her eyes involuntarily drifted to her neck, where her fair skin glimmered delicately.
Suddenly, she saw a pale face appear on the wall behind her through the mirror. Startled, she immediately turned around, dropping the towel from her hand, but there was nothing on the wall, just illuminated by the white fluorescent light casting a cold glow.
She took a deep breath and laughed at herself for being so timid.
Picking up the towel, she washed it clean and dried her face before stepping out of the bathroom.
Recently, her nerves had been so tense that she frequently experienced hallucinations. Suddenly, she thought of the Paper Man—the one she had seen at the very beginning—who seemed to have disappeared for quite some time. Then she recalled the Blood Jade Bracelet and thought about the person who had given it to her; he also seemed to have been absent for a long time!
"Jin'er, what's wrong?"
Chu Feifan noticed she hadn't come out for a while and came over to check. As he reached the doorway, he saw her emerging.
"Nothing, I've just been too tense lately," she said while rubbing her temples.
"Relax a bit. Since you already know that the Killer is after you, just wait and see what else he can come up with," Chu Feifan said firmly.
"The Killer is ruthless. If he were only targeting me, that would be one thing, but he keeps killing innocent people. I wish I could tear him apart," Su Jin'er said fiercely.
"You're not alone in feeling that way; we all feel the same. If..."
Before Chu Feifan could finish speaking, a sudden sound of shattering glass echoed, followed by something falling to the ground.
"What was that? It seems to have come from your room."
Jiang Jie and Zuo Yi were already inside Su Jin'er's room.
The glass in the room was shattered all over the floor, clearly broken by external force. Jiang Jie stood by the window looking outside, where there was an open space, and a white shadow disappeared around the corner of the wall.
"Over there."
Jiang Jie immediately jumped out of the window and chased after it. Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi quickly followed suit, while Su Jin'er opened the door and ran out.
Jiang Jie was the fastest, but that white shadow moved even quicker. It didn't seem to be running; it looked more like it was flying, with an odd posture.
Su Jin'er watched the White Shadow nervously, feeling a strange familiarity. The image of the white figure that had lured her into the small grove, where she discovered Wang Fan's body, flashed in her mind.
Could it be the same person?
Although that shadow was moving fast, for some reason, it suddenly stopped. Just as they were about to catch up with her, she took off running again. However, before she ran, she turned her head back. The moment Su Jin'er saw her face, she was completely stunned.
The others were no better off; they all came to a halt.
"Paper... Paper Man," Chu Feifan said with a trembling voice.
Su Jin'er was not unfamiliar with this Paper Man. The first time she saw the Paper Man was this very one. Yet, at the construction site, she had clearly picked up one of its eyes. Why had it appeared again?
Then, a scene that terrified them even more unfolded: the Paper Man was actually smiling at them, the corners of its mouth curving into a strange arc. This smile sent chills down their spines. Although they were just a few steps away from capturing it, none of them dared to take another step forward. Thus, a standoff occurred between four people and one Paper Man.
Chu Feifan suddenly took a deep breath and quickly ran towards it. However, to their astonishment, the Paper Man vanished in an instant.
After the shock wore off, the four of them rushed to the spot where it had been, but there was nothing on the ground; they could not find any trace of the Paper Man anywhere.
"Did it really disappear? How is that possible?" Zuo Yi said with a trembling voice.
"Check if there are any holes or anything on the ground."
They crouched down and searched the ground but found no holes or anything of the sort. Had the Paper Man truly vanished like that? Such a bizarre phenomenon would make anyone question reality.
After searching around without finding anything, they began to walk back in disappointment.
"Not good!" Su Jin'er suddenly ran ahead.
In her panic earlier, she had forgotten to lock the door.
When they returned, the door was closed. They cautiously entered and found nothing unusual in the living room. Then they all went into Su Jin'er's room. When the glass shattered earlier, it was clear that something had been thrown inside, and that very object was quietly lying on the floor of Su Jin'er's room.
It was a long object wrapped in cloth.
It must be Wang Fan's arm or leg!
They all speculated.
Jiang Jie cautiously walked over and slowly opened the cloth, revealing a bloody arm. Disgustingly, the skin on the arm was gone, exposing the raw flesh beneath.
Su Jin'er immediately covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom, vomiting until there was nothing left to expel. Only then did she come out with a pale face.
Jiang Jie had already wrapped the arm in cloth, but there were still small bloodstains on the floor of Su Jin'er's room, glaringly bright against the white tiles.
"Why don't you wait outside for a bit? I'll clean this up before you come back in," Chu Feifan said as he brought over a rag.
"Let me do it!" Su Jin'er reached for the rag.
"Be obedient, just go outside!"
She weakly walked out. After experiencing such things repeatedly, her nerves might have become numb! But then again, what was so bad about that? If someone wanted to be a doctor, how could they do so if they vomited every time they saw blood?
Jiang Jie sat down next to her. "I really admire you! If it were me, I might have already broken down."
She managed a weak laugh. "I'm about to break down too, but I can't. That would only make Killer even prouder."
Jiang Jie nodded. "I rarely admire anyone; you're the second."
"The first is Captain Xing, right? He really is impressive! He thinks of many things but still asks us for our opinions."
"Yes, he is indeed impressive. The reason he asks you is that he thinks you're smart and might see things he overlooks."
Su Jin'er nodded and leaned back in her chair, staring at the ceiling. This was all beyond her imagination. If only Linyuan were here, maybe she could help her remember who she had offended!
Thinking of Linyuan made her eyes moist again.
"Are you thinking about her?" Chu Feifan suddenly walked over and asked.
"Yeah, if she were here, maybe she could help me remember something!"
"Alright, stop thinking about it. It might just be some creep!"
Chu Feifan affectionately ruffled her hair.
"This feeling is really uncomfortable."
"That's exactly what he wants. The more uncomfortable you are, the happier he becomes."
"I hope this case wraps up soon! I'm really tired."
Zuo Yi stood by the window with his arms crossed, staring blankly outside.
