Su Jin'er felt an uncomfortable emptiness in her stomach, yet she had no desire to eat.
Death does not bring an end to everything; it merely shifts the horror onto those around.
This was what she had been told: rather than being sad and upset, it would be better to accept his challenge directly. Since he could send her a text, it meant he was human and not a ghost. If he were a ghost, she might be helpless, but a human was different; no matter how meticulously planned, there would always be flaws.
Su Jin'er was not someone who would easily give up. Since he did not want her dead and only wanted to play with her, why not continue playing along?
She turned over and sat up, startling Cheng Xiaoying.
"You!!" Cheng Xiaoying managed to utter just one word before losing her courage.
"Ah, I apologize for earlier. Please don't mind it; just consider it a moment of madness on my part," Su Jin'er said with a smile at Cheng Xiaoying.
"Then you don't hate me anymore?"
Su Jin'er nodded.
"That's great! You should eat something first! Although I don't know what you've been through, I imagine it must have been terrifying."
Su Jin'er's smile instantly froze on her face, but soon she replied with another smile, "It was indeed terrifying, but at least I can be sure that it was done by humans."
"Done by humans? Did you think it wasn't before?" Cheng Xiaoying asked curiously, blinking her big eyes.
"Ah!" Su Jin'er laughed awkwardly and said, "No, it's just that the previous events were too bizarre."
Su Jin'er shrugged and glanced at the food on the table, which had already gone cold. She didn't want to eat now and decided to wait for dinner later.
Cheng Xiaoying leaned against the headboard, placing her hands behind her head and said, "Actually, I really admire you! You're beautiful, smart, and have such grace. You possess almost all the virtues that make others both envious and jealous. If only I could have any one of your qualities."
Su Jin'er furrowed her brows. She was not wrong; she possessed all those advantages, which every girl dreams of. However, everything has two sides. With these advantages, one inevitably loses other important things, such as friendship. Aside from Linyuan, that silly girl who took pride in being her friend, other girls were unwilling to be around her because she was simply too beautiful. Any girl walking beside her could only serve as a backdrop, unable to become the center of attention in others' eyes. This would lead to her having no friends; even boys dared not approach her. Even if they liked her, it could only be a secret admiration.
Who would know how painful it is to have no friends? Who could understand the feeling of being envied by women wherever she went?
She smiled bitterly.
Cheng Xiaoying stared at the ceiling, a look of longing on her face, but there was a hint of tears in the corners of her eyes.
"Do you know? I have thought countless times about giving up on Hao Hongtao because my rival is Qin Yu. Although she is not as beautiful or smart as you, she is still a captivating beauty. But every time I have such thoughts, my heart aches so much, as if a knife is stabbing inside me. That feeling makes me wish for death." Finally, a tear slipped from the corner of her eye and fell onto the bedspread.
Su Jin'er felt a bit sad; it was hard for anyone to accept that a boy she had liked for years had suddenly died.
"When I found out he died! When he died, I even thought about committing suicide, but I didn't even have the courage to do that. Am I very weak?"
Su Jin'er didn't know how to respond because just last night, she had also thought about death. However, when she considered taking her own life, an overwhelming sense of reluctance surged within her—a sadness that was hard to express.
Yet she still said, "Fear of death is human instinct. Just like when we encounter danger, our brains instinctively command our bodies to flee; this is not weakness."
Cheng Xiaoying did not show any happiness from Su Jin'er's explanation; she continued to gaze quietly at the ceiling with a slight smile.
For a moment, Su Jin'er suddenly found her smile strange. However, when she looked closely again, she realized that Cheng Xiaoying was still the same girl with tears on her face.
She secretly sighed. What was wrong with her? Was she being overly suspicious?
Then she also lifted her head to look at the ceiling, wondering how Chu Feifan's injury was doing. Such a deep wound should take a long time to heal! But what had caused his injury?
Who was that White-Clad Woman standing behind the tree?
The door opened, and the nurse stood at the entrance with a tray of food, smiling at the two of them before closing the door and saying, "Oh! You didn't eat lunch? Then you can have dinner! I'll just take it out later."
While speaking, the nurse kept looking at Su Jin'er, seemingly trying to read something from her face.
Su Jin'er felt uncomfortable under her gaze but continued to stare blankly at the ceiling, not moving at all.
"Your facial marks have disappeared; you really are a beauty! Look at that skin, so tender and smooth, it's truly captivating," the nurse said, reaching out to touch her face. Su Jin'er instinctively recoiled.
The nurse withdrew her hand and said, "I knew you were just pretending to be crazy; you aren't sick at all, right?"
Saying this, the nurse sat down on a nearby chair, showing no intention of leaving.
Su Jin'er smiled. Since she had already seen through her act, there was no need to keep pretending.
"Although I don't know why you're pretending, I'm still glad to meet you," the nurse said, extending her hand.
Su Jin'er turned to look at her. She had never really examined this nurse before; she was an average-looking girl with an oval face, slender eyebrows, and not very big but pretty eyes. Her nose and mouth were a bit large, which detracted from her overall beauty.
Su Jin'er shook her hand, feeling its warmth.
"I hope you won't tell anyone about this," Su Jin'er said with a smile.
The nurse nodded with a smile and then gave a meaningful glance at Cheng Xiaoying before walking out.
After the nurse left, Su Jin'er suddenly felt it was strange how she had figured it out. Although her acting skills weren't that great, it shouldn't have been so easy to see through her!
Could it be that she was discovered last night?
Su Jin'er turned her gaze to Cheng Xiaoying. "Did she come after we left last night?"
"No, it was very quiet yesterday!"
Quiet?
That can't be right!
Every night there are patients making a fuss and refusing to sleep. It couldn't possibly be quiet. Just like the uncle next door, who has to sing loudly a few songs every night before he will go to sleep, claiming that if anyone dares to stop him, he will hit them.
Although she was skeptical of Cheng Xiaoying's words, it was just her guess. Perhaps what she meant by quiet was that the nurses didn't come by.
The two of them ate in silence. Perhaps in this mental hospital, they were the only ones who were quiet!
At the Affiliated Hospital of the Medical School.
Chu Feifan was still in a coma, while Zuo Yi lay on the bed next to him, sleeping.
Chu Feifan's tightly closed eyes moved slightly, then slowly opened.
"Jin'er! Jin'er!"
He whispered her name as if still dreaming.
Zuo Yi wasn't in deep sleep; upon hearing the voice, he immediately woke up.
"Feifan, are you awake?"
Chu Feifan's eyes were still slightly closed, showing no signs of fully waking up.
"Feifan, wake up, it's okay now, it's all over."
"Jin'er, get away, it's coming!" Chu Feifan suddenly sat up, his forehead colliding with Zuo Yi's face.
Zuo Yi rubbed his face in pain and said, "Didn't I say it's all fine now? Why are you so nervous?"
Seeing Zuo Yi's pained expression, Chu Feifan looked around in confusion. "Where is this? Where's Jin'er?"
"This is the hospital. She went back to the psychiatric hospital," Zuo Yi replied irritably.
Chu Feifan let out a sigh of relief and said, "I only remember that Ghost Head rushed towards us quickly, and then I don't remember anything else."
He raised his hand but felt a sharp pain from the wound on his back, grimacing in pain.
"Alright, don't move. The wound on your back is quite deep!"
"Wound? Right, that Ghost Head grabbed me. But it only has a head; how could it possibly grab me? That's strange."
"Yeah, you're right. That's something Jin'er and I didn't consider either."
Chu Feifan furrowed his brows, trying hard to recall everything that happened last night. "I remember when that Ghost Head charged at us, it was laughing the whole time. The sound was very piercing, but it seemed like there was another voice mixed in. Did you notice?"
"Another voice?" Zuo Yi thought for a moment and said, "No, that laughter was too piercing; I felt like my head was about to explode."
Chu Feifan didn't respond; he was still thinking about that strange voice. It sounded familiar, something he should be able to recall, but what could it be?
He now felt as if he had suddenly heard a very familiar song, but just when he was about to say the name of the song, he realized he couldn't remember it.
This feeling was the most painful.
"Alright, you still need to rest. If you can't remember, don't force it. We'll talk about it once you're better."
Chu Feifan did not stop thinking; he felt that his discovery was crucial to the case, so he had to recall it.
"That! Something else happened last night," Zuo Yi said after much contemplation, deciding to tell him.
"What happened?"
"Well, last night, someone texted Jin'er telling her not to commit suicide."
Chu Feifan looked at him in confusion. "Jin'er wanted to commit suicide?"
Zuo Yi recounted Su Jin'er's suspicions from last night and the strange text message to Chu Feifan.
Chu Feifan pondered and said, "So this is all man-made. But how did he do it? And what reason could make him hate Jin'er so much?"
