Su Jin'er finally sat on the small stool in the kitchen, holding her face in her hands after pouring a pot of blackened food into the trash.
"Why am I so stupid? I can't even cook rice properly." She glanced up at the wall clock; it was already 9:40. Where were Mom and Dad?
Just as she felt disheartened, the door creaked open, and she jumped up excitedly.
"Mom and Dad, you’re back?" But looking at the empty hallway, her spirits sank once more.
It wasn't her parents returning? Then why did the doorbell ring?
Her eyes fixed on the door, she imagined it would suddenly swing open, revealing a pair of pale, bloodied hands reaching in. The thought made her instinctively retreat, her breathing becoming heavy as she couldn't tear her gaze away from the entrance.
What should I do? If that thing really comes in, what will I do?
She frantically thought to herself, backing away until her back pressed against the wall. Only then did she feel a bit safer. She reached for something nearby as a form of protection and brought it to her eyes—only to find it was an arm, devoid of skin and entirely skeletal. She screamed and threw it away in panic. Upon closer inspection, she realized it was just the clothes pole her mother used for hanging laundry. She let out a heavy sigh, scolding herself for being so timid. Picking up the pole again, she hugged it tightly to her chest while keeping her eyes glued to the front door.
However, the door did not open, nor did any pale, bloodied hands appear. Still, she couldn't relax at all and kept praying for Mom and Dad to return quickly.
Her body trembled continuously; anxiety tightened every bone in her body, causing unbearable pain. Yet she dared not move an inch, even with all the lights in the house turned on.
It was already 10:30, and her parents still hadn't come back.
At that moment, footsteps echoed outside along with indistinct voices.
Could it be Mom and Dad returning?
She wanted to stand up, but after maintaining one position for so long, her body had stiffened and wouldn't cooperate. Even a slight movement made it feel like countless ants were crawling all over her. She could only furrow her brows tightly and wait for whoever was outside to open the door.
"Eh! Why is the light on? Could there be a thief?"
It was Mom, she thought with surprise.
"That can't be! A thief wouldn't dare turn on the lights! It must be our daughter who has come back."
It was Dad!
"Jin'er, why are you sitting on the floor?" Dad Su quickly dropped the bag he was holding and rushed over.
When Su Jin'er saw her dad, tears instantly fell from her eyes.
"Oh dear! Why are you crying? You should have told us you were coming back. How long have you been home?"
Mom also dropped her bag and hurried over, asking with concern.
"Mom and Dad, I missed you so much."
"Silly child, why are you sitting on the floor?"
Dad Su picked her up and placed her on the sofa.
"I... I couldn't let you worry," she said. "I came back and saw you weren't home, so I sat there waiting for you to return, but I accidentally fell asleep."
After saying that, she stuck out her tongue, realizing how ridiculous her excuse was—she probably didn't even believe it herself!
"Silly child, if you're tired, just go to bed! Why sit on the floor?"
Parents always unconditionally believe in their children, even though sometimes they know the child is lying; they still choose to trust them.
“Mom, I’m so hungry.”
“I’ll go make you some food right now.”
Su Jin'er nodded obediently. Although she knew her mother was tired after a long day at work, she couldn’t cook herself and had no choice. So she decided that during this week at home, she would learn how to cook properly.
The family enjoyed the meal together, and Su Jin'er felt it had been a long time since they had eaten together. She noticed that her dad had a few gray hairs at his temples. Although not very obvious, as his daughter, she still noticed.
Afterward, Su Jin'er urged her parents to go back to their room to rest while she cleaned up the dining table. Even though her mother insisted on helping, Su Jin'er managed to send her back to the room.
She hummed a song as she cleaned the table and then took the dishes to the kitchen to wash them slowly. With her parents at home, she felt much more at ease; at least she didn’t feel scared anymore.
By the time everything was done, it was already past midnight. She lay down on her bed, feeling exhausted but unable to sleep; she really shouldn’t have napped too much in the afternoon!
Staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open, she thought of Chu Feifan. She wondered if he had fallen asleep yet.
Picking up her phone, she noticed several missed calls from both Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi. The thought of Chu Feifan possibly being worried because she hadn’t answered made her feel unexpectedly happy; it turned out that she did care about him after all.
There were also text messages!
She opened the messages one by one; they were all from Chu Feifan, asking her to reply as soon as she saw his texts, saying he would wait for her no matter how late it was.
It was already past midnight. Was he still waiting?
She felt conflicted about whether or not to reply. If he was asleep, sending him a message would disturb his rest. But if he wasn’t asleep and she sent him a message, would he wait until dawn?
People in love often find themselves in this situation; they miss each other deeply but end up overthinking everything, and ultimately part ways due to a small misunderstanding.
Forget it, I might as well send it!
She picked up her phone and began typing a message: Are you asleep?
Just three words, very ordinary, but someone who cares would understand the meaning behind them.
Soon, the notification sound chimed.
Not yet. Why didn’t you answer the call or reply to the message?
After I got back, I felt really tired, so I went to sleep and ended up sleeping until evening. I just had dinner and saw your message. Sorry for making you worry!
It's fine, as long as you're okay. It's already late; you should get some rest! Spend some quality time with your parents at home.
She closed her phone and sighed in relief, closing her eyes.
She didn’t dare turn off the light; she was afraid that once it was dark, she would fall back into fear.
However, no matter what she did, she couldn’t fall asleep. Although her eyes were heavy with sleep, her mind felt completely alert and clear.
Oh right, it seems like there’s still an unread message!
Thinking of this, she picked up her phone again. Since she couldn’t sleep anyway, she might as well play around a bit longer!
She opened her phone and indeed found another unread message.
The moment she saw the content of the text message, she felt a wave of terror wash over her, as the message read: "Take a good rest at home! Death Game won't end so soon, as it has just begun."
This message plunged Su Jin'er back into a nightmare. The excitement of returning home quickly faded, replaced by an overwhelming fear. She felt like a harbinger of doom, believing that wherever she went, that perverse killer would follow her. Therefore, she couldn't stay at home; otherwise, she would bring disaster upon her parents.
She closed her eyes and tried hard to recall if she had offended anyone in the past, wondering why someone would target her like this. However, after thinking for a long time, she still couldn't come up with anything.
Staring wide-eyed at the ceiling, the moon outside was bright, but the lights inside were even brighter. Yet this brightness did not provide her with any warmth; her body felt as if it were submerged in ice water, cold to the bone.
Suddenly, a knock on the door startled her, and her anxious heart nearly leaped out of her mouth.
"Jin'er, are you asleep?"
She let out a sigh of relief; it was just her mother.
"Not yet! Mom."
She got out of bed and opened the door. Her mother stood at the doorway in her pajamas, smiling.
"Why are you still awake?"
"Your dad saw that your light was still on, so he asked me to come check on you. Is there something on your mind since you came back this time?"
Su Jin'er smiled and replied, "No! I just suddenly missed you and Dad a lot, so I wanted to come back and see you. I'll be leaving in two days."
"Are you not staying a few more days?"
"Well, the school is about to have exams, so I need to go back."
"Okay, study hard. If you encounter anything unhappy, remember to tell Mom. Dad and I will always support you."
"Okay!"
Su Jin'er leaned into her mother's embrace; at that moment, she felt truly happy.
The next day, since Mom had to go to work, Su Jin'er stayed home alone to study. She picked up her mother's cookbook and began learning how to cook. After a busy morning, she managed to learn several dishes. At noon, she happily sat at the dining table waiting for Mom to come home from work to eat the meal she had prepared for the first time.
However, at noon, only Mom returned. She said Dad was in the middle of a major surgery and couldn't come home for lunch, so they should eat first.
"Did you make this?" Mom asked happily as she looked at the spread on the table.
"Who else is here at home?" Su Jin'er proudly replied.
"Wow! My daughter can cook now; that's impressive! Let me have a taste."
As Mom spoke, she picked up a piece of Mapo Tofu and put it in her mouth.
"Mm, it's delicious! No wonder you're my daughter."
"Mom, I'm planning to go back to school in the afternoon. Please let Dad know when he comes back."
"Weren't you supposed to stay a few days? Why are you leaving so soon?"
"Although your daughter is smart and beautiful, if she doesn't read and study, she won't be able to pass the exams."
After dinner, Mother went to work, and Su Jin'er tidied up everything at home before preparing to leave. In fact, she had no intention of returning to school, as there were more people there, making her even more afraid to go back.
So where would she go?
Back to her grandmother's house?
Yesterday during dinner, Father had already told her that Grandma was fine, so she felt relieved. However, she didn't dare to go to her grandmother's place; after all, she was now an ill-fated person.
Then where should she go?
The world is so big; could there really be no place for her? Had she really fallen so low that a stranger could drive her to such a state?
A bitter taste surged in her throat as tears streamed down her face.
